Saber Rider & The Star Explored - This Obscure Late 80's Action Mecha Cartoon Is A Diamond In Rough

- Sei Juushi Bismark, also known by the name Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs, was the earliest not-so-just-for-kids series to air on television outside of Japan. It was the first mecha series to feature true character interaction. The heroes did not waste the whole episode waiting for another onslaught inside their base. They enjoyed going on vacations, talking about their futures, and liking and loathing others. Yes, previous shows such as Battleship Yamato and the first Gundam series accomplished the same thing, but they were only available on VHS. Bismark also was the first series to use story twists. This was the very first time we saw traitors from the "good side", who weren't motivated by materialism, but rather by jealousy. It was the very first time we saw the protagonists lose due to their internal politics! The mood altered dramatically in the later part of the show, resulting in the first significant scenario change we'd ever seen. And it's much more fantastic because of it! Bismark's strong points are common in today's mecha and action series. But that doesn't alter the fact that it was the very first on television to present those standard features and prepare us for what was to come in the series after it.
That Intro Whip Crack. And the Guitar Riff... no wonder I like Heavy Metal
This was my absolute favourite series as a kid! I always hoped for a 3rd season, but maybe a good movie will be made sometime in the future...
The German dub was wildly successful as it breathed so much more life into the characters ( I'm sorry I can't listen to the english dub - it's so clunky and uninspired), so they made a little audio book. It takes years after the last episode, the star sherrifs broke up. Colt is living with Robin, April and Fire broke up and he's a race driver again. Then April is being kidnapped by ( a now mostly cyborg) Jesse Blue and the gang has to get together, save her and fight new battles.
I watched the whole series for the first time in the pandemic. Coming back to it every once in a while. It was never on TV in my country, but I love anime in this format, and I loved this series if you take the zeitgeist in mind.
Have you checked the Japanese series? It's even better, much was cut from the US version...
The soundtrack is awesome
An underrated gem of an anime.
A great and underrated series, thanks for covering it! If you like Saber Rider, the original Star Musketeer Bismarck is well worth hunting down in subbed form. There are a lot of continuing plots and nuances missing from Saber Rider. And while WEP did add six new episodes, they also cut out several of the original Japanese series eps as well. Those are also worth seeing!
After watching only the Bismark version for years and years, I had forgotten just how much was changed for the dub. And then they didn't even bother to dub the best three episodes of the series: 30, 23, and 42.
Childhood Memories, 👍👍👍, April is so cute ❤
An old time favorite
This and Macron 1 and Robotech introduced me to Japanese animation
ramrod & voltron are my two favorite robots till now 🤩😎🥰
The intro song was iconic...
Best anime ever created.
Loved this show ❤ Still watch it from time to time.
I have been looking for the name of this show foe ever!! Thank you!!
They don’t make cartoons like this anymore.
I loved this show when I was a kid in the 80s. I built ships like the show had out of my legos. It showed adults being adults, and the art style was so good.
Thank you, going to have to check this out! Keep up the great work.
I loved watching the Adventures of the Star Sheriffs when I was a little kid (And probably like most at the time, didn't know the term anime).
It's just that you can't watch the series as well today. Not because the animations are outdated. It's more because we now know that the series was heavily cut for the Western market. And when you watch it, unfortunately, you notice this very much. (The series is practically about a war. And no one dies as an example)
i used to watch this as a kid back in 1995. No wonder ive always liked fireball, i see myself as him and wanted him and april to end up together. The main character top-sword (inspite of all the character build-up & editing done by WEP), is simply uninteresting for me. Fireball rocks.
If only WEPTV can redubbed this series in it's original uncut Bismarck version
Yes it would be whack! The original was infinitely superior, or could we have a remake? This show deserves much more love.
“Mecha” is pronounced as in mechanical. Other than that, I enjoyed this summary so much. Good job! Loved this cartoon as a kid in the late 80s.
This is the show that introduced me to anime.
Always found it funny how the US version castrated the Japanese original (removed violence) and yet made it better in other areas (e.g., Perios/Jesse, Dale Schacker's glorious soundtrack, ...) and then the German dub of the US version made it even better by adding a bit more humor (like the givign the banter between the crew an additional edge).
With each change, the show gained another advantage.
i loved this as a kid in the 90's..
Try finding em toys...rare
Took me about a decade to track down the transforming DX Bismarck/Ramrod, but it was worth it!
And expensive
Classic anime I love it
Eh ... perhaps April doesn't end up with Saber Rider, because in the original, Fireball was actually the leader of the team? Because they couldn't recut the series enough to make her end up with someone else?
The theme song is epic. Also think of this as the Uchuu Keiji Series of Gavan, Sharivan and Shaider in anime form with super robots thrown into the mix.
Looks like a cool show
Hi! "Mecha" is pronounced "meh-kah", not "Mee-kaa". Also, it's Cavalry Command, not Calvary Command.
Sorry Miss but it's pronounced Mech-a and it's been pronounced that way only since the beginning! 🧐
Don't expect accuracy from an AI narrator
there was also live action tv serie smilar time. captain power solder of future. ı watched both same time. the cyborg oo9 legend of super galaxy also come smilart times. all tree have mature themes with sci fi action simlar to star wars.
This was my first anime and I am 41
Trigun is adult swim?
Not the most accurate info coming out of this video/channel
what annoyed me most about the series was that Colt, and the Bronco got only one scene where Colt used track by eye, which was kinda sad...
But the lady also appeared in the Japanese version.
Beyond the cave.
haha i was wondering why saber rider is the leader but cannot press the button
Because Fireball was the real leader in Bismarck
Quick question:
Was Nova, April Eagle's mechanical horse, a part of the original Bismarck anime?
No it was an original Saber Rider character like how Queen Merla and Cossack where original Voltron characters made after they ran out of stock footages for both Golion and Dairugger
@@ZarctheCelestialDuelist Thank you.
Your welcome
I'm not sure but wasn't there a movie
Where is the Videogame?
Way too many commercial scamming spammers responding here
Sorry guys but these British stereotyped guy never heard of period instruments.
Cavalry are horse mounted soldiers. Calvary is where Jesus died. I am almost certain you meant to say cavalry.
Sadly half of the soundtrack is missing and also the audio quality has gotten worse with each rerelease
MATIAS
Too bad that this Sei Juushi Bismarck / Saber Rider and the star sheriffs is spawned out by AI without any intervention from the uploader. That part, starting at 0:55, it from a completely different Bismarck series. Also, the AI generated script would have used some human intervention. I am disappointed.
You could not watch it cause some guy would not shut the heck up ! 🥱
