Over the past several decades, “The Great Race” has become a vital part of the fabric of Australian motorsport, and by extension, Australian culture. How did the Bathurst 1000 change Australian motorsport? How has one event given the racing world everything from V8 Supercars to the R32 GT-R known as “Godzilla?” And what about it has made it a cultural icon? Today on Past Gas, it’s the history of the Bathurst 1000.

Every time you guys tried to do the Aussie accent, you sounded like an English pirate 🤣
I was waiting for them to finish every sentence with "Aaaaaargh"
@@Phatzo1000 😆
Yep they didn’t do a good job of it
GTR Godzilla name was a translated name created by Australias Wheels magazine. I still remember the cover. This was on/before launch before it earns the reputation in racing.
I always thought the name stuck or was used because Godzilla conquered the mountain,
FYI Phillip island is where the Australian Moto GP is held. Phenomenal circuit
The Godzilla name for the Skyline first came from the Australian car magazine Wheels on the cover of the July 1989 issue covering the new car. Well before it was raced here.
26:24 prior to 1987 there didn't used to be a kink, and conrod straight used to go straight through to Bill Murray corner. The Kink was added because the FIA didn't allow straights to be more than 1200m.
yeah it was added so they meet FIA regulations so they could join the Group A racing of the time.
Partially. Even before the FIA got involved, the decision was made by the ARDC to install the Chase after Mike Burgmann was killed during the 1986 race when his Commodore got airborne on the second of the two humps on Conrod and ended up crashing into the Dunlop bridge. The Chase was to slow the cars down and to eliminate that section of Conrod altogether.
You can try to crash your rental at bathurst - but the cops will get to you before you can. speedlimit is 60kph
What a great little tribute to the greatest touring car series ever (in my biased opinion). Growing up watching V8 sedans race on Sunday, and then being able to walk into a dealer on Monday and buy a largely similar family sedan. Those were the days, before the SUV-pocalypse. Thanks for this trip down memory lane lads!
The Bathurst 1000 is insane especially some of the crashes that happen there
Let’s goooo as an Aussie and a ford fan I can’t believe that you guys recorded a whole podcast dedicated to Bathurst
Another great episode - thanks for reading my story during listener mail! Keep up the great works and congrats on number 1 AND 2 Automotive Podcast!
I spend time watching older v8 Austrian super cars just love the power and little tire and the wildness of the races
My grandparents owned the pub next to the bridge back in the 1960's.
The bridge was an old wood construction that rose off the bitumen road between the pub and the pier / wharf.....home to a crayfish fishing fleet.
The supports were solid with lots of concrete, but the bridge itself was not.
The new bridge is a little forward of the old bridges position and has a bitumen top.
Wow. I'm an Australian born local born in 1970 and I've never heard of a homologated '64 EH Holden made for Bathurst. One of those would be worth a proper fortune now. The S4 hey? They would be rarer than hen's teeth now.
"Land Train's" are just called trains 🤣
"Road Train" is the terminology
Don Bain is my great grandfather. Thank you for mentioning him
Time for another podcast, always enjoy these 👍🏼
Most countries wouldn't have known many Japanese "monsters" back in those times. There was no internet, manga and most other Japanese things were unknown outside Japan...only a very few thing's made it out by then like Astroboy and Godzilla.
Glad you guys corrected Phillip Island. I cringed with the first couple of Phillips Island slip ups lol
Phillip Island Grand Prix Track is where the Australian World Superbike & MotoGP Grands Prix are held each year.
Perfect timing! I'm just leaving work.
I am surprised that a film aficionado such as James was unaware of snow in Australia. "The Man from Snowy River" being a thing.
Well yeah the Aussie Alps gets more snow than the french alps
Crystals don't power anything. Some crystals vibrate predictably when electricity is applied. That vibration can then be counted as pulses and boom, a clock.
Nolan with the mindforce merch. Fire.
The HK 327 monaro they show is only a replica of the race winner the actual winning car's whereabouts is one of australias motorsports greatest mysteries .
At some point Barry Mulholland owned it (according to Wikipedia) but I'm assuming it's gone missing since.
@@Megaphone77 yeah it was so long ago I read the story it was in an actual magazine lol. I think it was traced through a couple of owners then just disappeared. Some theories are it was crashed and destroyed, was exported to NZ , or in some shed just waiting to be rediscovered . I believe there was also a large reward for any info that lead to it's discovery,in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
"The place, the track, the race, the people"
Sounded like "the bass, the rock the mic the treble"
I’d love to see an episode on Alfa Romeo or at least the 155 and how it dominated DTM
I'm hyped
I'm pretty sure they skyline was named after the skyline section at the top of bathurst mountain
Always there for me homies
Just bought my first donut shirt at zumiez got a cars are pain shirt and a couple stickers and gotta say I am pleased with the quality and fit of the shirt. Nice job guys
Oh and good podcast too watch every one
I love driving the Mt panorama circuit on the odd occasion I'm in Bathurst. It sucks the speed limit is 60kph and there are speed cameras with heavy penalties, so you just need to imagine you're in a v8 doing 320kph down conrod straight and not an i6 falcon! Lol
Also mayo is a term used here for giving it something extra. So if you throw a cricket ball in hard to the wicketkeeper unnecessarily, or get a ball to really rip when bowled then you've put some mayo on it.
Fun fact about crowd funding a movie, super troopers 2 was financed from an indiegogo campaign
That's sadly not true when Ford aus died first tbe year or 2 prior is when the rivalry started to die the holden fell and the rivalry pretty much has died here very few talk like gm and Ford and everyone still flies holden flags unfortunately the great rivalry is dead
Phillip Island is used now for Moto GP and Supercars I'm sure
I’ve been to Phillip Island before! Not the racetrack, we drove past that, but I have been on the island itself! Also, I was like 6 so I don’t remember anything.
Try the go kart track. It's a scale copy of the real circuit.
Sorry guy's it's not the Nuenberg ring 35 mph speed limit
Jim Richard’s is not an Australian but a Kiwi New Zealander
Damn now I have to go un-rubber the floors at my little house gym 😮💨.
Peter Brock actually won Bathurst 9times, not 8. Between 1972 & 87.
Good morning Donut Podcast Admin
From Melbourne here, have been to Philip Island a bunch . Yes they rebuilt the bridge, Yes there's a ferry service, and Yes they rebuilt the track. In fact the Australian superbike grand prix is held there every year.
Also, I want to thank y'all for cleaning up the Godzilla story and this means you can stop calling a mustang 🤮 Godzilla IMMEDIATELY!!!
FYI in you don't pronounce the h in Bathurst. The h is already used for the bath... You guys keep saying Bath-Hurst. It's Bath-uhst. 38:58 its CON-ROD straight, as in a car con-rod, you know the thing that connects the piston and the crank?
have you guys ever done an episode on gran turismo
The Gibson Motorsport developed Nissan Skyline GT-R was so good that Nissan put pressure on them not to race it in Japan as planned as it would have outperformed the Nismo factory team.
Wink Wink
I never had a mentor. No wonder I'm a 38 year old dingleberry working at Walmart shopping for other people..
Also I applied for Donut using past-gas sponsor Indeed . You can hire Ryan Adams through ur sponsor Indeed. Imagine the commercial we can make. After hiring Ryan Adams through indeed.
This year will be the 60th anniversary of the moody blues ford campsite ontop of the mountain (my family/friends)
If you guys make it over come pay us a visit 😉
Those Aussie accents are fkn shocking 🤨🤣
Amazing pod! Obsessive Australian Bathurst follower so nothing new to me but the delivery and comedy along with it made me stay up listening and laughing. Have been following Donut Media for years and only found out about this pod when someone uploaded it to the Supercars Australia Reddit page. Have added a bunch more to my "watch later". Smashing it boys.
Motorspo4ts in Australia has suffered ever since they went to v8 supercars.
If your clean when you get out of the shower how does your towel get dirty? 😂
Cool story
We have a restaurant here that has ketchup but they make you ask for “sissy sauce” 😂
As awesome as the R32 was and being local to south west sydney I saw it race at a track called Oran Park it had some advantages in it's 4WD and 4WS system that gave it a huge advantage over anything else. The R32 would have demolished any equivalent GT car of the era let alone the Sierra's, M3's and Commodores. Only group c and F1 cars were faster at the time.
Some how "one eyed monster" (Hitotsume-kozō) is less racist then "Godzilla" a reference to an unbeatable Japanese behemoth?
Y’all need to add some didgeridoo music to your Australia-focused episodes.
the aussie gtrs were the fastest in the world, nismo wouldnt let gibson race them anywhere else
wow Donut podcasts not doing so well....154 likes in 11 hours and Past Gas is the best thing on this channel
I couldn't agree more.. the preference of street cars rather than race cars. It's one of the reasons I don't watch nascar, indy,f1 yadda yadda. My dad is into circle track dirt racing. Me I don't want to spend all that money on a car I can't even drive to work..lol . Yet he( my dad) doesn't care about drifting, drags, or rally. He also only likes American cars so ya. He liked my dodge stealth but not my lancer ralliart turbo 😂lol
Hire Ryan Adams
In the sixties most of the Bathurst race cars had registration plates and were driven to the track as a shakedown running in test of the cars. Race rules specified showroom condition and winners post race checked for illegal mods.
Poor old Peter got sucked in by some charlatan guru, and he hasn’t lived down the crystals idea since.
Sadly Peter Brock was killed on the same day as Steve Irwin
Steve Irwin 4th, Brock 8th.
@@gusdrivinginaustralia6168Never let facts get in the way of a tragic story.
Peter Brock died in a replica of a Cobra Daytona.
The original 1964 Cobra Daytona was designed by the US Peter Brock working for Shelby at the time.
Great CZcams five part vid on it by searching for :
Peter Brock Cobra Daytona.
*godzirra
Darn not first 5. .
Good morning from Oregon, bros.
Hire Ryan Adams
who tf is Ryan Adams?
A shameless nobody with adhd and a constant need to be the center of attention.
The name 'Monaro' is variously believed to be: derived from the Aboriginal word 'Maneroo', meaning plain, or. an Aboriginal word meaning 'the navel' or 'a woman's breasts'. 🤣
You gotta stop with the really bad accent, it's so bad it's borderline offensive lol
but you're forgiven for the Mindforce tee
The GTR was only kick ass because of the Australian builder's and tuners working on Nissan's in Australia 🇦🇺
Gibson Motorsport.
same with the Sierra Cosworth, DJR pushed the limits and were the fastest.
What's with the British accent, bathurst is in Australia.....
Speaking of ketchup just being sugar… why do they even put sugar in it??? I buy sugar free ketchup and it taste the EXACT SAME. Like wtf, who’s asking for sugar in ketchup anyways?! Heinz, stop it!
Bc sugar is in everything bc it triggers the brain like blow and makes people buy more of their product
Hahaha big trucks are not called land trains we call them Road Trains. You never want to try overtake one on a corrugated dirt road. Shut your eyes hold your breath and pray to your or any god that you make it through.
It’s Phillip island.
And Jesus, you guys have the worst Aussie accents I’ve ever heard.
Still, top content :)
different things were cheating not winning.
If you can't hold the accent then please just don't even try
How do you even mention the word Bathurst and not even show a single supercar, how Blasphemic.
Stopped watching when they switched to cars I don't care about... Mustang and Camaro ... few and far between here.
They had to choose something.
Unpopular opinion ketchup is childish
Probably should have got some actual Aussies for this episode boys..
Your performance was shall I say in Aussie...
That was shithouse mate..🤔
Worst Aussie accents ever! But funny as…. 😅
The bathursf 1000 started losing followers as soon as it went to v8 supercars.. and the cars were no longer cars that were slightly modified road cars you could buy..
If they televised the modified production series that gets ran instead of the v8 superfails i bet the race would be watched again by more people that were originally interested in it.. because the modified production series is exactly what bathurst 1000 started out as... but every manufacturer now has more technology so its a very even field now
Their is production car racing. The 6 hour runs at Bathurst every year. The series tours the country. Yet every single person who makes this comment everywhere doesn't seem to either be aware it exists or just doesn't follow it.
I am also disappointed that the Bathurst six hour production car race is not well known and supported.
Unfortunately has been dominated by very expensive BMW M series cars for what seems like ten years now.
Originally Bathurst classes were priced based to what the Australian buying public could mostly afford.
did yall really let him slide lying about stealing a larry the cable guy bit? i know he’s compulsive but that’s low.
Ty for actually getting the names of the cars pretty down pat 😚🤌 props
I’m not sure how complimenting Nissan on their beast of a car that ate up the whole field by calling it the Godzilla is racism but ok 😂
