    “I am pressed for time” is indeed better than “I have no time”.
    Maybe add “I am so sorry I can’t join your party because I am pressed for time due to …”
    “Run out of time” might also be interpreted as 生命時日無多
    The others are very good.
    ------
    “I’m at hospital” is still a little bit misleading perhaps.
    “I’m at hospital visiting a friend” should be clearer.
    Actually, in Cantonese, 我「o係」 醫院 is also not sufficient to convey the meaning ( whether I am sick or I am just visiting someone there / working there ).

    • @MeiinUK
      @MeiinUK Před 6 měsíci

      Yes. The way that academics teach English, as a subject, is not how locals of any country picks up the language. The other thing is that she is teaching English as a foreign language for non-native speaker. This is a certification to say "do these basics and you can be qualified for this set standards". It is mostly for companies to hire candidates for. So that they are confident that you will be able to communicate. And the reason they want this, is also because when you are inside an organisation, what you say... and how you say it... is legally and contractually binding. But of course, if you don't plan to work for foreign companies. It does not matter anyway ?... English taught in English speaking countries is very different.... The reason why these exams exists in HK is because of global trades and shipments. But because you are in a city of multiracial multi national location... sometimes behave in a more "Q&A" manner is a tiny bit more time saving. However... if you are in a seasoned office.. or a long term company.. then be more friendlier is more important. Cos you don't want to offend already build up customers. Or maybe I'm thinking too much and HK people don't really care by this stage...

      It is detention as well in the UK.... (but I think this money, or HK now uses some kind of advertising finance, so this is going to earn her money)..... This is why they are choosing "parody" to provoke for reactions... and then this would gain them money in HK.

    • @MeiinUK
      @MeiinUK Před 6 měsíci

      You also need to understand that in HK... people are often... quite rude, strong.. because, they mostly juggle many actual jobs together. So... often, they have a lot of exaggerated responses ?.... They normally watch you til you break... or insult you. (But this in cantonese terms.. just means..."exaggeration".... ) So they are saying that, using rude and blunt and ironic comments, in a high cantonese tone is the norm. It is like... how Americans often say things like... "Get outta here !".... or in English.. it is more like... "You're pulling my leg !!! "..... I normally say the sHt word... But to them, this is like seriously crude. But yes.. as most teachers would advice. Avoid swearing, but replace the word with something else. So I say "sugar" a lot. Especially if it kind of annoys me. With online social media. I use "OMG" a lot more.. .and I also now use "oops" as well.. since they too have language detection tools etc. (Or maybe it is genuine person behind the screen. Whatever it is.)

    It would be great if you pointed out the correct pronunciation of the word "HOSPITAL." Notice that you pronounced "TAL" with a "d" sound instead of "hostpi-TO," as people in Hong Kong commonly do.

    • @MeiinUK
      @MeiinUK Před 6 měsíci

      It's fine if you are unsure sometimes .. but listen to the person that you're talking to sometimes and readjust. Learn on the go. Always do a simple break down... And cut the word into the correct syllables. Hospital = hos/pi/tal. Sounds like "hos-be-tull". Sometimes if you know that you sound different to the other person, because of accents or cultural differences... If you just adjust yourself to their style, it kind of makes the conversation more congruent... Just say "Sorry, hos-be-tal." This is just a polite way to behave. It makes the other person realise that you understood them. You can add this to the cheat sheets. I normally have a list of "cheat tricks" that I go through and tick it down to make sure I have done something correct.... especially for long documents. Or preparing a speech. Or write example templates so that I can use it in the correct settings. This makes myself more confident.
      Being born and raised in the UK, the ability to split a word into the syllables is taught at say junior school level. Around 3 to 4 years old as you speak. So it is the basic fundamental of English speech. Although I know that melody is teaching the "English as a foreign language"..(as an external speaker)... I am hoping that if I write this post from an "English as an English speakers" angle, it will help you bridge the gaps on the small basic mistakes.
      I always say, if you can self correct something, then you have more or less internalised that subject. You know it well then.

      @hopeallwell7228 Před 6 měsíci +1

      it really depends on the context. usually you say "good day" when you are done talking or after exchanging pleasantries. Mostly b/s stuff. So you just want to move on, you politely say "Have a good day" and go your merrily separate way. BUT, you can use it in a sarcastic way, "Good day" when you just want to walk away and have no interest in babbling on and hence cut the conversation short. So you say "Have a good day" and walk away.

    • @hopeallwell7228
      @hopeallwell7228 Před 6 měsíci

      In your case, if it's in the morning, simply say Good morning with a smile, so there is no misunderstanding. Good day perhaps is so formal that nobody is using it except when expressing goodbye. If your boss sees you first thing in the morning, and you say Good day, he might think that you just want to walk away from him right away. After you exchange pleasantries, you certainly can say "Have a good day" to end the conversation.

      it means exactly what you think it means. A very blunt way to say I do not have time for you. Get lost. Some bosses may say that to their underlings. You will find time or have time if the person is important.

    • @MeiinUK
      @MeiinUK Před 6 měsíci +1

      If somebody is important to you in terms of the relationship. Just say something like "I am not able to talk right now, but can we schedule a time to talk ?".... A good corporate relationship is also to have good time management, as in, estimate the time it takes, and write summary reports etc. Cos everybody is busy, so quantify or split a task into components and assign a time limit to this. Your colleagues would appreciate you. If for personal relationships, of course more emotions or friendlier responses or words is better. In my working life, I've worked in both British companies and American companies as well. Sometimes the choice of words just have a little bit of differences.. maybe about 20%.... say... It's kind of also related to their corporate laws as well sometimes. Explicit instructions are more preferred in American corporates cos their strict processes and job roles require it, such that you don't fail or sue the company. Whereas in British companies, this is less so.. but building relationships are far more important. But you always need to know the organisational chart and know the boundary of your roles. And communicate so that you don't make mistakes is far more important. By mistakes... people really mean "risks".... In the UK, people tend to do a lot as well for a role. But time management is important too. And mostly, you can't overdo. As in.. never do more time... when you are not going to get paid for it. UK has around 70 million people. USA has 300 million. So you can assess how much and why you need to speak about priorities etc. "Should we (as a team) clear all of the orders for January ?"... Boss: "No, because we want to get around 20k pounds back this month. Let us do 4 of the high value orders then a few of the lower value ones. But pick the ones closest towards the same area for us to save on petrol costs."....

    When you are really busy or simply don't want to take on more tasks, you can say "My plate is full already ..." or "I don't want to bite off more than I can chew ..." Then people will understand and hopefully leave you alone with your phone.

      if you must you can use interesting. This YT business is very interesting. You don't necessarily want to say interesting business. You may say this is a very interesting business idea.
