  • Showing an update on my Fusion White Calathea that bounced back from humidity stress and a spider mite infestation last winter, along with how I keep its humidity levels up now and what kind of light it gets day-to-day. Also showing off my new Calathea Musaica that didn't fare well through shipping.

    I’ve watched this video a handful of times since I’ve got my first white fusion back in Feb and unfortunately I couldn’t save it. I think by the time I got to giving it humidity it was just at a point of no return and it died.
    Now you’d think that would stop me from buying another white fusion, but it didn’t and I bought one a month ago, and left a humidifier beside it, and not only is it alive but THRIVING! Like new leaves and FLOWERS! I didn’t even know Calatheas put out flowers, but it does and mine has 2 right now!
    I don’t post often but to those thinking about giving it a go a 2nd time around after an awful first experience.. go for it! Sometimes it’s not you, it’s the plant.
    Here’s what’s working for me: Humidifier (similar to the video), well draining soil (used African violet soil and added lots of pumice), watering as required (when the top 2 inches of soil is dry) and a plastic pot with lots of drainage holes.
    Here’s hoping I didn’t jinx it and I’ll have this one for years to come. Thanks for all the tips!!

    Hi, thanks for sharing your experiences : ) I found that using zip lock bags to put stressed /damaged Calatheas in helps them come back from the brink. I received several bare rooted Calatheas in the mail and put them into large plastic zip lock bags along with a mist of water to help them rehab and recover. Also have used large plastic bins like a huge Terrarium, and placed sick plants along with a small glass of water then put the bins lid on and left the plants like a little ICU. This gives humidity and limits drafts, creates a micro climate without interfering with the house holds climate and also reduces potential insect infestations coming in to attack a vulnerable plant etc. I was so dissapointed to find my shipment of quite expensive Caltheas came to me in such bad shape, so have looked at ways to help them survive. All but one have turned the corner and the definite key ingrediant is HUMIDITY : ) BTW i dont have a humidifier in the veranda room the plants are in, just pebble trays, many plants and glass surroundings facing East. I also have large bowls of water on the floor and the only thing i have given them is TLC and weak strength liquid seasol. Wishing you and your little beauties all the best, and WELL DONE for not giving up on them : )

    I just started watching your videos and others to try to save my new pinstripe calathea. It’s very small, only 6 leaves. Two curling bad. I repotted it into a clay pot and used soil mix I made of pumice, worm castings and miracle grow houseplant potting mix. This is the 3rd time I’ve repotted it, trying to get the drainage good. I moved it and my Marantas to my west window for more light. Using a shear curtain to block direct sun. It seemed to start to uncurl but today they are curling in again. Maybe too much light so I pulled back a bit from window. Humidity is between 60 and 70% I don’t know what else to try. Maybe just let it rest?

    Hey Addy, I wouldn't worry too too too much about the Musaica (Network). I got one in the mail from NSE Tropicals a few months ago and just re-potted it now. The medium that it was in wasn't what I would imagine other calatheas would tolerate. I was a bit surprised. IMHO this calathea is a tad more resilient than other cultivars. It can handly dry spells a bit better than my orbifolia. It seems slow to grow at first but once it's established it takes off steadily. The Musaica's root ball was tougher than my other calathea's. These guys appear to grow strong tuberous roots systems, kinda like spider plants. I keep mine next to a humidifier with plenty indirect light. Yours looks like it will pull through just fine.

      Yeah, it's definitely an outlier IMO. If you touch the leaves they feel thicker and more durable than many other Calatheas/Prayer Plants. Another difference is that they seem light hungry when compared to other cultivars. Like my Orbifolia leaves will begin to develop translucent spots when lighting is too strong. Yet under the same lighting conditions the Musaica will get leggy. Plants, especially Calatheas, are mysterious things! :)

      When I got my musaica it died back almost completely quite quickly. Turned out my cat munched on it a lot, that combined with my inexperience with Calatheas was enough to do it on. I cut it back to just a few new leaves, and took approriate measures, and a year later it is my healthiest plant. Apart from some crucial requirements like not letting it get eaten and water it more than once every two weeks.., the musaica is my most resilient Calathea. My two Maui queens were devoured by spider mites, they also did a good number on my warscewizii, and tried to do in my ornata, but didn't even touch the musaica. Next to that, it hardly gets curling or brown leaves, even with me letting the soil dry out almost completely between waterings.

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před 4 lety

      Thankfully I didn't notice an increase in mold within my house. However, the humidifier itself was growing mold inside of it within hours. I ended up replacing the humidifier with a new one, same model, and I haven't had a problem since (I do empty them out at least once a day to let them dry out between weekly cleanings). Looking back, I think it may have been a defective humidifier. However, for mold in the home--one of the things I do to try to mitigate any negative mold growth is to keep my humidity between 50-60% humidity, no higher. So far, it has been working.

    I wondered what the reason was for using distilled water in the humidifiers and diffusers? I have been using regular tap water. None of my manuals say to use any certain type of water....
    Do you do this for the health of the plants? I go through a lot of water in my machines. Distilled would be expensive. I just wondered what you knew that maybe I didn't?

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před 4 lety +1

      Here is an explanation from the Mayo Clinic: "Use distilled or demineralized water. Tap water contains minerals that can create deposits inside your humidifier that promote bacterial growth. When released into the air, these minerals often appear as white dust on your furniture. It's also possible for you to breathe in some minerals that are dispersed into the air. Distilled or demineralized water has a much lower mineral content than does tap water. In addition, use demineralization cartridges or filters if recommended by the manufacturer.
      " There is a bit more at this link: www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/common-cold/in-depth/humidifiers/art-20048021.

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi, Richard! After thinking about this for a while, I don't know if there's a specific benefit other than terracotta is really good at pulling moisture out of the soil. If you tend to water a bit heavily, this can really help keep plants from developing things like root rot. For me, I do better with the glazed pots because they don't pull that moisture out of the soil and so my calatheas need to be watered less, which works really well for me (less distilled water to make). For plants that are sensitive to drying out and need a lot of humidity, I've personally struggled more when using terracotta as I am less able to predict/control moisture levels in the pot.

It was getting a little bit crispy so that is why I mist it... turned out these little devils started a feast 😡
    Anyway I washed each leaves with horticultural soap and blasted it with water in the bathroom and then sprayed a mix of: neem oil, horticultural soap, alcohol, water and a bit of rosemary essential oil. I hope I caught it on time ... the plant is in quarantine in the bathroom but there is no window so I am a bit scared it won’t make it... I leave it here and then I’ll try to move it to a room that does not have too many plants.
    I wanted to have your advice. Should I cut most of the leaves or should I keep them to make sure it can process the light? Did you change your soil?

      Thank you! Yes, I have had two. This is my second one that I got last September. I had one years ago that didn't recover from a spider mite infection, which looked really different and more like fusion white and maui queen rhizomes stuck together in the same pot. I did repot this fusion white in the spring but with the same soil makeup and only cut the leaves back once it had gained a good amount of healthy new growth. I don't usually recommend cutting back leaves unless the leaves are completely dried up or have been replaced with healthy growth, sort of a one to one ratio. Once summer rolled around, it start to pop out new growth consistently and sped up a bit after I topdressed it with worm castings. Good luck with your fusion white, let me know how it goes! :)
