    The interview takes on a whole new meaning knowing Zero asking about lighting the candle got him the job by showing his main concern was for the guests and well being of the hotel.

      The way Gustavo is shocked and says "WHat?!," Then immediately "no" is the tell. I think it's the only time you see Gustavo get shocked.
      I agree. I think that's what gave him the job.

    • @wantonmee23

      I think the part where Gustave gets most impressed was Zero saying that the Grand Budapest was an institution. Zero must have been one of the few who saw being a lobby boy as more than a job.
      The candle scene is an indication that Gustave's care for his 'friends' is, to some degree, superficial. Also, it sets up Gustave's shock at the lady's death. If Gustave had lit the candle, maybe the old lady would not have died.

    • @daveruthenberg5669
      @daveruthenberg5669 Před 3 měsíci +5

      He doesn't give a shit about the candle. The "what" is supposed to indicate that Gustave had completely forgotten about it. As someone mentioned below, we're supposed to constantly question how Gustave really feels about his position. Is he a conman? Yes, he technically obeys the wishes of Madame D, but he sends an errand boy instead of doing it himself, and he knows the exact cheapest candle to buy and how much personal comfort he can grift out of the exchange. It's like when he compliments her corpse for changing the nail polish, a tender gesture, and then abruptly tosses away her hand in contempt and asks her servant for a drink (chilled, no ice please).

    It can be implied that the position of a ''lobby boy'' is held in serious regard by Gustave, for the boy is going to be raised as his pupil and maybe successor. His friends at ''the society of the crossed keys'' have this same habit of carefully bringing up their lobby boys and putting their trusts in them. That's why you can see Gustave treating this interview very seriously.

    Monsieur Gustave is impeccably written. There's a wisdom in realizing that 'nothing' is a whole lot easier to mold than something. Zero cinched the job at the family question, although he didn't realize it. There's an undeniable dignity imbued within a person who works their way up from nothing. I really enjoy Gustave later when he's in a fist fight sticking up for his immigrant employee on the train.
