    Casio, if you are listening just make these two models:
    1. Affordable: A 5600 with MIPS display
    2. Mid price (or higher price for a mostly resin watch depending on your point of view): A GW-5000u with combi bracelet and MIPS display.
    No new, non-timekeeping features required so no need to upgrade existing modules (except for the MIPS display obviously). Done. You’re welcome. :-)

    For a massive 5600 fan I find this just disappointing, all those bulky sensors and useless features make this a total NO from me.

  • @FuglyStick
    @FuglyStick Před rokem +64

    Yeah, I'll say it again - G Shock isn't ready to take on the fitness watch "Big Boys" at Garmin, etc. The G Shock product just doesn't measure up to those brands. What G Shock does well it does better than anyone else - the most durable, reliable watches on the market, bar none, at a price that makes them easily the best value for a watch. But their fitness watches are lacking. If you are in the market for a fitness watch, the G Shock is an inferior product.
    The GWM 5610 retails around $110 US. Give it a MIP display with all the same features, and charge $140-175 for it, and you have a winner.

    I have enjoyed wearing one for a couple of months now, its comfortable, including at night and the sensors are not that bad at all. Only gripe is the app is a bit lacking, the polar reporting is good, but I wish you could start an exercise from the app rather than just via the watch interface. Overall, if you are in the market for something a little different at a really good price point I couldn't recommend it enough.

  • @garrytuohy9267
    @garrytuohy9267 Před 11 měsíci +19

    I think tracking steps, heart rate and O2 level with solar charging is a sweet spot.
    A G-Shock is probably too big to sleep with for most, so it would be best to leaving the sleep monitoring to something less bulky.
    The real sports tracker fanatics will probably not be swayed away from Suunto. But for everyone else a basic tracker that can take a beating and doesn't need to be recharged every couple of days looks like a winner.
    While I love my MIP G-Shock, much of the text is getting too small for those of us who are affected by its nostalgia factor. So it would be great if they included a mode where the Steps, Heart rate, etc. was displayed as large as the time.

    I am very happy with this release and find it to be (at this point) the square I've indeed been waiting for.
    My first G-Shock was the 5600, which I liked a lot but wasn't my favorite. After some years I "upgraded" to the 6600, which still is my favorite G-Shock of all time - I like them simple.
    As time passed, I became more interested in watches and went through a few models from a few different brands. But that phase passed and I came back to my trusty 6600, which I rarely get off my wrist for a different watch, depending on the occasion.
    With the birth of fitness bands and watches, I found the functionalities useful - more as a motivational factor, as I'm getting older and movement became more and more important in my day to day life - but didn't really want to switch my 6600 for a smart watch and also found it a bit odd to wear a watch on one wrist and a fitness band on the other.
    So, for me, this is really great news. I loved the idea when the GBD200 was released, but didn't love the design.
    But I like the 5600 a lot, so I will definitely get the H5600 and really hope that one day (although I don't really think it will happen, since it hasn't had the same success as the 6900) a H6600 will be released. Fingers crossed!

    I fear we won't be getting a pure tough solar G-Shock with MIP display anytime soon. It's like Casio, with this model, tries to accomodate those of us who's been screaming for a square with MIP, but had to add fitness features to justify the watch needs regular recharging. The display technology simply uses too much power to work on solar alone. At least that's what I take away from this, I really doubt Casio thought they could take on the big guys in the fitness market with the DW-H5600.

    • @tydshiin5783
      @tydshiin5783 Před rokem

      Nah they def were trying to appeal the market with a fitness one as it's been what most folks have demanded
      It's already impressive on its own that it takes 10-11 months to complete die from 0 light or charge when my regular solar square(No Multiband 6) would've died at 7-8 months
      But it's kinda silly that they could not incorporate Tough Solar into the damn thing(Might probably be too much depth that they were not gonna let the MIP sit under)
      Also I do absolutely despise how much the sensors poke out, wish it wasn't so bulbous

    • @lindenhoch8396
      @lindenhoch8396 Před rokem +1

      @@tydshiin5783 I doubt that. Casio already knows what features a fitness watch needs, they even have several models that demonstrates that. The tiny, recessed buttons of the square models definitely isn't one of those features. Neither is an intricate menu system to select functions. And as you mention yourself, the lack of ergonomics with the bulbous sensor. If this is meant to be a fitness model, someone clearly has failed. The only thing I've heard 5600 fans demand of the perfect square, including myself, is the MIP display and tough solar, and so far every model Casio has launched with that needs recharging or has a 2-year battery lifespan.

    Took it back. I still use my previous one which I bought for 200 euros at an airport. It is solar-powered. It is also a Bluetooth version and it comes with a metal strap adjusted perfectly to fit my small wrist.
    Believe me, you don't need anything else. This upgrade is a gimmick to corner the market.
    You need to charge the battery, you say..?
    Forget that!
    Neve had an issue with my version.
    And it comes in black!

    Saw this one today in local store, was searching for something thinner than my GWF-1000. I was stunned by this display. I knew it's good and legible, but after seeing it with my own eyes I am jealous AF now.
    Man, it's just another dimension, viewing angles and legibility are ridiculous. Holy cow, holy bull, amazing readability, superior contrast, wow.
    But, surprisingly, this thing is almost as thick as my Frog. Thanks to that sensor, it's 17.5mm THICC. That's a lot for a square one.
    Soft rubber band is also very comfortable. Feels pretty nice, but it's just way too thick. Also not sure if all those fitness features are really needed, cycling through menu took longer than I anticipated.
    Overall, kinda controversial watch. Really nice display, but it's thick on your wrist and costs more than your average beater, for such price there are watches like GW-5000(U) or GWM-5000 that have screwbacks and are just way more reliable and 'g-shocky' than this one. But this display is like future is here.
    Something like GW-5000(U) with such MIP display would be THE top seller and one of the best G, that's for sure. They really need to make more models with that fancy display. I would love my GWF-1000 to have such readability. But it feels like Casio just doesn't want us to have the perfect G, because if you just buy perfect one, you won't buy others, right? Feels_sad_man.
    P.S. did I tell that this display is just beyond cool? Damn.

    I'll be sticking with the GBD 200 for now. For me the sensors that jam into the wrist is a deal breaker. And also that the extra features are only usable if you constantly charge it which is a pain - and the watch will only last a few years because the battery can't be replaced. But I would totally spend 300ish for sleep tracking if it was comfortable and had a replaceable battery that didn't need charging (like the GBD 200 but with sleep tracking). There are watches on the market that will do 6-12 months with sleep tracking on a button battery - so it is possible - but they are lower quality than Casio and don't have timers etc. So I might end up getting a bedside device for sleep tracking instead. But I've not found one that fits my needs yet. And the Android apps that I tried have been pretty poor.

    Instead of tightening up and making the square a little smaller Casio decides to make it even bigger! And then proceeds to add a load of functions few are interested.
    Keep the MIP, reduce the size substantially, give us back PROPER battery life by eliminating all those non-watch functions.
    If MIP won't allow proper battery develop e-ink displays or something.
    A GM-S5600 with MIP or similar would be great, small but legible.

    So ‘solar assisted’ doesn’t mean that it can remain charged exclusively via solar / light?

  • @brunocraighero2460

    It leaves a wonderful puppy paw mark on the wrist, plus, it's f***ing thick. The Casio GBD200 comes with some of his functions, the mip display, a better blue color and a better shape. For a lower price. And you can use apps like GadgetBridge instead of the crappy Casio app to connect it to the phone.
    Really, this one is a cheeseburger on a strap sitting on the wrist!

    I have one and I'm quite happy with it but I didn't buy it as a fitness tracker. No issues with monitor buldge on the back. I thought I would hate that bump but can't really feel it.

      I find that the additional height affords it more wrist presence, and that was the clincher for me. Frustrating little thing but glad I got one.

    How accurate is the sleep tracker? I suspect that I have sleep apnea and want a watch with a REALLY accurate sleep tracking feature. Also, what battery life could be expected if all other fitness/health features are disabled? Could it entirely rely on its solar cell? I want a watch that is self sustaining, that I can just slap on my wrist and know that it will "take care of itself", but I also need a (reliable) sleep tracker, and I think this G-shock is as close to my needs as possible, but I'm not sure how reliable it is

    I have the GBD-H2000. I love it so much, I’m somewhere between like you are when it comes to these. I’m not a fitness fanatic but like the odd feature for walking and riding. I love G-Shock and wanted this 5600 so bad when I saw it announced but that sensor on the back looks like it may be a bit uncomfortable especially in the summer. I think for now I’ll stick with the H2000 which has all of the features the 5600 has and many more plus is surprisingly super comfortable. Cool video man, cheers.

    I just picked one of these up at the G Shock London store for £183 (vs. original list price of £269). At this price, it is a bona fide bargain. Great looking watch, the display is incredibly sharp (better than the GBX or GBD models), you can turn off all the fitness functions so it behaves like a "normal" G Shock and it will last 11 months between charges...but if you do want to measure heart rate, VO2 max or your see how you performed in your Parkrun...you can. So if you can snag one of these at a discount, you can get the watch you want "without all the fitness stuff", you just have to switch those functions off.
    I also recently bought the GCW B5000, and if they had put a MIP display into that watch, it would have been beyond perfect (it is kinda perfect as is, even with the legacy module).

    So I wonder why they have the “Solar Powered” functionality, which is really just a power assist. It’s not the same as “Tough Solar” which fully powers the watch. So you still have to attach it to an external charger, which stinks.

    For those that think the features are useless, I'd argue that the features are quite addictive. I found I was wearing my Garmin Fenix as a daily watch because I loved tracking my sleep, heart rate, my movements on a map, etc. This new G-shock will appeal to data nerds and you won't know if that's you till you try it.
