Larry Russell hold posthumous record for the longest period between his death and an Oscar win - he died 19 years before this ceremony. Raymond Rasch died in 1964

Nino Rota was nominated for The Godfather in 1972, but the nomination was rescinded after it was discovered that Rota reused music from the 1958 film Fortunella. The Academy's entire music branch revoted for a fifth nominee. They could renominate Rota for The Godfather or select one of the five other shortlisted scores: Ben by Walter Scharf, Fellini's Roma by Rota, The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean by Maurice Jarre, The Other by Jerry Goldsmith, or Sleuth by John Addison. Sleuth received the most votes and became the fifth nominee.

    1. RIP Burt Reynolds. A great and talented and entertaining and successful actor and star, a great guy.
    2. Charles Chaplin = A Legend, A Genius, Extremely Talented. On of a Kind

Chaplin's score for his film Limelight was brilliant; I assume that it wasn't submitted for Academy consideration until 1973 due to the American re-release of the film, along with Chaplin's other classics after his triumphant return to the U.S. in 1972.

The film I was thinking of was "Shamus", that's the one in which Burt and Dyan co-starred (and it has just been released in early 1973).

If you want to know why the Oscar nominations and awards are a joke just watch this. The famous Godfather theme was not even nominated. Not a single one from the others is known by anybody today. What a farce.

    • @denissweet6639

I'm just gonna copy and paste from someone else in this comment section because you seem to have missed it: "It was originally nominated; however, the Academy discovered some music was reused from the 50s movie Fortunella, so they deemed it ineligible." It needed to be an ORIGINAL score. But it all worked out in the end, seeing as how Nino Rota won two years later for Godfather Part 2. Also, I wouldn't say Charlie Chaplin winning an Oscar is an example of the Oscars being a joke. There are much better examples.

don't be a dullard, music from Limelight and Caberet both are known to millions.
If Godfather wanted to be nominated, they shoulda followed the rules.
... and if they _had been_ nominated, Limelight and Caberet still woulda won.
