Ableton 12’s new features allow us to take a duration of rhythmic time and transform it into any even or odd grouping.
In this video I try two different ways of using this feature:
First approach - take a colorful vibey chord progression and divide it into a series of unpredictable rhythmic groupings.
Second approach - take three notes and assign each note a prime number as its rhythmic division.
Along the way we’ll add kick drums, evolving hi hats, bass lines, ethereal pads, and lyrical synth melodies.
This technique is a great way to add surprise and chaos into any kind of music but works especially well with electronic styles such as House, Hip Hop, Techno, Drum and Bass, and beyond. You can hear aspects of these ideas in the music of artists like Fred Again, Floating Points, Four Tet, Ben Böhmer, Anjunadeep, Flying Lotus, Thundercat, Domi & JD Beck, Kaytranada, and many more.

I really appreciate that you didn’t blindly commit to the polyrhythm just because it was different and because it was the thesis of the video. The exploration was interesting and worth the coverage even if it’s not the right sound on this one

Just my opinion but if the tuplet was on a halftime rhythm, I think it would accent the pattern more. Tuplets shine in an open space in a groove

That was a great video, it really does suck when you try something bold or different, expecting it to be something untapped or new and diverse, only to realise coming back to your comfort makes a better sound, however the exploration is still great itself, and the end product reguardless of methods, is probably the most important thing in alot of cases.

in Reaper DAW i can just change my grid to all those and i have hotkeys for all my grid settings spread across the top numbers line on my keyboard. even got one that changes any timing into triplets. I tried to use Ableton at first, didn't enjoy the set up at all and it was hard on my laptop cpu even just sitting.

So I guess Ableton or yourself need to develop an arpeggiator with programmable time divisions per 1st note , 2nd note etc
that could be great with velocity,poly-aftertouch /mpe 😅

What is the Midi pack I hear you plug, is it something you sell, and if so where how much, and what does it entail?
The info is interesting you share, and they're (the music info) delivered with a non-boring panache that is quite watchable... ~Inertia

@@kriss12loverap hard agree, a custom grid for any tuplets and even including swing/random offsets for that dilla time feel would be a huge addition
