- During this year's Game Developers Conference [GDC], key folks from Insomniac Games held a couple of presentations on Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
During the design post-mortem, we learned some interesting details about the process of creating Rivet. Let's have a look!

You shouldn't believe what this Sam Maggs person says, not only she turns out to be a liar(claiming they didnt give her credit while not giving credit to the one who actually suggest the name "Rivet"), she also harassed the devs team everytime they mention her name.
Anyway, i really hope Beast master Rivet idea still being used for later games, also i believe that with Rivet fully introduced in Rift Apart we will actually switch between Ratchet and Rivet, and maybe used for some co-op mode idea.
I had read that she was an awful person overral and her behaviour were making everyone else in the room feel uncomfortable. No wonder she is not working there anymore. How can you trust a person who lied about coming up with Rivet's name? (other employee got an idea, not Sam Maggs)
As mentioned, lots of mixed feelings and responses when folks stumbled on her thread. In the end, IG should confirm Rivet's background. Beastmaker could be used for another Lombax, why not :D
If they were to make another Co-Op game, Hopefully they could make something that improves on Full Frontal Assault on PS3, but Jim Ryan wouldn't want that. He wants more theatrics and profits, not more fun.
@@X2011racer I mean full frontal assault wasn't "fun" to begin with. It was contrived and shoe horned into existing because Sony suits wanted insomniac to include multiplayer in tools and a crack in time.

No. The creator was NOT erased. She was hated in the development group she did NO contributes to working on Rivet. In fact she BARELY makes any work on RIVET. She did not git erased. She was KICKED OFF for being RUDE and shouting “LOMBAX TIDDIES” in the BUSINESS MEETING.
Despite having NO development with Rivet she tries to pull a petty JKR just because she was upset that she was kicked off for being INSUFFERABLE.
In other words, she got kicked off the team for an ENTIRE YEAR for harassing the staff she BARELY did anything with Rivet.
And again, I must say this,
due to that salt, the “creator” pulled a JK ROWLING card onto Rivet’s sexuality ONLY TO USE IT AGAINST THE PEOPLE WHO KICKED HER OUT OUT OF SPITE. It was so freakin’ petty that she @ at a Ratchet and Clank WIKIPEDIA on twitter. The AUDACITY of this women to change the canon of the character despite having NO RELATIONS with the character is astounding.
Don’t fall for that JK ROWLING card she just used.
Sorry if I got heated. It’s just this individual has a “history” that you see her often get panned by everyone else.
That is such and asshole move to do, no wonder why she got kicked out. I hope she never contributes in the video game business ever. I hope this message gets to more people so people can see the truth about how horrible she was.

This whole Sam Maggs debacle is just a mess.
It's as if she said what she did with the express purpose of dividing the fanbase. It just makes it even harder to believe anything she says.
I don't know if this is true? I hope it is (because I think rivet being lesbian A does not work B would fuck up her character)
And if not I want to explain why rivet being lesbian does not work(before people try to kill me let me explain)
1. She says rivet is lesbian after the game came out and in the game nothing even comes close to hinting rivet is lesbian if anything many people point out she seems to googly eye ratchet
2. If she was meant to be lesbian from the get go fine but nothing hints at it so if Insomniac want her to be lesbian they would basically be pushing themselves into more of a corner
than they have right now (should ratchet date rivet or tyween) the corner is 60 to 70% percent of the fan base ship these 2
so making her lesbian would be saying fuck you to a large majority of the fanbase( i know its there story they may do what they wish but based on what they showed with ratchet and rivets interaction this move would be stupid to make)
3. If they want to make her lesbian because they think she should be a lesbian NOW and not THEN its a very good way to fuck up a character because nothing is shown they would be changing her for no reason

Rivet is a very cool character and a very welcoming addition to the franchise. She didn't felt forced (to me, at least) and she had her own traits that made her more unique and not just the "ratchet counterpart". But I WILL say I wished the gameplay with her was more different from Ratchet, because they pretty much play the same. Would be neat if Ratchet gameplay style was more about dodging and quick steps and Rivet was more about brute force and tanking damage. Just an idea :) Either way, looking forward to what else she and Kit brings to the franchise, in the future.
(Also, about the Twitter Thread, yeah I'm also gonna wait until Insomniac confirms anything, before taking that extra background information as canon).

Pretty much this. And the fact she mentioned ''team'' all the time, this is a team decision. IG should really be the one to confirm this.
Exactly it doesn't and i hate that It took a heated argument just to make rivet like why make a huge deal over a design of a character insomniac has every right and ownership to the characters they make and even thou she worked for them and she got retired or whatever the case was which she had a meltdown basically over a design of rivet doesn't justify what she did for the game itself and the community its disgusting and insomniac deserved better respect for their game development.

Im starting to realize how much work goes into coming up with a character, let alone designing them, then fitting them into the story, then making the story flow, then making it a playable game, all without ruining the already existing lore. Jeez.
I hope the next Ratchet and Clank game is where Ratchet, Clank, Rivet and Kit find the other Lombaxes
too bad they might pull another cockblock no jutsu on us and bring back tachyon or something i mean how long has it been 12-13 years? the only little image we have of the lombax dimension is literally a small circle with low res 2d skyscrapers that Vaguely have fastoon architecture. i honestly hope they finally conclude that story thread so ratchet can go to even greater heights not shackled by a heavy cliffhanger.

I usually don't keep up with GDC related stuff, unless I'm doing research for a specific video. But I always find these bits of behind-the-scenes info pretty interesting regardless.
But...the part about that one comment by Sam Maggs. I have to agree, Insomniac should be the ones to confirm such things, not someone who left the project after working on it for a year & a half. But even then, I don't think IG would, because that's not the vibe I got whenever Rivet & Ratchet were around each other, both in-game & in the credits. I've been radio silent on the whole subject, for good reason. And that's all I'm gonna say on the matter.

Honestly even if Insomniac confirmed it, I still wouldn’t believe it, XD. For example, I never accepted that Ratchet and Talwyn are more than just really good friends, despite statements to the contrary. I go by game evidence.
But at the end of the day, this is a series made for everyone, kids and adults alike, and it’s not what the series is about.

Well, Getting 'close range' and 'long range' buffs for Rivet and Ratchet Respectively would at least differentiate them, a bit.
In the end, I still enjoy Rivet and Ratchet. Would ship them, regardless.

You know, that actually might explain why there are random beasts seen around Savali, just never made any sense to me to put them there since they're not enemies but they're not interactable in any way besides being able to whack them, maybe they did plan for them to be your one way of navigating the plains but they decided to just put the Hoverboots in it's place.

It’s cool how they took a lot of unique concepts for the franchise and used them to flesh out individual planets it added a lot of variety to the gameplay.

True, the gameplay between Ratchet and Rivet should change up in the next game, not that I'm with the group that said, she felt more like a re-skin of Ratchet, nah, but I do agree the gameplay styles should change.
Like make Ratchet a agility type character and Rivet a heavy type or just something to set them apart from each other. =P

I prefer an Alister and Kaden backstory more, I ain't askin' for a new game but if they do another one, that would be one that would come to mind, understandin' their story, how they lived before Tachyon killed Ratchet's parents and attacks his race, and what lead to Ratchet's upbringin' on Veldin, also it was confirmed by Alister that Ratchet's dad is dead as he said in the final boss "It's a good thing your father isn't alive to see this, a coward, traitor, he would've been so ashamed".
Same. Alister and Kaden must have had a fun friendship where they did a lot of daredevil stuff together, but then slowly began to drift apart due to their disagreements about this "mysterious inventor."
If I recall correctly, ex-writer TJ Fixman had the idea a ''prequel'' novelization. Kaden and Azimuth's adventures on Fastoon.
That would've been great to delve into, their backstory as characters and Ratchet's family history.

Yeah, Insominac games should be the ones deciding what is and what should not be cannon in the game. I think sam maggs said that extra non cannon ''fact'' outta anger.
Edit: Okay she did it because she got kicked out from insomniac for harrasing the staff working there, so it was outta anger, thus making it an obvious non cannon fact.
I'm calling it, in the next R&C game, I think Insomniac are going to hook Ratchet and Rivet up because the fans do like the ship and also out of spite against Maggs.

@@Salykkj I agree with you completely, but if I have to be honest it's not uncommon for entertainment companies giving fans what they want, also the game feels like they are trying to set up a Ratchet and Rivet relationship with Rivet seemingly interested in Ratchet, but it's as you said it's up to Insomniac to go that route
I was so happy she wasn't a mary sue. Though the whole nature thing could have be interesting to make them both unique but I'm still happy with what we got
It's nice to still be getting Rift Apart facts months after Rift Apart has been out, especially how Rivet became the character she is today.

You know I gotta be honest with you, I really like how Jiminy cricket appeared in quite a few scenes in kh3. Because compared to kh2, he really only appeared after sora and the others woke up, as well as in final mix after sora gets his new outfit and they see the star on the floor. Like jiminy really did try to give context to things in kh3. Especially when sora was chasing after the hearts of his lost friends in the keyblade graveyard. You get what I mean at all?
Rivet is one of the few new female characters whose introduction to a series, any media past 2010, felt really natural and seamless to me. You don't need to defile it with sexuality crap...
That last bit just doesn't seem logically line up, with what was shown "on screen" & that's when both Rivet & Ratchet met face to face for the first time there wasn't only just a spark there was a whole fireworks worth of chemistry exploding between the two.
[plus since she left the company before the project was officially completed Insomniac probably just decided to change it last minute]
@Marav Reviews There's also the fact that Ratchet is the first ever Lombax that Rivet has ever seen & it's the same with Ratchet meeting Rivet, when they both are the only Lobax's in their own respectable Universes that's gone their whole lives without ever seeing another Lombax that's only just gained access to the ability to travel through the Multiverse for the first time the first thing they're gonna understandably wonna try to do is to repopulate with the first Lombax they meet regardless of their own sexual orientation.. XD

If we wanna make it 18+ Lombaxes or not I’d say both characters are capable of sexually satisfying themselves to the point that fucking wouldn’t be the first things on their minds when finally accomplishing their lifelong goals of making contact with other members of their species and finding “home”

While I love Rivet's final design, I can only wonder what the devs original vision was for her before Maggs convinced them to alter the design.
I'm hoping the next game will answer a lot of our questions about Rivet's character. I hope she's a keeper in the franchise. I really enjoyed her in Rift Apart
From what I've heard from other members' interviews, she was supposed to have a design more along the lines of "Ratchet but with boobs". But after seeing the extensive concept work for Rivet I have my doubts as to the validity of that statement. Either way, it didn't stop the internet.

That would awesome to see to be honest, I already got a few good ideas:
What if Ratchet and Clank never meet but Rivet and Kit did (earlier of course).
What if the Fiendish Five killed Sly Cooper instead of Conner Cooper (Sly's dad).
What if Jak fell into the dark eco instead of Daxter.

In the end, in this case I wouldn't mind much. Because she already acts like a tomboy, and has skills and interests that are not typically feminine. And since Ratchet already has a girlfriend (one would even say several), it would actually serve to... uncomplicate matters :)

@@Mailed-Knight The wording wasn't very sensitive, but it's not a crazy assumption to make. Her creator/designer at least had her being LGBT in mind when creating her. When the whole "female lombaxes don't have tails" argument was still everywhere, there was a Twitter thread where the creator/designer basically hinted at her being transgender, but it was more of playful than serious

True, at the end of day, it's ultimately up to insomniac games to confirm what's is and what is not canon to the series.
At this point, the fan base does not need a division centered around magg's comments, especially, if everything was said in bitterness and hurt feelings, then I can't tell whether you're actually stating something true or you're just trying to use something, to falsely say something, bad about the team.
We gotta move on from this.
Thankfully a lot of people have already moved on, and those who actually believed Maggs are a small minority

Those alternate names for Rivet I think are gonna be saved for later. I wouldn't say for other Lombaxes, but exclusive to Ratchet dimensional counterparts. I think the tool-based names are reserved for them because notice how normal Lombaxes have regular names - Angela, Azimuth, Kaden, etc. I dont think she's going to be the only counterpart we see. There could be an Anti-Ratchet out there too that is being saved for the main antagonist of the next game. It makes sense too that theres one that was successful at being a hero & now wants to interact with the Lombaxes (Ratchet); one failed numerous times but redeemed herself later & now considers seeing the Lombaxes too (Rivet); while the other took a corrupt path by manipulating others around him causing destruction across his dimension & is now trying to take over the Lombax empire (Socket).
To be honest all of this is cool and all but I'm kind of disappointed that the Lombaxes are not one dimensional and that there's multiple of them and their counterparts across the dimensions
I've always imagined a Lombax going corrupt. That could be an interesting storyline.
Thing is, Lombaxes don't have dimensional counterparts. They are the only species in the galaxy that lacks a counterpart of each individual. Ratchet and Rivet are counterparts in the sense that they both serve as the "Hero Lombax" of the dimensions that they live in, but they aren't the same person. They did not originate from the dimensions that they live in. All Lombaxes come from one singular dimension which was invaded by the Cragmites, and so 90% of the Lombaxes fled to another dimension, while others fled to additional dimensions leading to them being scattered all over. Ratchet was sent to his dimension by Kaden. Rivet was presumably sent by her parents or others. The Lorbs of Savali make it pretty clear Lombaxes are a one of a kind species lacking counterparts ( Otherwise why could'nt they just call their counterpart bretheren to assist in fending off the Cragmites? Why are the Lombaxes considered to be one of the rarest races in the universe? ) So there may very well be other "Lombax Heros" or even Villians living in additional dimensions. However these Lombaxes all came from the same dimension, so none of them are the same person. Ratchet, Rivet, "Socket" and whoever else are all unique individuals that came from the same place ( with NO counterparts )

Maybe I should've elaborated a little more, but I figured everyone would've gotten the point quick. I was saying it narrative-wise. I mean Kit's existence in Rivet's dimension makes it so obvious for the narrative. Since the narrative is that Rivet is a Ratchet-like Lombax with her robotic partner that is Kit. A lot of contradictions with this dimensional lore, especially when you implement characters like Emperor Nefarious & Quantum just to deepen the hole.
Ah right. I will say it may seem like each Lombax Hero ( or villian ) that ends up in another dimension may very well have their own "Clank" to team up with. That's all
just hope next game is longer than rift apart more planets like 29 example
Looking at the list of skills. Dude. You could do all of that plant based. Magetic stuff used as suction cups or slime gloves. All of that could get upgrades and as she found new plants and creatures advance. Mid air traversal. Dude. Vine creatures on her wrist. That shoots vines. How hard is that?

Rivet was maybe googly eye, or...she was nervous. Afterall, she hadn't seen another Lombax in who knows how long, if ever even.

or not but I also agree she has not seen a lombax at all so her reaction being lovey or not lovey make sense

I want to say thank you to Insomniac for creating Rivet. I really loved the scene that Rivet play hard to get with Ratchet. So I liked that relationship and I thought it would be nice if Rivet love Ratchet.. I actually expected such a sweet relationship to continue in next game. I respect minority rights. But Rivet is the character I love, so this forced setting of the story feels so harsh to me. It's so sad.
Even if it doesn't lead to romance, Rivet's relationship with Ratchet is a very attractive point. I really like this point, but I am very worried that it will be ruined by a writer's tweet...
To be honest, there are many fanfics on Twitter that deal with the relationship between Ratchet and Rivet called 'Rivchet'. These people must have been very shocked by Sam's tweet. I hope that insomniac will carefully make the next work considering these fans' positions...

She got mad at Insomniac Games for supposedly not properly crediting her for Rivet's creation on twitter. She also included multiple other tweets revealing that she had rage fits in the office when the topic including more femine features on Rivet came up.
I take it the nervous factor was due to Rivet not being too familiar with her own kind.

Instantly would have become my favorite. I'm a little late, sure, but when I replay the classic trilogy, I have such a blast with the stretchy, fluid movement and I love incorporating wrench attacks into my gameplay. I do sideflips all the time, and then hyperstrikes, and I throw the wrench to hit a bunch of enemies, it's fantastic. In RA, I almost never used the wrench, save for certain instances when I run out of ammo and forget which of my d-pad buttons is the shotgun weapon that I put there, or there's like one small enemy and I didn't want to use my maxed Burst Pistol. It's honestly jarring, the wrench feels lame to use in these modern games, but the older ones felt great, probably because of the gameplay style being less about aiming vertically and more on platforming eloquently and using the right weapon for the job, aim being less important because of auto aim.
Plus, they nerfed the wrench throw in the newer games, it doesn't go through enemies anymore, and, more recently, stays in the air for longer, leaving you vulnerable.

When it comes to confirmed details about characters, from outside the media they're from after or just before its released, is an example of "death of the author."
It's a writing term that has been used most notably when thinking of writers like J.K. Rowling - before the transphobia. She tried to retroactively change certain details of characters that weren't there in the media, or just completely contradicting her own words, such as with Hermione said to being black but described as pasty white in the literal books.
I don't mind if Rivet IS a lesbian, in the end, but I do mind that someone is trying to pander to a community without having any impact on the final story or at least side content.

I’m sorry but at 6:35, no just NO, that’s literally reaching the JK Rowling stage on twitter, where even though she might be 1 one the EX writers doesn’t mean she can start putting in after the fact canon to the story/character without the new TEAMS consent on the matter, I don’t think I’d put any one’s word’s any higher if they think spouting loose canon facts on twitter of all places is a good idea especially if that said writer is saying it’s the ONLY reason their personally affiliated and attached with said interpretation trait with the character.

They didnt want to make a gender swap ratchet, which was rivets concept of existing in the first place. She was created to be rule 63 ratchet. These devs dont seem to know what they are taking about.
If Insomniac really did just want Rivet to be female Ratchet, they wouldn't have given her a unique backstory and personality, that differs from Ratchet's in a lot of aspects

Anyway, the comics are supposed to be an expansion on what happens in the games, yes the comics are canon, but the comics should be building off of the games, not the other way around. But it's been quite some time, and her complete abscense in Rift Apart and the sudden appearance of Rivet definitely tells me Insomniac is trying to ditch Talwyn in the near future.

Yeah, canon wasn’t the right word for someone who no longer works at Insomniac to use. Besides, canon is in the eyes of the owner. Disney bought Star Wars and all of the sudden what used to be canon no longer was.

Sam Maggs left Insomniac 5 months before Rift Apart's release. That was more than enough time to make huge changes to the story. She no longer has a say in what's canon and what's not in R&C. Based on what we get in the final game, Rivet is definitely straight and even has a thing for Ratchet!

At this point I'm not sure, though a romance between Ratchet & Rivet could work with more games to come given their interactions with each other are the most unique when compared with their interactions with every other character.
Insomniac Games have once stated (I don't remember where) that Talwyn is Ratchet's girlfriend, only they've never had a single romantice moment in any of the games unless you could the hug they share in Into the Nexus.

You know I gotta be honest with you, I really like how Jiminy cricket appeared in quite a few scenes in kh3. Because compared to kh2, he really only appeared after sora and the others woke up, as well as in final mix after sora gets his new outfit and they see the star on the floor. Like jiminy really did try to give context to things in kh3. Especially when sora was chasing after the hearts of his lost friends in the keyblade graveyard. You get what I mean at all?
