    Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart is a good game, much better than the reboot from four years ago, but it still has some glaring issues related to characters, story, humour and depth. In this video, I discuss the problems with Rift Apart, compare it to previous Ratchet and Clank titles, and attempt to find out why Rift Apart does not stand up to the greatness of the first games.

      Can you please stop bashing the first game and the second game just because they’re brand new reboot they kept a lot of things the same but ratchet and clank ripped apart it anybody who’s new to this series is like what’s going on what’s happening because their idea of the departure or from the reboot series which confuses everything heavily end to it isn’t easy creating a game they got most parts right but they’re going to get some parts wrong of course but all you do is bash on it

      Excuse me? What do you even mean, I won’t even acknowledge that there are people that believe this is the best Ratchet game? When did I EVER say that? This is a good game, by far not the best for me, but I’m sure there are tons who think this is the best, and I’m sure they have legitimate reasons for thinking that way. I hate the lack of variety in this game. There's no hacking puzzles, no disguise segments, no space combat, no races, and no Giant Clank. Even open world swimming levels would've been great. There's not even any co-op segments with Ratchet & Clank and Rivet & Kit. Small things like that really help video games like this. And can we please stop recycling the same weapons with the same upgrades from previous games? It's getting old.

    My main gripe with this game is the enemy variety. Sure, from a plot point with the dimensional rifts it makes sense to just have a mashup of enemies from previous planets and from Nefarious' army, but you face almost THE EXACT SAME ENEMIES ON EVERY SINGLE PLANET in this game... What made the original R&C so great was the variety in scenery, enemies, layout and music on each planet - that is mostly gone in this game, although it has some stunning scenery to be fair.

But these are still some of the most well made platformers next to Mario. The series really hasn't been "edgy" since PS3. Tools of destruction was very pixar like. This is the problem with nostalgia. @Mr Z I feel ya man, Most of what I see on youtube seems to be nothing but praise from new comers to the series about the graphics and introduction of Rivet. While Rivet isn't necessarily a bad character, I didn't appreciate Ratchet being side lined in his own game and Ratchet and Clank being split up from the word go sucked too. All in all the narrative of this game really felt like it was Rivets story and everyone else was just side kicks there to help her be the hero of her dimension. Rivet wasn't a terrible idea to introduce but I don't like how it was executed. And I don't know about anyone else but I myself am over being blue balled on the story arc of the lombax's. We get games 4-5 years apart and each game the lost race of lombax's are mentioned yet every game that arc goes nowhere. They make it sound as if a sequel will explore that arc with Rivet & Ratchet finding them but I doubt it at this point.

      Yes. I miss Lawrence. Also, Nefarious just… I literally feel bad for him in this game. He gets completel c*cked by Emperor Nefarious for the lack of a better word, and how he bullies Dr around is literally making me feel bad for him lol. He’s just so dimished. IF THEY WERE CLEVER, they could’ve made a long epic game were Ratchet and the gang actually allied with Dr Nefarious to take down the Emperor, somehow turning Nefarious and this being his last game as a villain. Idk, anything than this would’ve been better.

    • @TerrorOfTalos
      @TerrorOfTalos Před 3 lety +4

      Gtfo his goal ever since ACiT was to just win and ever since A4O he obviously has been trying to better himself as you can see by fixing the damage ratchet did to his face (although there is still a faint scar) and the soap opera radio glitch but it obviously wasn't enough for him so winning was the last thing he wanted to feel satisfied and since dealing with the emperor he's learned from this giving him more development, it's simple but well executed.

    • @jeffreyyou6110
      @jeffreyyou6110 Před 3 lety +8

      @@TerrorOfTalos his goal in acit had one layer of depth above winning and that's in how he wanted to win. he wanted to gain control of the clock and I feel like that made it a lot more interesting. in rift apart it feels like yeah his goal is winning but the dimensionator just kinda comes to him with no hassle. if they brought back something akin to the biobliterator it would have been way better because it's a much more concrete goal than just vaguely "winning". also, all of that character development you mentioned happened off screen. I won't deny that does sound like nice development but it's something we never see and showing any of that would have helped make his character more fleshed out in this game because as it is nefarious just kinda hangs around until he gets beaten in the middle

      @@jeffreyyou6110 There's a cutscene with him and the emperor and in it the emperor feels empty after finally taking over his galaxy and nefarious says something along the lines of "you equated happiness with success and now that you've achieved it life is meaningless" and throughout the game there's little glimpses of regret such as when the emperor announces his plan to take over Nefarious' dimension he's shocked. It's pretty clear even nefarious never wanted to take it this far and has at least some level regret about his actions.
      Also in one of the last scenes his whole personal deal about winning is recognized as he's the one that kicks the emperors hand off the ledge so there's payoff too as in this case he's on the winning team.

      @kimmikat4205 Před 3 lety +3

      actually IF THEY WERE CLEVER nefarious realizes what could've been if he took over the galaxy seeing emperor he would be a threat but life is meaningless to him and there's nothing left to do, and maybe if the game was longer he'd see how much of a pushover he is and steps up to him, and try to take him down with ratchet and clank and retire from evil. i also think qwark should've had more stuff to do with that "dark mirror" thing they were talking about maybe qwark would've saw that even tho captain quantum is a leader he is really scared and whiny which qwark sees and tries to make him and quantum the heroes the galaxy needs. that "dark mirror" of other old characters was a goddamn letdown

    I feel like my overall problem with this game is the fact that it feels empty in many areas, especially with the story. The characters in the game don't have much development. Ratchet has more development with Kit than Rivet does, and hes kind of sidelined throughout the game. It seemed like things were happening WAY to fast and they dont develop in natural way. Rivet and Kit are thrown together and their team up doesnt feel natural or earned, its forced at most.
    Also Ratchet and Rivet arent even on screen much together, they hardly talk to each other or develop, they dont talk about their past, they dont talk about their struggles or really do much to help each other out. Their kind of just there because the game said so. The Story just felt so empty in many areas.

    In my opinion the biggest missed opportunity and wasted potential was the big bad himself. Emperor Nefarious. He was teased throughout the game, and I was expecting the other half was going to be about stopping him. But the issue was that he was revealed in too late. By the time Emperor Nefarious showed up, you're technically almost at the last quarter of the game. What's also worse is how little he is shown after his reveal. Don't get me wrong, every scene with him was a delight. But there was only like 4 or 3 cutscenes with him being shown. I feel like they could of done so much more with him. To not only show that he is goofy and charismatic but also a big threat. Heck they could of shown already taking over other galaxies besides Ratchets.

    I just finished it and I totally agree. The biggest thing disappointed me is what wasn’t there. Such as the giant robot battles, spaceship combat, your own spaceship not Dr. nefarious.. and most definitely backtracking every ratchet and clank game had you go get a gadget and then that lets you go back to planet to proceed or find some sort of secret. You can pretty much get every single thing on your first walk-through if you know where it is. There’s only a handful that are blocked by story elements not by gadget. To me if I was gonna ranked the game it’s a 8. Which is sad because everything else I felt was pretty good just needed more.

    Oh my God why it took youtube so long to reccomand me your video?!
    YES. I agree 100%. With the fact that ratchet is not himself, that everything is shallow, that rivet is shallow. That her lashing out at Kit was the lack of empathy and misguided (NOT TO MENTION THAT THE GAME HAS THE AUDACITY TO TELL AS SHE WAS RIGHT AT THE END, BECAUSE SHE IS A MARY SUE WHO NEVER HAS TO SUFFER ANY CONSEQUENCES EVEN HER LOOSING AN ARM MEANT NOTHING AT ALL MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY IT'S JUST A COSMETIC). I am working on a video about her and why I dislike Rivet SO MUCH and it's gonna be long but you, my friend, has just restored my belief in the world, in this fandom and gave me back my strenght to keep on working on it (I've been in kind of a motivation void because "everyone disagreed with me and loved Rivet ot bits"). I also already did a video on my channel about why the game doesn't work well with the interdimentional established lore of the previous games (Iff you'd be interested to check it out maybe? :'3) Rivet is hallow and flat because she has 0 development. She doesn't NEED anything. she can want things, but she doesn't NEED them, neither as a person, for help in fighting or getting to her goals nor as a fictional character. She also deosn't need to exist at all.
    I believe that the game has the same problem as many other media trying to go bigger and bigger with the stakes all the time. When the universe's existence is at stake it's hard to really care because, of course it's gonna be fixed, not to mention no human could ever relate to that kind of danger. We need a smaller scale. It CAN be with the bigger evil plot to stop too, but we need something for our heroes to fight for out of the personal spot not just because "it's the right thing to do". That's why I am a huge activist for anti-heroes. This whole game was so "safe" it made me sick and the worst part is - it's probably how it's gonna be. Next they'll probably find lombaxes and they're gonna be everything great they were told to be and the conflict will once again be out of a villain who is silly and incompetent but for some reason our heroes see them as a threat (Nefariosu used to be competent and him gooing around was a contrast to what he is capable of in his prime, but now he doesn't even have his own troops, he hires Goons for Less like... WHO ARE YOU)...
    Anyway, great video!

    I agree and disagree with some of these points. Gameplay wise, the combat is better than ever and I like that Rivet is functionally a Ratchet reskin. If she played differently, one character might be less fun to play as and players might favour one over the other. This was definitely the case in Spider-Man (2018); Players hated playing as Miles and MJ. The new platforming moves are great in combat; The Rift Tether, Phantom Dash and Hoverboots are satisfying and the only move I miss is the high jump. The Rift Tether would be better if it either had invincibility frames or allowed the player to continue moving while pulling a rift, because it currently puts the player at a big disadvantage; Too much risk, not enough reward. Giant Kit should have been playable because she's the only one of the main 4 without any gameplay and it would add to her character arc.
    In terms of plot; Everything that happens in the first section of Megalopolis is inconsistent, and I immediately picked up on it. Clank would be too logical and concerned with protecting the universe to even risk rebuilding the Dimensionator in the first place as it could damage the dimensions. Also, three main villains in the Future saga went mad with power over the idea of finding their lost species. Overcoming this temptation could be a fantastic arc for Ratchet (or Rivet) if contextualised well, but the story doesn't really address the risk of using the dimensionator to find the Lombaxes.
    More importantly, why would Clank reveal the dimensionator in public while under attack? It's an uncharacteristically stupid thing to do and it just irks me. Also I don't get why Ratchet would just let Rivet leave Kit behind, considering how determined he was to befriend her and bring her along for the ride.
    Apart from that, the plot isn't too bad. It's more character driven and fleshes out the cast pretty well. It's important to remember that consumerism satire doesn't have to be the main theme of every game, because it would get stale fast, but it's always good to include for worldbuilding. Rift Apart is more of a satire of totalitarian dictatorships, which can be seen a lot in the NPC and trooper voice lines, especially in Nefarious City.

      Yeah I found it odd that Ratchet and Kit had a far better dynamic than him and Clank, with Ratchet working to help her overcome her fears and insecurities, only to dump her on Rivet at the first opportunity with almost no acknowledgement from anyone.
      I think the problem with the writing isn't overall that there's no satire but rather even for kid friendly Pixar fare it's incredibly juvenile. Most of the dialogue could have been replaced with "Yeah go team we're the best!" and I wouldn't have noticed any difference. It's just so painfully infantile and lacks any sort of bite, which was precisely why the movie was savaged so hard by film critics who unlike video game critics actually have SOME standards in regards to writing. It's a problem that a lot of American writing seems to have and it's a shame to see what was once an exception to that fall into the same quagmire of shit. Maybe they were worried about being satirical in this politically caustic environment where you risk pissing everyone off regardless of what you say but I don't really feel like that's an excuse; even in a vacuum the writing in Rift Apart is abysmal.
      It's disappointing that this video is so heavily downvoted in favour of reviewers with no history with the series going OMG LE SO PRETTY GRAPHICS RIVET IS MY WAIFU. Rivet is elevated because Jennifer Hale is a god-tier VA but yeah, she’s bland. Instead of making her her own character, they decided to go with the option of making her so much like Ratchet that they’re basically finishing each other’s sentences. And that’s fine for a one-off dimensional adventure. Many franchises have done it, and it’s often used to show the protagonist a mirror of who they are so that they learn some lesson about themselves. But it’s not fine for making Rivet a full-fledged additional member of the main cast moving forward which is obviously the intention. How is she going to bring any new interesting story potential to the sequels that Ratchet himself can’t if she’s just him with a new look?
    And it also doesn’t help that the Ratchet she’s mirroring isn’t the interesting, brash, cocky, layered character Ratchet used to be, but the watered down plushy he’s become. Ratchet himself is bland now, and because Rivet is just another Ratchet, she’s bland too.

      Yeah you hit the nail on the head with that comment. I feel like, because Ratchet is kind of soft it doesnt make the game as emotional as it should because ratchets character has been the soft for some time now, especially in the 2016 game. However i do feel like this problem could be fixed. A possible way to make a change in Ratchets character would be to cause something terrible to happen to him, possibly have a friend he cares about be killed, Talwyn for example. Doing so would cause Ratchet to become angry and bitter and vengeful against the person that killed his girlfriend, who could unironically be a Lombax, this would also cause ratchet to harbor hatred and anger towards his own species. Rivet and her nice, soft and eager personality could try to help Ratchet throughout the story and they could eventually come to care about one another in a natural way rather than a forced one.
      That would make a good story and game.

    I've assumed since the Future trilogy that Ratchet's experiences from past games as a hero had finally humbled him, & that the beginning of Rift Apart simply was a parallel to his beginnings as a character. Whereas before old Ratchet might've felt entitled to the praise, present Ratchet is more humble about the hero worship, despite it being well deserved. It didn't really bother me in that way.
    However I will agree he seems to feel a little more... one note with each passing modern installment. Last time I felt genuinely moved by Ratchet's character was his character development in his interactions with Allister. I think whenever the next game is we need to finally tie up some loose ends. Meeting Max Apogee, seeing Angela again, & wrap up the Lombax storyline once & for all. We've had two games now talking about Kaden, & FOUR(or ok, maybe three, since Quest for Booty was more like filler) games now devoted to dragging out mystery behind where all these characters went. At this point either give me my pizza or stop hyping it up.
    This is the perfect opportunity to let Ratchet be a character again. Hell, a brand new Dimension is oozing with potential. Give us new gadgets, new worlds, & if nothing else... new enemies INCLUDING a new antagonist.

And he talks about the game like every game after the second one didn’t exist. The complaint about the platforming is one that sticks out. Ratchet hasn’t been a platform focused series since the first game and maybe the second. Insomniac has molded the games to be way more combat focused and this has been obvious since the 3rd game. Clearly he has some bias towards the first couple games which is fine but it seems like he went into this searching for problems. But as for everything what one person might like about something may be exactly why someone else doesn’t and that applies for a lot here. But the more I progressed through the story and saw less and less of ratchet and more of this one dimensional character of Rivet, I was beginning to get dissapointed. What crossed the like for me was the whole Rivet ditching Kit and can't seem to show any sympathy towards Kit who is obviously shown to be so remorseful about what she did to Rivet.
    When Kit cries out that she's broken, that's a perfect sign of instability from Kit. And what does Rivet do? Show any sympathy? No, just tells her she's hiding and afraid. This is perfect projection from Rivet seeing as she couldn't accept the fact that Kit isn't the murder bot that took her arm away anymore but is still using that fear of what happen to her get in the way of realizing that Kit has changed and feels sorry for what she did.

While perhaps not the best choice from a narrative standpoint, I always read the "washed up" bit at the beginning of the game as being an intentional meta-commentary on the state of the franchise, having not had a decent game since 2010, nevermind one that advanced the timeline. Another reason I figured this was intentional is various promotional material using voice lines not present in the actual game, (or a least not in the scenes they're portrayed in) such as "We're back." Insomniac wanted people to know that this was their big return to form, and I think it's perfectly in character for them to add a nod of sorts to their past failures in the writing.

Rivet is a variation of Ratchet's body with a different head, plays & moves the same. I don't want to see Purple Ratchet & Clank with a different paint job again. Sadly with the game credits it seems these Skins will be used again. I like Talwyn, Sasha & Angela more, why can they be playable characters or something.

    I absolutely agree, but the plot in this game has huge flaws. In fact, Ratchet and Rivet are not spatial analogues, since the game itself says that the pawnshops come from the same universe, and this already makes a huge hole in the plot and it's still a little flowers, then there are more holes in the plot.

    I don't understand where the dislikes are coming from. From my perspective, you explained the issues you had with the latest game in the series in a respectful manner, and explained why the original trilogy (Everybody seems to forget Deadlocked for some reason, but I like it and refer to it as the quadrilogy) beat out the latest games due to some of their story telling strengths.
    I think I feel the same way about the newer games as well, and I also feel the same about the Future trilogy. There's something that was lost in the leap from the PS2 to the PS3 when R&C made the jump. The writing became generic and clean, and the weapons lacked the same creative impact that they did back then. I gave Tools of Destruction a replay and found that the story was underwhelming and nonsensical in some aspects, while the gameplay only really picked up once I jumped into Challenge Mode. It's a decent game to play to kill time, but never really managed to be memorable for me.
    I do not have a PS5, but I think I could live without playing Rift Apart. I could just watch all of the cutscenes on CZcams and feel as though that could suffice in terms of understanding everything it has to offer. It looks like a fun game, but feels lacking in terms of what the franchise can actually achieve.

    This is gonna be long one.. :)
    I agree that the satirical humor that once graced the original series is partially lost, but then again it was completely lost in the future saga.. I think Rift Apart is actually well balanced between the charms of the future saga and original series. The cutscenes don't show it much but the in game content has that original old school influenced dark humor scattered whereas the main story has a fantasy flare to it taken from the future saga. I for one really liked that balance.
    I understand your gripes about the introduction and Ratchet seeming out of character at that specific moment, it seems to me that IG wanted to bring the newcomers of the 2016 reboot on board by letting Rift Apart seem like a sequel to the reboot even though it clearly isn't as the game continues to reference future saga story points. I also find the intro a bit disjointed when it comes to continuity ("Battle of Kerwan", "Blargs" and "Galactic Rangers") which kind of takes you out of the immersion because we know in fact that it is a sequel to the original timeline. I counteract this annoyance by canonizing one of the devs explanation of how the reboot is a part of the original timeline, the explanation being that the reboot is the heroes' origin events told by Captain Qwark which isn't a reliable source, and is a product in their universe. This doesn´t really forgive the disconnection in the introduction and Ratchet's behavior but their decision to try to include the newcomers is at least understandable.
    Where I disagree is with your explanation about Rivet and her being an average character and lacking empathy, I found that you lost the tragic nature of her dimension and her circumstance.. she's been fighting all of her life and she has clearly been through some shit and because of her situation she has developed traumas, trust issues and paranoid tendencies. This is just scratching the surface of her character since you can come to this conclusion in the second scene with her and clank, she's really a top tier character with Ratchet and I can't see how she gets shrugged off as average.
    Now we come to Ratchet, I agree that his relationship with Kit was one of the highlights and indicates his experience with developing friendships which shows what a long way he has come from the cocky Ratchet in the original. His insecurity about meeting the lombaxes is irrational since he saved their asses but that is acknowledged by the other characters and that brings us to the main theme of the game, it's really a game about mental health and the transcendence of fear and insecurities. I think Kit and Rivet have the most "real" fears and Ratchet's fear of meeting the lombaxes was just kind of shoehorned in there for thematic reasons.
    Rift Apart is surely not perfect but it's the best R&C I've seen since forever, I've always been biased towards the original series and nothing has ever topped Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal for me but I have to give them that they poured out their hearts making this game and it shows, it's wonderful that the spirit has been reignited and I look forward to the sequels and a Rivet and Kit game if they want to make one. 9/10

      Thanks for the comment! And yeah, like, I completely agree with what they wanted to do with the characters - the aspects of them you mentioned sound really good, I just feel like the game should have given these aspects more time, gone deeper, been more mature in how they handled it rather than simply making references which culminated in the rift (no pun intended) between Rivet and Kit. The game should have been longer to accommodate these aspects of their characters, instead were being told, yet not really shown all that much. Glad you enjoyed it though, it’s a good game and I hope they keep expanding it even further.

Like the reason the main universe is so good is because of ratchet and clank. But that would have meant making rivet a self centered jerk that is “better off on her own”. If clank showed rivet she needed to think of something other than herself and glory, or whatever and ratchet and to convince Kit that even if it seemed like she was defective it may have been on purpose like clank. Here is how this video is wrong: Ratchet being insecure about a party that has been trown into their faces in the middle of nothing happening is weird, as it is, and one of the themes in aspects of this game is that time can make you rusty and let even the greatest of heroes’s guard down, see that’s what happens with Ratchet and even with Clank making this a nice caracter mini arc in the game.
    Seperating the duo is just showing their desire to connect back and the conversations that Ratchet and Clank share are realy good and compelling, seperating them also is the perfect way to introduce rivet and her caracter.
    Oh boy is rivet more distinct than ratchet, not only does her dialog make her gameplay distinctive becouse you feel like wielding a different caracter but the gameplay feels perfect too, becouse news flash… it is the same as Ratchets gameplay and that’s a good thing, see rift apart has something called pacing and unbreakable flow, makeing rivet’s moveset compleatly different from Ratchets would break that flow (good example of this is the swapping between clank and ratchet in a crack in time).
    The part where you said that angela has an attitude that makes her great i burst out with laughter. Becouse that’s basicly what rivet has and it’s a much more compelling personality.
    And no Ratchet does not accept that rivet leaves kit behind. And no rivet has a self reflection becouse you can clearly see as she leaves she doesn’t whant to do it but does what kit whant while she is filled with anger.
    I think you missed the point with Rivets caracter being not just a another Ratchet when you said that she tries to save the galaxy and that’s all there is for her. No, she has multiple trust issues with robots that she must overcome seeing that the world is not black and white as the emperor wants here to think and many others, she is truly broken becouse of this, she lives in a remote hideout even though she has a nice community to live with, she even grows her own plants inside of her house, and the fact that when she was allowing her guard to go down and then finding out that kit was the one who took her arm and now kit acts like an asshole… it makes her even more insecure, but she keeps fighting and never stops trying, even though she has no reason to do that. Rivet at the end of the story overcomes this thing with kit together becouse as the fixer thaught that aknowledgeing someones pain and healing it together fixes one another while still nothing is perfect.
    Now to Ratchet. Sure ratchet was i guess funnier but tell me if you think you where the same person you where when you where 15 years old, i wouldn’t believe you, and that what ratchet is… a grown man who has experienced a lot of the future saga to make him like this, this ratchet is a lot more compelling of a caracter than he was in the original trilogy- having potential caracter arcs, like here we have his trugle of going to the lombax dimension. Also I don’t know why you keep talking about the og games as much, the capitalism was only strong in one game and only there it wasn’t a theme in the game, it was just a good run of jokes that died in the third game. And Ratchet shouldn’t be about just that, becouse it never was… what my point with this one is, is that the series needs to find what work for it and doesn’t, and it found it here. Let’s take horizon series for an example, it’s themes and narrative was about commercial and capitalistic criticism and Zero dawn sold alone with it’s ideas more than the series had ever made, but now with the newest instalment Rift apart, we can share that milestone too of selling more than the previous games, becouse the game just works.
    I btw agree with the lack of platforming which shouldn’t bother at all when there is plenty of it between the clank and glitch missions and during combat.
    Ok i’m not sure if anyone enjoyed the big clank sections so i don’t know why you are asking that but i think they could have made it work in this better* game.
    But yeah over all Rift apart is and will always be the best Ratchet and Clank game till the next game can compete. I too miss the old days with the edgy humor but those days are not coming back becouse frankly this series has found what works for it and i couldn’t be more intressed on what’s coming next, maybe that missed potential you talked about might be used like big kit or Rivet using for example different gadgets etc. Anyways, I hope you found some value in my rant😅 but i promise it comes from a good place too.

  • @blu3ntv

    I wouldn't say all these things are out of character, but invisible character development during the time we haven't seen them.
    Its not about if ratchet and clank are or are not the heroes of the galaxy, but its about what they think, they are scared due to their inactivity.
    Clank has built the dimentionator for ratchet because he saw the passion and love he has given up from the Lombaxes towards clank himself, someone he thinks may only have been there for assistance while ratchet gave up on everything.
    Ik clank joked about thinking ratchet as the sidekick, but people say very different things from what they feel, and after their emotions come to life due to their long inactivity missunderstanding and fear comes into play, which brings me back to the point of ratchet thinking they're washed up; its an incredibly realistic character moment that drives this game's relatively simple story to ubsurd levels of realism and is also fantastic in the way it delivers it.
    You mentioned how the characters are different from how you want them to be, if they were always like that then you would run out of stuff to joke about very quickly, and they did, that's why insomniac went with more character development which they needed; saying a character isn't the way you want it to be is like telling a friend to be happy after they broke up because you preferred them when they were funny.
    I'm not trying to say you are wrong in any way, all of these are opinions some people may share with you, but at many moments i feel your points don't stand up, especially when you contradict yourself, when you say you want them to be a certain way, but when they are then its all of the sudden bad?

      @@LolitaLaceCotton You know, Brian Allgeier and TJ Fixman (The Director and Writer of the Ratchet and Clank Future Saga) wanted the franchise to end with Tools of Destruction and A Crack in Time. It makes sense, because these two were always planned to be in the beginning.
      But Sony forced Insomniac to continue with the franchise. That's why games like All For One, Into the Nexus and Rift Apart spend their time contradicting each other narratively. These 3 games are like the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

    Disagree with most of your points but fair enough. I personally think Rift Apart runs circles around previous games character and story wise and that most of the levels were amazing. What was sacrificed in level density was made up with set-pieces that made the experience more memorable than in previous games. But I respect your opinion.

      @AndysTake  Před 3 lety +5

      Thanks, man, I respect your opinion too, and thanks for the comment. I think you’re hitting the nail on the head with level density here, as much of platforming actually lies in the build-up and make-up the levels. Savali for example, is beautiful, but just not as much fun to play as Metropolis despite the awesome hover boots.

    Personally, the only things keeping this game from being perfect would be:
    - Space battles and traversal (Crack in Time spoiled me with that one and still haven't recovered from the addiction lmao)
    - More dynamic arena
    - More variety in enemies

    I think the first mistake is trying to compare Rift Apart to the original games. You are always going to be disappointed because “they just don’t make games like they used to”, which is true. When a reviewer brings up the originals and nothing else, it makes me wonder if they even played the PS3 games. Because if they did, they would understand the transition period that got us here today.
    I think they portrayed the characters great and they showed a lot of heart, charm, and emotion. My main gripes with the game were that it felt too short (there definitely needed to be more planets) and Dr. Nefarious and Emperor Nefarious needed more screen time and development. If this game was longer, there would be more opportunities to fix the problems you mentioned. It just needed more.

    • @AndysTake
      @AndysTake  Před 3 lety +3

      I’ll give you that, I didn’t mention the future saga in this video. I’ve played them all several times, but somehow I still remember little from those games even though they’re newer. It’s easier to understand that transition period with those in mind this is true, but I still wouldn’t say it “justifies” it. Good insight though, I appreciate that!

      @redblue4127 Před 3 lety +3

      Not even the future games bridge this gap. Ratchet in Rift Apart is more like he was in the Reboot. That's a total character departure from Into the Nexus, the game Rift Apart follows, which had by far the most refined and mature Ratchet we've ever seen.

    • @SuperWorldJumper
      @SuperWorldJumper Před 3 lety +1

      Red Blue I wouldn’t call it a character departure, per se, just character progression. It’s been years for Ratchet between Rift Apart and Into The Nexus. He hasn’t saved the universe for a long time and he’s feeling like perhaps he doesn’t have the right stuff any more. Take this along with his inner struggle about whether he actually wants to find the Lombaxes or not because he’s afraid what will happen when he does. However, even though he’s starting to lack self-confidence, he more than makes up for it with his confidence and support of others.
      I would say his RA attitude far outshines his 2016 one. But I’m curious to know your opinions. How exactly does the RA Ratchet depart from his character in ItN?

    • @AndysTake
      @AndysTake  Před 3 lety

      @@SuperWorldJumper it’s pretty obvious to be honest if you play ItN right now. From the get go, Ratchet kinda has a “f this” attitude, I noticed it right away when he and clank had to fix the ship from the outside. No scenes in Rift Apart had that kind of Ratchet.

    Just finished the game and felt hollow and empty when the credits rolled. Glad I found your video and you articulated what I was thinking. The old R&C games had so much character and substance and they were written so well. Rift Apart felt dumbed down and sterile. Rivet was boring. Kit was irritating. Ratchet and Clank were shells of themselves. The game is gorgeous and plays well but throughout the play through there was just something missing. I hope an old school R&C game with that witty writing will be made again but honestly doesn’t seem likely.

    Watching this review made me open eyes about the new characters, Rivet and Kit. I didn’t really think about how Rivet is actually a pretty bland character with no real motives or goals besides the obvious ones like you stated (Pretty much being a purple gender bent version of Ratchet) Also not having anything unique while playing as Rivet was a let down, there should’ve been some exclusive weapons or abilities you should’ve had while playing as her, I also didn’t even realize that you never play as Kit, which really boggled me. Overall it was still a very fun game and I hope we get more games with Rivet and Kit

    • @lagopusvulpuz1571

      Rivet Isn't even a "Gender bent version". Rivet is a variation of Ratchet's body with a different head. A male with eyeliner that's it. Same male hips, the reason they have a different tail is to tell them apart when they wear an armor.
      I don't want to see Purple Ratchet & Clank with a different paint job.

    Finally somebody who understands what made this series great in the first place. Ratchet becoming a hollow shell of his former self, all the clever and witty writing being removed, the level design has barely any platforming, and worse of all this game makes it so the 2016 remake is now the canon origin story of R&C completely ignoring the original PS2 game.
    The gameplay is good, but this series has lost it's heart and soul. I just wish Sony would put the PS2 games on PS4/PS5.
