Sicilia My First Trip & Tour in 2006.
This video was taken by a wonderful couple, who I became friends with, on a group tour I did whilst visiting Italy in 2006. It was the end of a 2 1/2month stay, where I had been learning Italian in Florence. I made lots of very dear friends, and I hope that if they are still with us, that those who were on the bus tour, will enjoy seeing themselves. Albeit some 18yrs later.
I would like to dedicate it to the memory of my Grandfather's Great Grandmother Dora. She was from Sicily. And the love of the Island, the food, the language and most of all the people, has grown from my Grandfather teaching me italian.
A very big thank you to Gaudenzio and Anastasia who filmed and narrate this video. Sugnu gratu assai.

When looking through my files, it occurred to me that I had some unused footage and decided to make a follow up video about the 2 Dam construction jobs I worked on. The second was on my mate's farm to increase the size of his main dam before he sold it.

Andrian nettlefold I don't want to be rude but can please answer my question why didn't the beyer garret get to haul this train to cunnamulla
@katrinalaw1479 I wasn't on the trip so couldn't really say why, other than the Garratt had a broken lubricator pipe which had to be fixed before the return trip. Perhaps the crews knew about the broken spring before hand as well... I just don't know. Sorry.
Oh that's ok I was just why the 1772d train had to pull the trip to cunnamulla and not the garret and I was thinking that the garret was to big to go to cunnamulla or maybe if they already had a last steam excursion to go to cunnamulla
Like with the passing of the _Capricornian_ to a Tilt Train only service, the withdrawal of the _Sunlander_ and the M series cars has left a noticeable hole in QR's Traveltrain fleet. I noticed the _Westlander_ and _Inlander_ services were sitting car only trains, which would make these services far from attractive to the average passenger for long journies. I feel that QR Traveltrain management have dropped the ball here, preferring to focus on their Tilt Trains and the _Spirit of the Outback,_ leaving a hole in train services to Rockhampton and further into North Queensland. Perhaps their intention is to destroy long distance train travel, aside from the Tilt Trains? As an aside, I found 1754 at Redbank recently, partially stripped. It seems her days are numbered... 😞
We will have to wait and see. I reckon after the Olympics there won't be any money and that will see things fall in a heap. 1754 if it is still being worked on will probably end up with a new maxi cab and 26L airbrake equipment, then head to Cairns.
Was the staff used for messaging between stations?
Hi, no it's the permission that the driver needs to ve able to travel from one station to the next. This ensures that his train is the only train that is on that section of track at that time and that he has no fear of colliding with another train. They used staff ticket as a safe working system, before electric signalling came in.
Needed a mechanical stocker

@@krisdowie7747 are you up to having a talk? can you email me adriannettlefold@hotmail.com I'm doing a youtube project and wanted to talk to steam era guys who worked out this way
Hey Adrian, great video. Just a quick question, so I applied for a Suburban Train Operator job with QR, it’s still in progress but I was doing some research in relation to the position and I think I may have applied for the wrong position. I was wanting to become a train driver but it seems I got mistaken and thought the operator position was the driver job, but instead looks like it’s more shunting trains in a depot instead of driving them on the network. Just wanted to double check if this is correct, and if so do you reckon I should stick with it if successful and then apply for a driver job later down the track (no pun intended), or should I cancel the application and just wait for the driver job to come up instead? Thanks
Hi mate. If it's with QR, it sounds like you have applied to become a Rail Operater which is a.Shunter's position. This is a good position to get into QR and my advice is to take the job and when a guards job or a Driver's job come up you then apply for that position. External job offers don't come up very often and you might be without a job if you wait for them to offer a Driver's position. Getting your foot in the door into QR is the hardest part. Internal people get first chop over people like yourself as an External. Hope that helps
So just clarifying, with the shunter job, you get to drive and move trains, but only within the depot itself correct? Or do you just direct and attach and detach carriage etc.
@samuelwarrilow407 you don't drive anything. You couple up and detach, you switch points, you do computer work as in train lists, you operate signal panels. You call out trains from the stabling yards and put them into their allotted road when they come back to the yard. Driving is separate to this altogether. Like I said, if you are wanting a job with QR, take any job to get your foot in the door, then apply to become a driver. Otherwise look for a trainee driver's position with Aurizon or Pacific National or Watco
@@adriannettlefold9084 thanks for the advice, i have applied for PN and Watco, couldn't see any trainee positions with Aurizon. But I'll still wait for the results of the operator job and also keep an eye out for QR driver jobs as well. I have a causal job at the moment so I'm not at risk of being unemployed while waiting, but if I'm accepted in some form I'll go straight into the new job.
Great units. Sad to see them go. Like classic units in the UK, they've captured many memories in those who travelled on them for so long. 2023 was my last ride in a EMU, No 33
They're still here.

4:05 well thats... depressing
Is this locomotive still operating?
To my knowledge it needs a lot of work done to re-wire the electrical side. After an audit was done they found insulation on some of the heavy wiring melted and grounded it, from memory somewhere around 2018. It's parked out the back in the workshops at Ipswich.

Welcome back to the footplate, Mate. We have missed you. Don't the LED ditch lights chuck out some light. You did not need the poor excuse for a headlight that is on 974.
I was flying blind... too much white light from the firebox and no light right out in front where it was needed. But we managed.

I rode this train to Copabella what a fantastic day it was. Felt sorry for the fiewmen on the footplate dealing with rotten coal

Poor emu 75!😢
Very good apart from the religious propaganda at the end. I was unaware the line from Charleville to Quilpie is now officially closed. Mike (ex-Railpage Forums)…”The Vinelander”.
Used be guard Mayne and then went back to shunting at Mayne about 2004 as shunter in charge then a foreman north panel operator. Was ok time and recognised voice of Jeffery Martin as shunter in the end.
I didn't get to Mayne till 2009, so must have just missed you. And Yes that was to 2 Dad's.
Great video Adrian, I love how you incorporated the 'then and now'. Glad to see you back on the footplate.
Thanks Neranda. Hope all is well with you. It was good to catch up with Peter, 20yrs since we worked together. Time stops for no one hey. Take care.
I don’t know why but I can just imagine the day that the NGRs will be getting scrapped and how much we will realise how fast time has went but to be honest I may not see them because surprisingly QR like to keep their trains for a long time. From when I made this comment the EMUs are quite hard to find around the network now but I hope they stay around for that little bit longer as they are great trains and I will deeply miss them. 😢

Great to see you back on the Footplate Adrian! I did many a trip behind the "Brown Bomber" in my younger days, when QR actually cared about their heritage??? I haven't seen Steam on the main for a long time now, which is a big shame. Great footage by Paul which adds to your story. Hope to see more from you on the rails. Cheers Gregg.
Hey Gregg. Yeah Paul has been very generous to me, hopefully I will end up getting some more footage once 971 is up and running or if SDSR manages to lease other locomotives. I don't know what QR Heritage has planned, but they seem to be limited to running from Ipswich to Grandchester at the present, due to the big hole in the ground being built. The film highlights what has been lost to history as is the case everywhere. Hope your project is progressing. Cheers and Happy Easter.
Just Wonderful and no, you can' make old friends. SOOOO glad for the Blue Hat Scociety to be back on the footplate where he belogs, even with a coal shovel BUT you lay a nice fire, Mate! THERES PIECES OF A DOOR EVERYWHERE
There was a couple of other passenger trips that went to Cunnamulla after this. The last one was with 1620 maybe in 2010/11? It was part of an ARHS trip. 1620 I think may have hauled the Westlander on that trip too? There's photos around somewhere on the interwebs. I believe the trip went to Quilpie and Cunnamulla with the M series prior to the Sunlander being withdrawn.
I don't think you watched this video all the way to the end, did you? Otherwise you would've seen the photos and the dates. 2012. I don't know these people from out in the sticks these days hahahaha

Travelled out to Cunnamulla, Quilpie and Charleville this year. Cunnamulla station has been done up so looks good and has all its history up on displays around the station which is great. Quilpie sadly is not looking so good though there is a small section of the visitor centre dedicated to its rail history. Loved this video, just makes me sad that I am too young to have been able to travel to these places by rail.

hi, which engine is that?
Indian built Air cooled 6 cylinder Ruston Hornsby. 6YDA Mk II.
Did this wonderful trip many times as a boy whilst on holiday with my mum and dad, It took us the best part of 3 days and two nights to get from London to Palermo. I remember getting the train from St Pancras to Dover, then a ship from Dover to Calais, and then a train from Calais to either Paris or Milan, However catching a train to Milan meant having to wait about 8 hours to get the connecting train from Milan to Palermo as there was only one train a day. I can also remember my father having to produce Passports every time we came to crossing a border, unlike today in the EU. Yes it was exhausting, but at that young age it was like an adventure to me. If seeing sights is your thing then going through Switzerland by train is breath taking. wonderful, wonderful memories I will always cherish.
I do love seeing the sights. I don't know when I will return to my beloved Sicilia. Hopefully again soon. I have another video I am working on which is of one if the tours I did in 2006. I will hopefully have it up after I get home from Perth.
Can you cast the bucket to gain any kind of reach? Beautiful machine
I am not expert at operating this machine, but I have managed to cast the bucket far enough to reach where I needed to on the one and only job I have used it for. You are limited by length of drag rope as to how far you can cast the bucket, 25m.
Great to see Clapham mentioned, I started there in '83. Congrats the the career.
Thanks mate.
I just stopped by a spot on my way home the other day that has a 22b and a 30 b. unfortunately it looks like they over loaded the boom or something else catastrophic happend because it was all over the ground twisted up and bent all too hell from the tip too the but section.
It wouldn't take much to have catastrophic failure of the boom if there was something that hit it or caused twisting, especially during crane work. Lots of video on CZcams with that sort of thing. Where were the machines you saw?

Use to work at TrackFast Chullora NSW now Pacific National, ran super freighters to Indooroopilly from memory. A work mate walked in one day and said he was taking a job at Clapham and they are freighting up all his furniture for free in a 20 foot container. Some days later that was the last I saw of him, I guess he is no longer at Clapham. All changed now, here NSW even freight is all privatised many liveries on different engines left right and centre. Nice Video.
Not sure what year Clapham ceased to exist. But the NSW stuff comes in at Acacia Ridge and then on the dual gauge down to Fisherman's Island. I started in Cloncurry so didn't get too familiar with the South East till late, when most of the depots were closed or privatised.
Awesome video, me 27 years NSW. I wished I had taken a camera over all those years. Different roles, went from Labourer to Car and Wagon Assembler, Car and Wagon Examiner yes Westinghouse then to Ticket Inspector book em Dano. Finally ending up as shift Supervisor Security Control Rail Management Centre RailCorp NSW.
It's a good feeling to look back on a long career and the things we achieve isn't it. I must say I'm nearing 23yrs and I am finding it harder to keep a smile on my dial. People and the culture are not the same, it's sad to see the light heartedness and mateship go out of the job. I reckon I will be looking for the gate sooner rather than later. I loved learning Westinghouse Airbrake. Now no one would even care to know about brass piston and ring, passed the slide valve and pin. Take care mate. And God Bless the Railwaymen.
