    I'm not sure if it is important, but many here are saying that Maureen's recording didn't exist at the time of the 1973 Academy Awards. A few are saying her single was released in May, 1973. The film was released in December of 1972. The singer has talked about this in interviews over the years. She says when they gave her the song to record, the expectation was that the movie would be a hit and her recording should do well. She has said it was the first time she was ever in a recording studio. Her original single has a 1972 copyright. She says the song went nowhere, and the record company dropped it. They did proceed with completing her debut album. After the song won the Academy Award, people began calling to request it on their local radio stations (that's how it worked back then). As interest began to increase, 20th Century re-released the single, and changed the title of the debut album to "The Morning After." The single climbed the Billboard Charts, and in August of 1973 it reached the number one position and held it for two weeks.
    At the time of the Oscar broadcast, it seems very unlikely that the show's celebrities had ever heard of Maureen McGovern, who at that time was essentially an unknown singer from Youngstown, Ohio. They certainly hadn't heard of Renee Armand, since her name wasn't in the film credits, and didn't surface for many years after the movie's original release. It may be that Armand's performance didn't receive any recognition until the advent of the Internet. Armand's original recording heard in the movie was finally released on the limited edition CD of the movie's soundtrack in 2010, thirty-eight years late. Armand mentioned in her own comments a while back that the performance heard in the movie is her original demo-recording. There was never a proper recording session to prepare her version for the soundtrack.

    Sadly and unbelievably to me, the performer of the song, the illustrious MAUREEN McGOVERN, who made the 1972 song a "hit" and Oscar Winner .....was not even mentioned at the awards show. If the haunting and meaningful lyrics weren't captured by the alluring voice of Ms. McGovern, perhaps "The Morning After" may never have taken flight the way it did. Kudos to Maureen ....shame on the songwriters Joel Hirschhorn and Al Kasha for their major faux pas. The gold record of this song, along with the gold album that followed, hung proudly in her family's dinning room for many years. They were shinning beautifully and a pleasant sight to see. Also beautiful was seeing her Mother and Father - and Sister, beaming with pride for their daughter's first major achievement in the music industry -- with just her first recording. I was then, as I still am now ....overjoyed for her. ~~ PS: Happy 66th Birthday to Maureen McGovern - July 27th, 2015!

    Mal ehrlich.Kurz nach dem die beiden aufstehen, fallen mir 2 Personen auf.
    Vorne Links wenn man bei ca.2:26 das Video anhält, sieht man da doch Roger Moore,und direkt dahinter wenn ich mich nicht täusche, ist das doch Shelly Winters.Die hat ja auch in dem Poseidon Film mitgemacht.

    Astounding that neither of these schmucks thanked Maureen McGovern. It was her performance as much as anything else that made the song a hit - and the Academy loves a hit.

      @mxmxpr Před 5 lety +4

      You call these two great songwriters 'schmucks'??? Read the other comments. McGovern didn't sing the song in the film and didn't make the recording until after it got the Oscar nomination. It was released two whole months after the ceremony. When it did become a hit, most people did not associate it with the film for which it was written.

      @misterlyle. Před 4 lety

      @@mxmxpr Not exactly. As McGovern often commented in past interviews, it was the Academy Award that triggered interest in her recording. Her record wasn't made after the movie; it had actually been produced earlier in 1972. It didn't start climbing the charts until after the song won the Oscar. The Billboard site indicates that at its second week at the top in August, 1973, it had been eight weeks on the chart.

      @@misterlyle. All the more reason why "BEN" should have won. The musical score was released at the time of the movie. The singer who actually recorded the song also performed it at the Oscars. No dubbed over voices or delays that has brought about all this bantering. Everyone still remembers to this day, the song and the movie because of Michael Jackson.

      En verdad, Maureen McGovern puso su interés en la cancion DESPUES de que el tema ganara el Oscar. Ya despues de ese momento, ella lo grabó y se convirtio en un exito. Asi que en verdad, no tenian que hacerlo en ese tal momento. Pero si, la canción es una maravilla.
