Was there with my other half. We were on the other side of the hall and didn't realise why he stopped this song. So glad he continued on and tried again. Absolute disgusted by the very small group of asshats who thought that their own voices were more important than the show we had all paid to see....had goosebumps at this. What a voice

I went to see him in Cardiff and the crowd was exactly like this. He said at one point “thank you to those of you that listened to that” and it was so frustrating. Nobody appreciating the amazing music that this guy was performing for us. Most people seemed just absolutely hammered like it was a club. I left before the end because of it which was gutting because he’s one of the best people I ever saw live 8 years ago.
EDIT: Just finished the video and saw he said the same at the end here.

I'm an old broad in the Southern U.S. and I've been listening to Paolo for many years. I've not had the chance to see Paolo live, but he's definitely on my bucket list. I enjoy having his studio work to listen to in the car, but I truly prefer catching live performances here on CZcams. Whether doing his own stuff or putting a personal spin on a cover, his ability to deliver a tale is amazing. So, so very refreshing to hear a voice that isn't homogenized to the brink of death with Autotune. It's been a personal joy to watch him grow as a performer.

His performance was amazing! I can’t believe the entire audience wasn’t enraptured.
On the opposite end of this behavior: About ten years ago I saw Justin Hayward in Seattle. His audience tends to be hardcore, decades-long fans. The opening act was fingerstyle virtuoso Mike Dawes, also the guitarist for Justin’s band. No one had ever heard of this kid before. He came out to faintly polite, bored applause from a roomful of people who only wanted Justin. Twenty-five minutes later the entire theatre was on its feet, stomping and whooping and demanding an encore. It was incredible! One of the best nights of my life.

That took an immense amount of self control and a huge set of balls. The first attempt he wasn’t feeling and the power in his voice showed that. The thing he did that made the difference was how he ended the first attempt. It got the crowds attention but it wasn’t overboard he let th know he was pisses and he turned his back on them and notice it quiet. Then he collected himself and said this is my stage and my song I’m singing it! And he started lower and with power and immediately the crowd was like wait this may be something. Then he let them have it that voice. This song is so amazing but it hinges on that build up and it takes a while to develop and he uses this as an opportunity to learn how to sing this song live and make it work in a concert venue like this. He did an amazing job. This was before the album was released I think and if you want the big outdoor concert he did after the release the crowd is into bc they know what’s coming and being patient through that build up is going to pay off and the anticipation fuels the crowd. I love that I found this video. I love Paolo and when gets over here in the US for more than one day I’ll be there to see him live. This just show how good of an artist he is and how passionate ge is about his music. Great stuff!

This was in Oban, Scotland, and if I'm not mistaken it was among the first shows after many years of not performing and fans waiting for him to come back with new material. It was really hard to get tickets, the show was sold out very fast, probably people were drunk and over excited. Reminds me of Bob Dylan's shows in the Uk in 65, when tickets were selling really fast, he was in high demand, yet he would get booed for not playing what the fans were demanding. It's hard to get your message across to crazy fans.

I understand this was his first gig after 8 years. I feel that some people embraced his new music and some people just wanted to hear his old stuff and were not prepared to give the new a chance. For example, I loved hearing his new music and told my daughter, who went to see him at a later concert. She, however, felt so disappointed at his new direction and re-working of some of his old songs. She was closed towards his new material. I was shocked at her reaction and wondered if we saw the same set, but we did. I think his new material split audiences a bit. I personally feel glad that he continues to grow and change as an artist.

I sympathise so much with this & have played too many times in places where there's a drunk rowdy crowd, or a venue that's totally unsuited to live music. There's nothing worse & it can be absolutely soul destroying. I always remember advice an old teacher gave me that no matter what happens you keep going, put on your best face & be as professional as possible. I love Paolo Nutini & really admire him. He dealt with that situation so well & by the end of the song he'd managed to capture most of the crowds attention, but it's so disrespectful to such a great artist. Good advice Fil & great analysis as always.

I love that you always respect artists, no matter who they are or what kind of music they play. You deserve respect for that yourself. Now, about the audience, they are pigs. You dont talk while someone is trying to sing, that is simply bad manners, like talking while someone else is talking. Jim Morrison would have screamed at them to SHUT UP !!! He did it once, it's in one of the live albums, then he talked nicely to them trying to reason, but the frustration mounts up to where you want to say F***k You ! I don't even like it when it's a restaurant and there's live music and you can hardly hear it, that is wrong. You don't have to care for the music or the performers, but have the decency to shut up or speak quietly, if you need to .

I’ve been to concerts where people are obnoxiously inebriated and are so not into the music presented to them. It’s intimate and the listener isn’t interested in the musician’s story that he is sharing. I’m so glad you recognized this in the relationship between an artist and the group of people with whom he is sharing his personal thoughts. The guitar is also telling his story. @@michelle88960 Thank you, I definitely will. 🙂
I know what you mean about a few rowdy idiots. I live in Hamilton, Ontario, which is a very big (little) music city, near Toronto. We have quite a few bars and small venues that bring in bands, and I've been to more than my share of shows where there were obviously people who were just there to drink, and didn't have a clue about who was on stage. Instead of just enjoying their drinks, and talking amongst themselves (or, you know, going to another bar) why do people like that always decide that the best course of action is to ruin the night for everyone else...the band and everyone who's there to see them?
Although I've seen it more than once, one incident in particular stands out. Almost 15 years ago, the lead singer of Teenage Head, Frankie Venom, died...young (only 51) and unexpectedly. Teenage Head were a punk band from Hamilton....since the 70's, this city has embraced and loved them as punk icons. So, when he passed, a bar downtown had a tribute show. The other members of the band, plus musicians from across the country were there to pay their respects to Frankie. This show was a big deal, and it was advertised everywhere. There's no way you could have gone to the bar that night, not knowing what was happening. But, the idiots were out in force. Why? They clearly weren't into the music, and that street has at least 5 other bars within walking distance where they could have gone. It was a night for the city, fans of the band, and other musicians to show their love for a Canadian music icon that we had lost way too soon. To act like a complete goof at an event like that is just so disrespectful....they were booing and heckling everyone who got on stage, as well as trying to pick fights with people who were there to see the show. Luckily, that night, all of us who were there for Frankie were able to drown the idiots out, and make it clear that we weren't going to play into their nonsense.
I just don't understand what people get out of acting like that? 😒

But to do it when it's a tribute gig to somebody who is loved and passed away so young is beyond idiotic. They should have been thrown out.

As others have said, this was an early show in Oban, Scotland when only 2 songs had been released from the album. So it seemed like a combo of a whole bunch of issues. The booing was in response to his saying that this was his last song, so that's almost excusable. I've also heard that this was a bit of a showcase where a lot of the tickets were given away to industry folks and "influencers" instead of his straight up fans. It's also the end of the night when people have been drinking for 5 hours. This was also when big shows started to come back after lockdowns in the UK, so they're in a party mood. Quite a good number of his new songs are slow, or at least start out slowly.
I remember seeing this video come out and I was devastated to see the attendees being so obnoxious. He's from Scotland, and he's respected as one of the best to do it from Scotland. I'm glad he got through it. He's amazing.

I love your analysis of this performance. I feel for him this is a Scottish crowd who should be grateful to see a fellow countryman giving his all. He will probably disappear again for another 7-8 years after this. I wouldn't blame him.

I hope he won’t! I saw him this year in Luxembourg, and the audience showed hell lot of love, he certainly felt it. The show was brilliant, best day of my life! I’ve waited for 8 years to be able to attend, travelled thousand miles and spent shitload of money, totally worth it. But I won’t survive another 8 years break. I hope he’s happy and will continue creating masterpieces such as Everywhere.

    P.S. to Paolo Nutini's Everywhere:
Fil, this song in its entirety would be a great followup to the video of Nutini's rude audience. The dynamics throughout the entire composition are sneakily complex and worthy of analysis. Anyone who admires and appreciates complex dynamics will go nuts over it, as I did listening for 2 hrs straight. Just one example here: a 5+ minute song, it starts with his vocal and finger-strumming his acoustic guitar, and as it progresses, another instrument comes in every few lines, cleverly and subtly emphasizing particular words. So at 1:07 the organ slides in, followed by bass drum precisely on 'I belive you', and in a few moments, electric rhythm guitar. A few more lines and at I Love You, both rhythm and bass guitars increase volume. Tremolo only on his words describing his love; nowhere else in the song. You get the idea. All this attention to detail and we haven't gotten to lead guitar and cymbals yet, or more organ/ keys, strings/ synth, and the melody the bass shifts to. The intensity builds so methodically that I found myself wondering where exactly it had begun increasing. This dynamic gem only builds and builds, never backing off or lightening the emotion until the resolve in the final two notes. Awesome.

This was Paulo’s first gig after his 8 years absence…. The hall in Oban is like a large village hall and the crowd were actually very enthusiastic - but the drink was definitely flowing as the bar was so easily accessible within the hall. I think the (standing) crowd started getting a bit rowdy when Paulo said it was his last song -I really feel they just wanted more as this was such a huge moment in everyone’s musical calendar. I was there and I just loved every moment! I also saw him a week ago in the very large Ovo Hydro in Glasgow (night 3 of 5 sell out shows!) and he was absolutely phenomenal! He’s the most incredible and passionate live performer who just improves with age. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👏

Leaving time between songs with a rowdy crowd gives them the advantage. This singer should have read the room and not delayed with chit-chat, but just switched to an uptempo song selection and forged ahead, thus allowing the crowd to expend their energy with the beat. The slow ballad could come later once they'd settled.

Great presentation Fil! I have never heard of Paolo before, but first thing I noticed about his voice after the song got going, was that as he progresses to higher notes he has a great Mowtown/Blues grovel quality. As far as an audience who is uncooperative at best-in 1984, my band played a “Battle Of The Bands” at our State Fair (Illinois….uggh). The criteria, was that every band had 15 minutes, and they wanted ORIGINAL material only. There were 11 bands from different areas of the state, and we were slotted to play as the 6th band. I penned 5 songs under 3 minutes each for this, and we rehearsed like tomorrow wasn’t gonna ever show. The 4th band announced that their keyboard player couldn’t make it, they were allowed to “play along” with a back track-which happened to be Van Halen’s “Jump”. My first thought was…”Wow, did they actually WRITE that?” But, they were allowed to use it-and every band after that was totally disrespected by the audience. All we could do, was drown out the crowd, and play like we were rehearsing. The show must go on, as they say. We ended up with 2nd place and the band who played along with “Jump” took 1st, but I ended up with offers to sell a few of my songs. But I will never forget that audience being “out of touch” with all of us bands who came with all original stuff. It’s a very odd feeling-like “Well, I guess I stepped off the bus at the wrong stop” kinda thing. Great artist, and a great show Fil!!!

Man alive! That was a rude audience! If they didnt like the band or their songs, they shouldn't have gone there to begin with, or at least have respect for others and tone it down. so they could enjoy the performace, or leave. If I were him, I would've just walked off that stage, but he stayed and performed anyway, and I admire him for that. I don't know Paolo Nutini, but I think this was a lovely song and that he had a great voice. I think he did a great job performing inspite of the rude crowd. They did seem to settle down when he got into the song though. Thank you for sharing, it was another great analysis!

This reminds me of playing as an opening act for a headliner from a totally different genre. I experienced that when playing in a California band that was similar to the Eagles and we were booked by clueless promoter and booking agency to open for Herbie Hancock at the Whiskey in LA. It was clear from the get-go the crowd was not in our corner and we had to sweat through a 40 minute set of primarily original material to kill time before HH came on. We won over about half the crowd by the end of the set, but coming right out and discussing our mutual situation and just asking for a chance to umpress them with our musicianship, even though we weren't what they were used to listening to. Too many clueless booking agents back in the day I'm afraid. They were like used car dealers.

I try to be extra attentive to opening acts because I know it's such a thankless job! I don't understand why people can't just be courteous. If they're truly horrible, can't sing on key, instruments out of tune, have a bad attitude and don't seem to care, that's one thing. That's on them. But if they seem to be competent musicians even though they may not be your style, there's no reason to be yapping the whole time or worse, booing / yelling. Have some common decency. Sheesh!
