P-61, J4M and other twin-boom or dual fuselage planes have broken/bugged hitboxes, so they're difficult to shoot down. I don't think that has to do with armor. ADAs are often bugged when nearing and after squall line, with extreme bullet resistance, basically no hitbox.
"Bullet fly distance" of 289 equates to around 3,410 feet (or around 1,040 metres, if you prefer).
