  • In this double episode, Nolan, Joe and Jeremiah discuss one of the most infamous engineering feats you’ve never heard of: The Snow Cruiser. With tires that were ten feet high, and a cabin big enough to house four researchers, this behemoth was meant to conquer the southern ice fields of the Antarctic. But as we'll see "The Penguin" may have been the biggest engineering disaster in all of automotive history.

    I love how they are like oh shit that’s going into winter! But in the Southern Hemisphere that would be Spring going into Summer. Then again depending on how long the ship rides take it may take them into fall, possibly winter if conditions were really bad,assuming they left from Europe. But if they set off from South America it would be a pretty ideal time to explore season wise.

    SOME people don't like ice in their drink in Europe, because 1. the drink is already cold out of a fridge, and 2. more ice == less drink. You're basically paying for half a glass of ice, and then half a glass of whatever drink you ordered. waste of money that.

      @jacksawyer7300 Před 4 lety +1

    17:48 - Yes, Japan sent in explorer Nobu Shirase during 1911-1912. He gave up on the race to the South Pole - by then Amundsen and Scott (as you mentioned) was far too ahead - and instead did metrological and scientific investigations around the Great Ice Barrier in the Ross Sea. There was an area, which turned out to be part of the Antarctic Ocean that was frozen during Shirase's expedition, that was formerly named Yamato Setsugen (or Yamato Snow Plains). A couple of places in Antractica are now named after him and his expedition ie Shirase Glacier and Shirase Coast.

    The theory that the snow cruiser fell into the ocean is supported by reports of sights of big drifting ice portions with what looked like some open rooms on the vertical outer walls.
    So the snow cruiser most likely got ripped apart and sank into the ocean when the driftet out ice portions melted

    I’m a huge fan of yours and I literally spend days watching and rewatching all your videos, but this time I strongly disagree with you guys. You made Sir Ernest Shackleton look like a complete fool, but in reality he was a great explorer and an even greater leader. Sailing one century ago was a whole different thing than it is now: there were no tracking devices and ship-building techniques were basically the same as the ones found in previous centuries. Thus, attempting an exploration in Antarctica was like signing a death certificate. During the expedition, Shackleton’s vessel got stuck in ice. After desperately trying to dig the ship out, it was decided to wait for the ice to open. The ice ultimately crushed the ship, leaving the whole crew with nothing but a few sleds, ammo, their dogs and not much else. Everyone knew that no one would have been sent from the UK to rescue them, so it all depended on them. When food supplies were gone, the crew started hunting penguins and seals; after months of desperate fighting, they ultimately decided to eat their beloved dogs. Long story short, Shackleton managed to save every single one of the 27 crew members by sailing an extremely small open boat to the nearest inhabited island in the Atlantic Ocean (South Georgia) to ask for help. At this point, more than one year has passed since they left England. The saddest part of the story is yet to come: soon after all this happened, WWI was declared and all crew members were called to fight for their country. None of them survived. Google this story, it deserves to be told very differently.
