1620 On A Gympie to Mayne Coal Train

- One of my favourite locomotives was English Electric 1620. It was always nostalgic for me whenever I got to drive this engine, as it reminded me of the many times as a kid my Dad would take me to work with him.
I remember being on a sleeper train from Cloncurry to Kajabbi in 1983, and along the way a cow happened to walk up onto the line in front of us. Dad was letting me move the throttle while sitting on his lap, and I instinctively went to move the throttle to idle and he quickly reefed it back wide open. I protested and said "but Dad there is a cow!! "by this time the whistle had been blown and we hit the poor old cow... The head went one way and the body out the other.
It has always stayed with me, that if you are going to hit a beast. HIT IT HARD. That way it won't go under, but out to the side.
Anyway this video is a little tamer than sleeper trains to Kajabbi, it was a leisurely ride to Old Gympie and an exchange of empty HJS wagons for 2 loaded with Coal. The coal from Blair Athol near Clermont, was used to keep QR's heritage steam locomotives operating.
The Run allowed us to maintain, route knowledge to Gympie and keep traction qualified on 1620.

Hi Adrian, I am very impressed with the beautiful scenery. I didn't know that part of Australia was so green and beautiful. The song at the end was very moving.
Great ride Adrian! I see there are no notches visible on the throttle? I was told that EE locos didn't use them , but I can see good and bad reasons for not having them , though having notches makes more sense imo? The turbo is fantastic and I remember catching trains with a mate on the weekend in my teens. We would get on at Coorparoo and head to the city and through the tunnels and it was great when we had a 1620 and the SS cars and the drive gave it some through the long tunnel to Bowen Hills!! It's no fun anymore :-(.

Hey thanks Gregg. The Pommys had air throttles and act a bit like a steam loco, in that there is delay when you power up and down. They were better riding and seemed to keep their feet better at low speed than the clydes, but they weren't quick off the mark like the 1502's. My favourite were the 1300 class, I only got to ride with Dad on them as a kid. The 1620's were all that I officially qualified on. And 1632 at Mary Valley in Gympie was special to me as it was used as the Emerald shunt engine and was also invovled in a head on with C17 254 at Theebine. Hope to catch up soon. Cheers Adrian
Thanks Adrian. It reminded me of when I used to go up to Redbank RMD and work on restoring 1650. I liked the design of the 1620s, a bit like a mini 1300. As well as driving, Your Mate is pretty good with the camera.
So what is your background Rob? If you worked on 1650, you must've been a histo member at one time? I actually would've thought QR would've put some money towards getting it roadworthy again, but politics always seemed to get in the way.
@@adriannettlefold9084 I was invited to come and do some work on 1650 as part of the ARHS. It ran into a clash of sorts between a few bods and then the Diesel Preservation Group arose. I had to get a knee replaced and stepped back from railways. After a year or so I joined up with Swanbank and hung around there for a while. A former ARHS member joined and I found the atmosphere changed, not for the better. I left them, had my other Knee replaced and am not "flexible enough for "Railway Work".
@@firstfreeone so what was your line of work before? Were you a fitter in the Railway at Redbank?

Hi Lew. Glad you liked it, mate. Yeah you would"ve gotten on with my Dad really well I reckon. He was the one who kept us laughing by the things he said and did. Not really a joke teller, but a funny man none the less. That was my Grandma's favourite hymn and I remember I was in Sicily laying on my bed and the first suggested youtube I got when I opened my phone was What A friend have in Jesus. lt was then the phone rang and my uncle told me she had passed away.

Great video mate lots of scenes of Neil driving never been all around Banks Pocket so it was a eye opener for me me keep up the great work mare by the way I am Guard Nambour now started up there 3 weeks ago and going well at this stage of the game mate.

Does Queensland rail still own the loco or does the workshops own it
All the workshops and rolling stock is owned by QR. The museum is separate to my knowledge.
Is this locomotive still operating?
To my knowledge it needs a lot of work done to re-wire the electrical side. After an audit was done they found insulation on some of the heavy wiring melted and grounded it, from memory somewhere around 2018. It's parked out the back in the workshops at Ipswich.
