Apparently to some departments (particularly Nassau county in Long Island, NY in my experience) using your constitutional rights and not speaking to a detective without an attorney present is a form of "disrespect" I was arrested during a traffic stop two years ago for window tint that isn't even that dark (I also have a medical exemption for my psoriasis because New Yorks regulations on tint is pretty unreasonable) They didn't read me my rights and I wasn't going to incriminate myself over something so meaningless. They'll try to intimidate you if you use your rights to defend yourself. That's another result of toxic police subculture. The "I am the law, obey me or else" mindset.

But he also asked if those officers had a "happy ending" were they promoted, did they stay on the force for a long time ect, and he said he's yet to hear a happy ending for any cop who blows the whistle on this type of behavior. In 2018, Kwiatkowski was sentenced to four months in federal prison for a 2009 incident in which he used "unlawful and unreasonable force" against four black teenagers, including slamming their heads into a car. Ward said knowledge was not made available during "the original determinations in this case by both the hearing officer and this court."
Chauvin also has used this fatal choke hold before, so it's not only that it should never be used and was, but these cops might start by getting away with more minor abuses of power until they get really comfortable with the fact no one is going to stop them.

Dr. Grande did pretty good on this except for the disrespect. I'm a former correction officer so I will give my input. Now I do need to say that my particular view is from corrections and I am dealing with inmates who will see me every day, which might make it a bit different. So to put up with disrespect is a sign of weakness. It doesn't matter who is disrespectful. Inmate, CO, or supervisor. Once you are considered weak, you are in danger. No one will trust you, and no one will have your back. I remember when I had been moved to a different unit and was being tested by inmates. Other officers will watch it play out because they want you tested too. So I was telling a family member about it and it scared them and they said please don't make them mad, you could get hurt. I'm in more danger from being viewed as weak than making them mad. I loved being a correction officer. I have a degree in social work and had been a social worker before correction officer so I was a damn good officer. I would occasionally run into former inmates and they would come say hello and talk to me. I loved seeing them get out and do well. My issues with the job mostly had to do with administration. The fact that I managed to do my job and deal with inmates well meant that I would have to deal with shit from other officers when I would change shifts or units. A popular phrase was "if you're pissing off inmates it means your doing your job". I think you can do the job without constantly pissing people off.

They have all the training in the world. Tactically at least. I wish that were the problem. But it's not, it's in their culture. Sending them to untold numbers of "racial sensitivity" classes will not help. Some training on the law might be beneficial, but only if we strip qualified immunity first, because the root cause is their culture, and they STILL wont be interested in enforcing, or obeying the law, even if they know it. And every time someone lets them blame training, or funding(they are so over funded, and over payed, if the average citizen had any idea they would be sick), or even racism, they are only allowing them to continue business as usual indefinitely. It is the exact same scapegoat they have been pushing for 80 years.

Not even to mention the social damage done by enforcing nonviolent drug laws, how many have people had their lives ruined after committing low harm or victimless crimes? Not saying police don’t fulfill some important social duties, but could those not be done better and safer by others? Careful - Grande doesn't ever do an in depth look into the facts. It's almost like he reads a CNN article and then bases his video off it.

The part where you talked about Police fearing disrespect and wanting to show force just made it click in my mind that sometimes the police behave like a gang.

Indifference to human lif costs him his own life. Even a little girl felt compassion of the murder that took someone's life. She knew it was wrong. Even the other police officer had the chance to take action, and they didn't.
    Thank you, Dr. Grande.
