    I agree with your on bigger guidebooks v LWBs... BUT, as a glasses wearer 68 year old, a larger font is always appreciated. For example, the Silver Acorn Guidebook uses an effing 2pt font (may be exaggerating here) but dang, I need a magnifier to read it and there is ample space on the page to have accommodated something more reasonable. Beautiful deck. Thank you for sharing it!

      I have the same problem with the Silver Acorn guidebook! I even reached out to the creator to see if I could get a PDF (not available). She was very nice and said she’d take my feedback into consideration for the next edition. I’m planning to use a scanner app on my phone to create my own digital copy I can zoom in on.

    Hi, this is my deck :) Ive forced myself to watch all reviews even if they are bad ! I just want to say even though I can see your not a fan I appreciate you taking the time to review! I mainly self publish oracle decks so I knew Id be opening up myself more with the mass market tarot and I was honestly afraid of that 😂 Im glad you like my art though I can forgive the dragging if you at least enjoy that 😂. I drew this almost 5 years ago and think I would tweak a few things now but I love getting in peoples heads and finding out how It could have touched them more! I gotta get in that brain. I couldn't make decisions on things like paper and box sizes but ive noted that for any of my own that I make again in the future :D

      I know you’re asking theia but I can’t help myself 🤠. I was planning on getting this deck and won’t be getting it now for a few reasons and could totally overlook those few reasons if it had just been in a tuckbox with a lil white book. I’m a tarot nut and it’s easier to collect and want to get beautiful decks if they’re in their smallest form and easy to store. If I bought this deck I would have to throw out the box and guidebook and put it in a bag where I would constantly forget what it is and it would just languish on the shelf. If I didn’t have tons of decks and was new this wouldn’t be a good deck to have or start with because of the things theia mentioned about the guidebook especially but also some of the images like the seven and eight of pentacles. Gimme that tuckbox version!!!!
      Anyway, love your art!!

      Hey! I'm really glad you commented! The world you've created is really enchanting and the overall mood of the deck is super unique and I really love that about it. Definitely I would imagine US Games was in total control of the packaging and marketing of the deck so there's nothing against you or your work related to the packaging criticisms (Their editors should have caught the typo's too). It's seems to be a trend I see happening across the board that I'd like to weigh in on as a voice for less packaging wherever possible. I will say that because of the substantial size of the guidebook there was an opportunity and space for a great deal of depth and detail within the descriptions of the guidebook that was missed. A space to share some of your personal and unique connection to the cards of the tarot in a deep, creative and interesting way. A glimpse into what The Tarot means to you. I would have loved to read a bit about that in each of the cards description. The inclusion of more esoteric symbolism within the tarot I would have really enjoyed, particularly in the minors and the court cards, after seeing them in the majors. And bringing up Esotericism briefly in the guidebook leads me to guess that it's an interest of yours and I would have loved to see more of that in the deck. It's definitely true that I would probably really enjoy your Heart's Eye and Mermaid's Purse oracles and will probably give them a go sometime soon! Thanks so much for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it and will be following your new work with interest! xx -Theia

    Tuckboxes wear out and look ragged-I prefer sturdier boxes. I often take the book not the cards along in the car to read when I am waiting to pick up my kids so I really like a full color pic of the card. However I agree it could be smaller but I do appreciate larger print. 😊

    Joining the chorus of "reduce, reuse, recycle"... while my Marketing background sees mass market publishers trying to compete with indie extravaganza!! (say that word as RuPaul for full effect). And packaging for more shelf space now that bookstore chains are building up their selection.

    • @GardenGoddessTarot
      @GardenGoddessTarot  Před 10 měsíci +1

      That's a good point, the need for more real-estate on bookstore shelves as decks make their way into more of a mainstream space is probably driving the shift in packaging for sure. Not sure I like the outcome of that at all though....

    Omg though the art! It’s probably the only diet I’d be able to do. Great review I went from a gut reaction of I must have this to mmmmm I’m going to wait and ponder. (I probably still will but it because I love it visually) you didn’t come across harsh at all just clear on some great points. For me the biggest pause is the lack of emotion and the sameness of the faces it’s the same reason I didn’t buy the wandering star tarot for a year! But I love it now I have it so I know that if I love the art I can make it all work ❤️❤️❤️

    I was just reading my Tarot Del Toro's guidebook today and it had a really unusual-for-me description of the threes: "Fruits. This tension [of the twos] is alleviated when a third element is generated." So maybe the growing potted plant is based on a reading tradition that is more based on the same things TDT is? I also like how you get contained, initial growth in the 3 and lush, tall overgrowth in the 7, but that said then there's not much to distinguish the 7 from the 9!
    I definitely don't think you were being nitpicky; as was later clear from the similarity between the 7 and the 8 I do think the deck has some issues and I found your critiques valuable and thoughtful! A tarot deck is more than just art and more than just symbols and some decks are really good at being one but not the other. You did a good job of showcasing the deck'a artistic strengths while being honest about its symbols' flaws.

  • @TheMuseSway
    @TheMuseSway Před 10 měsíci +4

    I love collecting decks but I'm not going to lie. I remember the tarot by the image and associate the meaning from the image and symbology. So when I see decks when it's literally like Seven Wands criss-crossing and nothing else I'm like....wtf. My brain has to take time to remember the Rider Waite image of Seven of Wands before the meaning of the card pops up. Those that have their images closely to Rider Waite is easier and faster to decipher. However, I'm also fine with cards that have art or symbology that will lead to the same conclusion of the meaning of the card. It may not be the same rider-wait depiction but if I see a cat looking at three fallen cat treats and two left of the side. I'm going to pretty much remember what the meaning of the card is. ( I also read cards intuitively as well but you know. )
    Other than that it is a lovely deck to look at.
    Also I'm fine with wands not screaming fire. I prefer my wands as an air element and and swords fire. Other than I pretty much keep the associations the same.

  • @johannasmk
    @johannasmk Před 10 měsíci +4

    I 100% agree on the packaging and book and the unnecessary waste they create, plus I don't want to pay extra for nice wrappings when the cards are the main thing! This is especially true when the deck is clearly RWS-based, you really don't need more than a LWB (if even that). But at the same time I understand why publishers are doing this, because based on reviews on CZcams or Facebook most tarot lovers seem to dislike tuck boxes and enjoy the Llewellyn-style kits. And I truly get that it can be an experience, but I just see an environmental waste happening and a storage problem for myself 😅.

    • @RoseHoneyRitual
      @RoseHoneyRitual Před 10 měsíci +2

      I genuinely wonder if they even like it or if people are just repeating things they’ve heard over the years in other reviews that make them assume it’s a sign of quality! Like “thick guidebook” okay it’s thick but have you even looked at it or read it because it probably isn’t good “beautiful big box” okay but you’re going to take it out of the box and put it in a bag aren’t you (not you them lol)

  • @FloraSprout

    I actually entirely disagree with the take that decks should just come in a tuckbox with a LWB. Sometimes it feels nice to have a product that feels more premium. I do agree that the guidebook doesn't take advantage of its real estate which is a shame, but don't think actual guidebooks are inherently an issue. I like having books with pictures. Sometimes I want to sit down with the book and have a look without having to drag 78 cards out and flip through them. Also often the images are blown up which is great for seeing additional detail in the art if you have poor eyesight like I do. I think US Games has been kind of throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks, trying to copy Llewellyn a little maybe. The Zodiac tarot is a great example, the packaging is baffling. I think there are some times when less is more but with tarot decks I want to feel like the price I pay is reflected in the presentation of the product. If people don't like the packaging...recycle it. We should all do what we can for the environment but I don't think tarot deck packaging is even a blip on the overall corporate and consumer wastefulness scale.

    • @FloraSprout
      @FloraSprout Před 10 měsíci +7

      Another thing- seeing a lot of comments that they don't like large packaging because it takes up too much room so they can't have as much in their collection. Like hmmm maybe unpack that a little. You want smaller boxes, smaller boxes so you can consume more? But are simultaneously saying that the packaging is a problem because it's wasteful? I personally care way way more about excess plastic. Plastic on the outside while the deck is also covered in plastic. To me that is more objectionable since that will long outlive us all.

    • @GardenGoddessTarot
      @GardenGoddessTarot  Před 10 měsíci +8

      I think what bothers me the most is 'not' that it's trying to look like a premium deck, but that the content within the book and deck doesn't reflect or stand up to the aesthetics of it. I don't think all decks should come in tuck boxes, although I'd probably love it if they did, but what I mean is that the contents of this deck (Including the book's information and depth of meaning intended by the creators) clearly lacks the necessity for the excess packaging/page count. A large book without the interesting contents to fill it is a hollow and lackluster experience and leaves one with a a feeling of wanting more. A direct reflection of the cycles of consumer culture, being promised something in the aesthetics and advertising but in hand delivering none of it. Left to keep searching for what was promised. I would much rather the price I pay be reflected in the content and quality of information and art a deck contains as opposed to the material packaging. But that's an entirely personal take and can understand why not everyone would agree. I want artists and creators paid what they deserve for their service, and manufacturing can have what's left. Artists and creators are getting paid less and less as demands for more 'luxe' presentation of their work increases. Demands for material flourishes, expensive packaging, gilding and lamination (while trying to keep Mass Market decks 'affordable') drastically shrinks the amount of earnings an artist has access to. To me that's not the spirit of Tarot. In a good deck, I will tolerate ANY and all packaging choices, because what I truly am after is the experience of working with the cards.
      I also refrain from commenting on the amount of decks someone has or wants to have because that is really none of my business and would make me look awfully foolish.
      I appreciate your comment and the opportunity to open up the space for conversation around these ideas. Talking about Tarot is a passion and pastime for me and once we get past the material quibbles and into the depth of ideas that the Tarot contains within it, that's where the real magic happens. I guess this one just makes it hard to talk about the depths because it enthusiastically skims the surface. xx -Theia
