    1:25 start
13:41 there is no such thing as direct experience; there's only ever interpreted experience
22:21 businesses are visions; money is just the means to the vision .. not the ends

    36:00 "spaceship earth" theory
    45:30 paradox of Wigner’s friend
A bold and all-embracing exploration of the nature and progress of knowledge from one of today's great thinkers.
Throughout history, mankind has struggled to understand life's mysteries, from the mundane to the seemingly miraculous.
Our guest is a multiple award-winning pioneer in the field of quantum computation and argues that explanations have a fundamental place in the universe. They have unlimited scope and power to cause change, and the quest to improve them is the basic regulating principle not only of science but of all successful human endeavour.
This stream of ever improving explanations has infinite reach. We are subject only to the laws of physics, and they impose no upper boundary to what we can eventually understand, control, and achieve.
He applies that worldview to a wide range of issues and unsolved problems, from creativity and free will to the origin and future of the human species.
We welcome David Deutsch, Fellow of the Royal Society, a pioneer in quantum computing, visiting Professor of physics at the Centre for Quantum Computation at Oxford University, multiple TED Talker, optimist and author of The Beginning of Infinity, Explanations That Transform the World.
    We discuss:
    What David calls good explanations.
Error as unavoidable in the growth of knowledge.
    Fallibilism
    Education
    Creativity
    Artificial Intelligence
The misconception that knowledge needs authority to be genuine or reliable
All scientific theories are testable conjectures
    Every explanation begins with conjecture
The growth of knowledge consists of correcting misconceptions in our theories
    The Principle of Mediocrity
    The Spaceship Earth metaphor
We touch very lightly on the Multiverse

5:06 "All rational thought is critical. It consists of conjecture and criticism. It does not consist of building up things. If knowledge consisted of building up from a secure foundation, then if there was anything wrong with the foundation, the rest of the structure might fall down at any moment. That's not how we should look at knowledge."

  • @El_Diablo_12

4:40 your starting point doesn’t matter fundamentally
7:00 there is no authoritative source fundamentally. Good and bad conjectures can come from anywhere
8:50 problem solving and criticism is essential to learning a concept
10:00, 11:40 all fields at their core involve the quest to find good explanations. ‘How can I best find and fix errors?’ that’s the right mindset
12:00 trying to create an error free system never does so. And will do even worse by entrenching errors
12:05 you shouldn’t coerce children, help them identify and correct errors. Recover from errors to. Help in their problem solving journey, don’t do it for them
29:00 explanatory understanding is necessary fit solving problems in physics. Mathematics alone is not enough
32:00 going to moon will be automated one day
36:00 the decoupling of humans from other animals
44:00 explaining the seen with the unseen, and Hugh Everett
47:50 every human being also has infinite reach, like a spark waiting to happen if they choose to
