Best Way to Clean Grout (EVER!!!)

- What's the best and fastest way to clean grout? This is the holy grail of cleaning questions (at least it seems that way to me). In this video we'll share a huge DIY cleaning hack with you that one of our fans, Ashley Selph, discovered. While being 9 months pregnant she built the Grout GrimeBuster 3000 because it was hard for her to clean the grout.
She was super nice enough to forward how she did it. The total cost is around $5. And let me tell you that it works AWESOME!!!! You can attach the Grout GrimeBuster 3000 to your drill which makes it easy, quick, and super efficient.
In a prior cleaning experiment I figured out that 1/4 cup of OxiClean added to 2 cups of warm water was the perfect cleaning solution for grout. You can pour this solution on to your grout and tile, let it sit for 5-15 minutes (or longer depending on the grime), then use the GrimeBuster to clean everything.

I'm currently in the process of making this. I've already bought the brushes from Target and will buy the other hardware from Home Depot. I'll make one for the bathroom and floor grout and one for the kitchen counters (tile) and sink. Such an awesome idea. Thanks Ashley and Jeff!
Used the oxyclean mixture as described and used a manual brush....it worked very well! Much better than other commercial cleaners!! Thank you!!
We tried this grimebuster on our bathroom grout with excellent results in a quarter of the time ...the tile hasn't looked so good since new !! Thank you Ashley and Jeff :)
I'm a 13 year old who just got a summer job. I have been cleaning peoples grout the old way but its been killing my back. This will make it so much easier. Thank you :)
Sawyer Hazelton good for you getting a summer job at 13!! Hopefully this makes your day go a bit easier and faster :D
adda boy....an entrepreneur at 13. Dont feel like you have to go to college if you dont want to: sounds like you may be on your way to your first $1M. Remember, only you can hold yourself down. Good luck, keep up the hard work and get a good accountant!
You go, Sawyer! A good work ethic starting at a young age with an honorable attitude is everything. When you get older take some business management classes along with an accounting class and your covered.
bleach left on for a few hrs no scrubbing
@@TheZodiacwarpspeed careful, you might have offended him by calling him a boy. It is 2019 afterall.
What an awesome idea!!! I've tried several non toxic DIY solutions/elbow grease to clean 6 years of imbedded dirt from the grout covering my WHOLE downstairs. I knew there had to be a better way and searched videos but only found ones that showed how to cut the handle from a brush and drill through the bristle part but to use a replacement soap brush head makes better sense. So, thank you for making this video and sharing.
Excuse me now, I'm off to the store... I've got some grout to clean!!!
Thanks for the fine video. Great suggestion for powdered OxyClean cleaning mix. Cleaned kitchen floor grount (not cleaned in 30 years). I poured solution on small area, let soak 15 min and scrubbed grout lines with a wallpaper brush (has a very narrow single line of bristles on a 12" handle), it fit perfectly into the grout line and was ideal!!! As with many commenters OxyClean does leave a residue, but with large professional-grade sponge and a bucket of water after three or so passes was able to clean it up properly - AND the benefit was the tiles themselves got very clean.
I haven't built the tool (YET); wrote down parts from watching video last month, and went to Lowe's today - a bust; bought wrong parts! So came back to your Video and only after reading lots and lots of comments did I discover your posted Parts List - as well as several very useful suggestions for slight improvements. I am planning on building as a useful DIY tool.
Hi Traci, great question. I was concerned myself and looked closely at my faucets. There weren't any scratches but it will depend on the bristles in the brush. Since the brush I used was specifically for dishes there is a minimal chance that you'll see scratches. So pick the brush carefully.
I liked how you spread the germs from the sink hole to the taps .
Made this many years ago. It does work, but make sure you don't use a round carriage bolt. The bolt needs hex sides for the drill to grip. Love this idea!
Jeff-great vid as always! This will work wonders in my classroom.
For those of you concerned with the size, I had incredible luck switching all the sizes to 1/4 (including washers/bolts).
For those concerned about the bolt possibly scratching surfaces, a little silicone gel covering the tip helps a bit, again as stated before, you cannot and should not push down with an extreme amount of pressure.
Keep up the good work Jeff!
Thanks Jim Pappas for the additional tips. Good to know a 1/4 inch bolt is equally as good. I like your silicone gel idea. Hope you like the next batch of videos :)
This is amazing. We recently moved into a home that wasn't kept too well. While the bathroom is on our list of updates, it isn't the priority. This is a great cheap option to help clean off the grime in the bathroom after decades of negligence.
+ImBrotherCain glad to help, we also have a new video series on bathroom remodeling that can help you with the planning...that way, when you're ready you'll be more prepared here's the link

I made this and cleaned my tile floor. It looks like new. Love it. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome, glad it worked. Thanks for sharing your results
Hi I'm currently trying to get a job in maintenance, and your video channel has really helped me learn and understand how to work around pipes and bathroom and sink stuff. Your video on how to repair a dry wall was great, thank you.
Josh Hernandez thanks so much for your kind words. Reading your comment made my day Josh. Hope the videos continue to help you :D
Thanks for this, I refinish hardwood floors and my customers always ask me about this, I will send them your video!
I need to try the cleaning solution for my tiles. I've bought the Turbo scrubber , as it reaches high up & below. I will try the oxi clean for my tiles . Thank you & brilliant video
I used it to clean my toilet and afterwards brushed my teeth. Thank you Grime Blaster 3000!
SimpleSimonSezz lol
Hahaha
Omg at least make another grime buster for your teeth.
Class 🤣😉
Lol
Did that 30 years ago with a fiber brush and AC powered 3/8 drill driver for cleaning anything but mostly a fiberglass boat. Baking soda and vinegar soak.
Awesome!!! I think that would work on spots on carpet as well! Thank you so much for sharing your idea.
This is a spectacular tutorial and new tool for your cleaning kit. I can't wait to make my own and start cleaning my grout.
I live in a 1955 apartment building with unsealed windows - pollution from the parking lot, the street and general dust and dirt enter my home non-stop.
For grout cleaning, I've always used an old, battery-charged, rotating, round toothbrush in combination with small amounts of either 409 grease cleaner (kitchen tiles) or clorox toilet bowl bleach (bathroom tiles). Works like a charm and feels kind of therapeutic while using it :) lol :)
Just built my grime buster 3000 today and this works great! Can’t wait to finish my floors tomorrow. You saved me 150 bucks because I was getting ready to hire Stanley Steemer to come over. Thanks man!
Where did you get the brush part, was it available at Target?
I just made one today using 1/4" size instead of 5/16". Was able to screw it into the OXO refill brushes, then fastened with washers and nuts. This thing works wonders!
Worked PERFECT for me!! Thank you!! I put the solution in a spray bottle and it helped a lot! I didn't waste as much and also I didn't make a big mess of water everywhere.
Thanks Cynthia Rodriguez-Ruesga for your tip :D
This is fantastic, perfect for cleaning and especially great for the elderly or any persons with disabilities to their hands. Thank you for sharing.....made my day.
Willetta Brantley my pleasure to help, especially with cleaning ideas. We all need new ways of cleaning :D
Wow!!! Thanks Ashley - what a life saver.
brilliant. I have always wished for this. I want a larger version too for larger spaces.
Use a nylon bolt so if you're using this on an uneven surface or a contoured item, like a faucet or shower head, you don't scratch or mar the surface.
This is amazing! WOW! I know what I will be picking up at the store!
Once again I thought this was very helpful and thank you Ashley.
cool beans
Needed this channel I am an apartment maintenance tech trying to get better.
Thank you Ashley and thank you for bringing his great idea to us.
You can buy scrub brush drill attachments now. Amazon $10-15 each, available in varying bristle stiffness levels. There's a $25 4-pk. w/all of them. We use 'em on our shower, non-skid boat deck, & carpets. They're _fantastic!_
That said, thx for the awesome tutorial! This is a great idea if you've got a back-breaking cleaning project, can't wait for shipping or can't afford it, and you've got this stuff around the house.
where is the link to help us find the ones that you like?
Cheaper if you follow this video. If you don’t like the hassle of buying these things and assemble your self, search it on amazon or ebay (all prepare and ready for you)
Resolve carpet cleaner is amaze-balls at breaking down grime on floor tile. I’m gonna have to try Resolve and this 3000 hack on an old kitchen floor that’s due for a scrub.
Awesome. So cheap and works great. Thanks for sharing, it helps a lot.
Good idea based on wire cup brushes, though you should be using carriage bolt instead regular hex bolt. Flat and rounded head will eliminate unnecessary damages to cleaned surface and especially edges or outside corners.
Love your comment about how it's taken people so long to invent this. I thought the same then I realized this was uploaded 8 years ago. Boy am I late 🤣 probably because I'm 30 now 😁
Yes, it was upload 10 years ago, and I just bought four configurations of this tool, all under $5.
This is the tool I am looking for! Great Great idea! Thank you so much. Love it
+Sadly LeCough (Yurimaru) glad you liked, let me know how it works for you
I just made this for my wife as a Valentine's day gift, now she won't stop cleaning the shower. Great gift for anyone with tile in their house.
glad she liked it
Hmmm.....I think for Valentines Day I would have made it AND cleaned for her. But that is a female's point of view.
Hope you're still married bro.
You should get her a lawn mower for Christmas ;)

I used a 24 inch long threaded 1/4 inch rod and a locking nut to hold the brush on the end with a regular nut and locking washer on the other side to hold the brush on the end. The extra length allowed me to use this standing or sitting instead of on my knees. I did my whole kitchen in 3 hours. Reversing the drill made cleaning each grout line much better. Worked very well. Those brush refills are at Target or Bed Bath and Beyond for about $4.00
Great idea Robert Butler - this is especially good for anyone with bad knees, hips, or back problems. Thanks so much for sharing.
Just used this baby and it works great! I took Jeff's advice and used it with OxyClean and warm water. It saves a lot of time and beats scrubbing the old fashioned way. I did small sections, about two tiles at a time and then wiped the dirty water away with a cloth. I tried mopping first, but it just put the dirty water back onto the grout. After I'm done cleaning all of the tiles, I will seal the grout. Again, thank you Ashley and Jeff!
ive tried everything and was amazed when i used warm water and VINAGER amazing 2 gallon of hot water 1 cup of vinager
I use Greased Lightening - and it is COMPLETELY amazing with this device. I've upgraded to a 6" bolt so that I didn't have to bend down so far. I would love to show you my before and after pictures! Thank you again and again. We have miles of tile in our house - so I do a little section at a time.
That's awesome Jackie Stefan - I'd love to see your pictures. You can join our private Facebook group and show everyone :D
Here's the link facebook.com/groups/hrtcommunity/
That is an excellent idea! Can't wait to try it!
Great idea. I have a steam cleaner as well. In combination, I'm sure I can get a lot of grout cleaning done quickly and effectively. Thanks for the tip. You're awesome bro.
Thanks TheBurntLemons - what kind of steamer do you use?
Great idea. I'd recommend covering the exposed threads on the bolt with a piece of vinyl tubing or similar to prevent possibly scratching things. The threads are pretty rough and spinning at high speed can do quite a number on faucets and the like.
Thanks Jill Vaslow for the fantastic tip. I like your idea and will put it into action :)

Hahahah!! The name is my favourite part of the video. This is awesome and I’m very excited to try it.
Rarely leave comments and had to for this one! Wouldnt advise powder like oxy clean on a large area as its hard to get off without a proper mopping and oxy is just bleach in a powder form so if your not afraid of bleach the soft scrub gel works great on grout. Often use this solution 1/4 cup dawn, 1/4 vinegar, lemon juice, 2 cups water in spray bottle warmed in microwave spray on grout and let sit for 10 min, also works on shower doors! Really, any solution works, scrubbing in circle motions is the miracle to cleaning grout and this little scrub brush has saved me so much elbow grease!
Oxyclean bleaches, but it is not powdered chlorine bleach. Oxyclean is a colorsafe chemical that would be more like hydrogen peroxide. It is safe for grout, while bleach can erode some grout over time. I clean my floors with Oxyclean, then use my Hoover Floormate to rinse and remove the water. No residue, but a mop and towels would work too.
I really liked your tip on building this nifty cleaning tool, I have another suggestion for its use. I own an older truck with low profile wheels and tires and the worst part of cleaning that truck is the wheel rims! They are wide spoked chrome rims with little nookks and crannies into which a normal scrub brush will not reach! This little baby will flex right into the inside curves and crevices and bring out the real sparkle of the rims! I spray a special cleaner on first, one which removes the grime that builds up from the disc brake pads on the front wheels and is a bear to remove any other way. Let your favorite wheel rim/ chrome cleaner sit for a few minutes and then have at it with this trusty scrubber. You will be amazed at the great results!
Just thought I'd share.

Sorry for the typo, my "k" key always wants equal time with my "o" key and, if I don't let them have it, they fight and it looks like I am either agreeing many times over or trying to knock somebody out!!
Great idea for other cleaning applications. For my shower however, I just use 'Wet&Forget' for showers. Easiest stuff I ever used for my shower. But I'm definitely going to try your brush idea for other stuff!!
I use Wet & Forget too lavatube11 and love it. That combined with this brush is a fantastic dynamic duo.
Excellent idea- Just made mine -thanks for sharing!
sweet, it's a great little tool.
I have one of those Sonic battery operated brush kits. Works great and allot lighter. Keep in mind that cleaning grout is a good idea, sealing it at least once per year, since the sealant wears off after several cleanings. Even better twice per year.
Fantastic !! Thank you Ashley! & home tutor
Thank you for the reply. I went to a local small hardware store a the man there put it together for me. Works great.
+cbass180 that's great!! Glad to hear it works like a champ :D
Awesome stuff!! Im so glad I just subscribed to this channel!!!!!
+Melissa Sherk thanks 👍
It worked awesome, thanks so much for the idea!!!!!
I loved it, thank you wise young man!
Thank you so much for making it a video !!
Absolutely genius!
I’m going to make this. I have a suggestion for you. If it is wall tile such as a bathroom shower wall. You can make a paste out of the Oxsee powder and apply it prior to cleaning with the brush after its been able to sit for 15 to 30 minutes.
They have brushes already designed for drills.
Yup a drill brush
This works so amazing!!! Thank you so much!!
Works pretty good. The key is Oxyclean and the drill cuts the scrubbing by 80%. My wide white grout was supposed to be sealed, but wasn't in the kitchen. After 10 years the kitchen had turned dark brown. The tiny steam cleaner damaged the grout. This cleaned it to a very light tan after 3 scrubs... time for bleach for full white, I think, then seal. I made his brush then found a kit on Amazon for $12; a kit that emulates a mini version of what the pros use, with pads and 3 brushes. The yellow bristle model is for tile. It's a small version of my Koblenz scrubber, but can get in the cracks.
Legend has it , he's still cleaning the grout in his house wit this lil minut cleaner
I absolutely love this! You just made my life so much easier! Thank you for sharing this!
Man...VERY COOL! Thanks so much for sharing! PEACE!
Jeff, I just did my multi-purpose solution as per your notes and works as you said. Excellent tip. Thank you.
That's awesome Antonio Moya - glad the tip helped you :D
Oh love the Grout Grime Buster 3000!
Thank you for this tip!

Thank you for simple & great advise!
Georgie Georgie my pleasure, hope it helps :D
This is a great idea. I'll make it this weekend.
+David Hinman sweet, keep me posted
Thanks - will give it a try!
Why didn't you use the contraption to remove the flowers from your shower, as seen in this video?
Great idea, thank you for sharing it ! :)
Grout 66(do not get on metal/natural stone)....., knee pads, clean water, grout brushes, new sponge... Put it on, let it sit for less than 10 seconds, scrub it and get it up immediately with sponge,, so it doesn't Settle back down. Awesome video.
Great job, thanks for posting this video
I improved the design slightly by using thumb turn nuts instead of regular hex nut that requires the use of a wrench.... worked perfectly and easily compressed the lock washers by hand!
+raerae16416 great suggestion, next time I build one that'll be the design
I need those brush heads desperately!! Help! Thank you!!
Mary Taylor they are in the cleaning section of Target where the kitchen cleaning supplies are located :D
What a great idea. So simple to build. Thanks!
Steven Parente thank you, let me know if you ever have any questions :D
I literally spent 2 hours on my hands and knees scrubbing 50 year old bathroom grout today 😩 still have several rooms to do so I'm definitely going to give this a try! I used vinegar to clean my grout and worked great but it required a lot of elbow grease. I'm going to try the oxy clean in the next bathroom!
Elisabeth Cannon
Great tip! Do you remember what the diameter on that hex tap bolt is? Or what the diameter of the center hole is on the palm brush refills? Thanks!
I love it. I have to try this.
Robi makes a nice 6inch disc wheel like that. Check Home Depot and Lowe’s. It’s made for a Robi floor scrubber
Made this and detailed the crap out of my car nothing stood up to it iv been wanting to buy one of these for a while because i saw a car detailing shop use one and it was great but i nvr thought about making one... thanks a lot man!
Sweet, thanks uzis4life - glad you liked it and hope your car is shiny as all heck!!
Yes it is!! Lol

I totally agree Voip Umn :)

I did my GB 3000 and it worked, different cleaning solution though. Thanks for the life hack Ashley and Jeff
Great job Darnell Bradwell - what cleaning solution did you use? Sounds like it worked pretty good :D
UHS it's a heavy duty floor cleaner.
Thanks buddy

Cool idea! Thanks!
this is great, a similar solution in Amazon costs $50+!
Thank you
Whew, that's pricey Ramon Sierra - thanks for your kind words.
Brilliant. Thanks, Jeff and Ashley. I'm heading to Home Depot now.
Keep me posted Ron Acker - hope you like it.
Certainly did well impressed bud
Thanks for this!
jeff ,I like to say this is A wonderful way to clean stuff, thank U SO MUCH to teach us to have easy way ,your are A full brain,we proud of you. BRAW..........OOOOOOOO.
Thanks so much shahen kesheshian you're awesome.
Not sure if it has been noted before but your instructions need to say "full threaded" 5" 5/16 bolt. Since you have Lowes listed part numbers the one you need for this project is H#883157. They are found in the specialty drawers above the bulk nuts and bolts.
Speaking from experience it can be frustrating to get home after having followed your shopping list only to find that you don't have the correct bolt.
Oops, sorry about that Patrick M - I completely agree with the frustrating supply list issue. Hope the brush works for you
I wish I had seen your correction BEFORE going to Lowe's. Thanks, Patrick M!
Awesome idea, thanks
Very good video. Thank you.
this is amazing!! thanks so much for the tip!!!
YESS1R glad to help any time :D
