Abandoned Bridge in the Florida Keys! : Exploring Bahia Honda State Park

- I visited Bahia Honda State Park in the Florida Keys. This state park is located on Bahia Honda Key, not too far from the western end of the Seven Mile Bridge. The state park features numerous beaches, hiking trails, snorkeling areas, campgrounds and RV parking. Henry Flagler's East Coast Railroad used to go through the present day parkland to Key West but was destroyed by the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. A portion of the bridge can still be walked on from the State Park, and is a really unique experience.

Wow amazingly beautiful! Oh sentimental me! I got a lump in my throat and teary-eyed 😢 seeing what was once a railroad, a relic, go to ruins. Reminds me of the tunnel in Quebradillas, Puerto Rico, which I road the train as a child with my grandma and my dad. Also that area looks so much like El Merendero (Guajataca) between Quebradillas and Isabela,PR... Such are the memories! Maybe one of these days you can take us for a tour of those places Ken.

You've already been on one of Flagler's bridges...the old highway bridge that goes across Pigeon Key, in fact the whole older Seven Mile Bridge, was built on top of the RR bridge more than a century ago. The supports underneath are Flagler's original arches and viaducts.

@@ActionKid Actually the bridge itself is more than a century. The highway on top after the hurricane was 1938. There's a cool little book with lots of pictures documenting the whole story. Might still find copies in lots of south FL book stores. It's called "The Railroad That Died at Sea"...

They have wonderful snorkeling tours of the off coast reefs that are beautiful to dive. It’s nice to go out with a boat load of people and get in the water to see the sights together 👏👏👍😊

When you were filming from the bridge (approx 15.54 thru 18.21) did you notice the people were swimming and playing in the water that was a more greenish tinge? Is that the blue-green algae?

beautiful location, definitely jot it down as one of the place to visit. There's a similar broken bridge near St. Petersburg that's turned into fishing piers on both sides, amazing views.
