The Difference Between Protestantism and Orthodoxy

  • “Our religion [Orthodox Christianity] is the religion of religions. It is from revelation, the authentic and true religion. The other religions are human, hollow. They do not know the greatness of the Triune God. They do not know that our aim, our destiny, is to become gods according to grace, to attain likeness with the Triune God, to become one with Him and among ourselves.” - St. Porphyrios of Kavsokalyvia, Wounded by Love (p. 94).

    For all to consider:
Worship is not man-made, but revealed and handed down to us. It is heavenly, heaven-given. We don't make it up. We don't imitate or follow the cultural currents of our day (music, style, etc.) but we celebrate the timeless Mystery of the Kingdom which is the same yesterday, today and forever, as is the Faith Once Delivered. The Way, Truth and Life of the Church is Christ and He is not changing from age to age. This heavenly worship was given and treasured and insofar as there has been change over the 2000 years it pertains only to certain externals or the human side of the SYNERGY (cooperation) between God and man, not the core, the prayers, the eternal reality. Remember the ancient maxim: as we pray, so we believe. The opposite is also true: as we believe, so we pray. HENCE, our worship is NOT secondary, at all, or indifferent to our Faith, our spiritual vision and outlook as to WHO GOD IS/WHO WE ARE/HOW WE COMMUNE with HIM.
Thus, the above videos point to a very great chasm between the heavenly, reveled worship of God, which is timeless and eternal, but shows forth in the One Church, and the changing, cultural conditioned worship found among many Protestants.

To think you’re comparing ancient Christianity (Orthodoxy is even on paper the oldest) and saying something so blasphemous? Jesus made it clear He also didn’t come to abrogate the law but to fill it to the fullest. God doesn’t change and neither did the manner of worship He set forth in the Old Testament. He’s the same today as He was yesterday and ever will be. So what will you choose? To continue to worship man centred humanism? Or Christ centred Theanthropism? Think before you make such statements and blaspheme God by your own ignorance on the matter. I say this with love for your soul.

Why are there so many immature people in the comments? If you’re Orthodox, Catholic or Protestant - we all should act Christlike and not compete on who “worships the best”, there’s something really spritually immature about that.
One could argue that the Orthodox and Catholic churches feel more heavenly (and I would agree on that), but worship is not only singing in chrurches, it is also serving others and, of course, we can sing in worship in other places like in our homes, on the streets, etc. But most importantly, God looks at our hearts and not necessarily our surroundings, when it comes to worship.
All I see (from both sides on this video) is Christ-believing people who worship their Creator and Saviour.
Our boast is in Christ, not in ourselves.

@@Don_C06 and ? You read the English without knowing the context of anything - so you aren’t an orthodox Christian and so you won’t know that the English translation is a mistranslation
A quick look into the Orthodox Study Bible, though, will show you that Jeremiah 17:9 (Masoretic) is not in fact Jeremiah 17:9 (Septuagint); it is, rather, Jeremiah 17:5 (Septuagint), which reads in the Greek as follows:
βαθεῖα ἡ καρδία παρὰ πάντα καὶ ἄνθρωπός ἐστιν καὶ τίς γνώσεται αὐτόν (The heart is deep beyond all things, and it is the man, and who can know him?).
When we examine the writings of the Fathers, this holds to be true, as this is the text that they comment on. Their commentary, then, focuses on Christ. As an example, here is an excerpt from Against Heresies by St. Irenaeus of Lyons, which includes the verse in its proper translation:
"For this reason it is said, “Who shall declare his generation?” since “he is man, and who shall recognize him?”But one to whom the Father who is in heaven has revealed him knows him, so that he understands that he who “was not born either by the will of the flesh or by the will of man”is the Son of man, that is, Christ, the Son of the living God. For I have shown from the Scriptures that no one of the children of Adam is as to everything, and absolutely, called God or named Lord. But that he is himself in his own right, beyond all people who ever lived, God, and Lord, and King eternal and the incarnate Word, proclaimed by all the prophets, the apostles and by the Spirit, may be seen by all who have attained to even a small portion of the truth. Now, the Scriptures would not have testified these things of him, if, like others, he had been a mere man. But that he had, beyond all others, in himself that pre-eminent birth that is from the most high Father, and also experienced that pre-eminent generation that is from the Virgin, the divine Scriptures do in both respects testify of him."

      1. Chanting is NOT UNIQUE to Easterners. Many reformational churches also chant. Some Eastern Orthodox churches have also used musical instruments to accompany them singing. You can easily browse "Greek Orthodox Church with Keyboard Instrument" on CZcams. The use of musical instruments in the liturgy is NOT UNIQUE to the reformational churches.
      2. Protestantism is a system, NOT an ecclesial body. Churches adhering to this system include Moravians, Anglicans, Lutherans, Reformed, Credobaptist, etc. They all affirm the apostolic teaching preserved before, during, and after the reformation.
Similarly, Ecclesialism is a system, NOT an ecclesial body. Churches affirming this system include:
      - Genuine/True Eastern Orthodox
      - World Eastern Orthodox
      - Various streams of Oriental Orthodox
      - Old Believers
      - Assyrian Church of the East
      - Ancient Church of the East
      - Roman Catholics
      - Sedevacantists
      - etc.
Each of them believes that their church alone is the one true church, and those other bodies are anathema.
      3. Charismaticism is also present in Eastern Orthodoxy; you can easily find it in the St. Symeon the New Theologian brotherhood and other similar interjurisdiction societies of priests and laities. Fr. Eusebius Stephanou, Fr. Timothy Cremeens, and so many other priests.

Orthodox Church may not follow modern music and style, but it does follow that of the 11th century. So in the 11th century it was following the culture of that time and has remained there. I’m neither Protestant, Orthodox…or Roman Catholic, but the Protestant looks more authentic while the orthodox looks very religious, traditional, and archaic with people in costumes and a lot of extra bells and whistles. Who was St. Porphyrios addressing this statement to? To his own people.
But here we are posting this on the internet as if everyone is on the same page. To me there’s no true love in this post but the spirit of pride, arrogance of the internet world. Lord have mercy on us all.☦️😔
To continue the quote posted of St. Porphyrios on page 94…
“These are things the other religions do not know. The ultimate aim of our religion is that they may be one. Here the work of Christ find completion. Our religion is love, it is eros, it is enthusiasm, it is madness, it is longing for the divine. All these things are within us. Our souls demand that we attain them.
For many people, however, religion is a struggle, a source of agony and anxiety. That’s why many of the ‘religious minded’ are regarded as unfortunates, because others can see the desperate state they are in. And so it is. Because for the person who doesn’t understand the deeper meaning a religion and doesn’t experience it, religion ends up as an illness, and indeed a terrible illness. So terrible that the person loses control of his actions and becomes weak willed it and spineless, he is filled with agony and anxiety and is driven to and fro by the evil spirit. He makes prostrations, he weeps, he exclaims , he believes he is humbling himself, and all this humility is a work of Satan. Some such people experience religion as a kind of hell. They make prostrations and cross them selves in church and they say, we are ‘unworthy sinners’, then as soon as they come out they start to blaspheme everything holy whenever someone upsets them a little. It is very clear that there is something demonic in this.
In fact, the Christian religion transforms people and heals them. The most important precondition, however, for someone to recognize and discern the truth is humility. Egotism darkens a persons mind, it confuses him, it leads him astray, to heresy. It is important for a person to understand the truth.”

I say this out of love and concern, and don't wish to be rude, but I don't think it's right to say that only the Orthodox church allows for people to be transfigured by Christ (which is what seems to be implied by saying the first group is only emotional for Jesus). Many people's lives have been transformed by Christ in other denominations outside of the Eastern Orthodox church. Even if you think the first style of worship is not ideal (which I frankly agree with to an extent) it doesn't mean Christ isn't working in these people. If you want to say that a more liturgical style of worship is more akin to what the apostles practiced and is more reverent, please go ahead and do so! But do not deny the transforming work of the holy Spirit in others in the process.

Jesus is Lord! He paid for your sins! By the way, we were all sinners. (that’s our nature without God) Jesus died a very bad death for you. He was nailed to a cross. God (YAHWEH) wants your heart because He loves you. Jesus was the perfect Lamb to sacrifice because He had no blemish. In other words, Jesus never sinned but he died for our sins. He paid the fines for our sins. That’s so crazy because we sin so much in our daily lives! He rose from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit! Jesus was sent by God because He’s God’s own son! He was filled with the Precious Holy Spirit (God’s Spirit) so He had the power over sin! We can receive the Holy Spirit if we do these things:
      1. Admit we are a sinner and repent from your sins (turn away from sin)
      2. Believe that Jesus is God and He died for you and rose for you
      3. Confess that Jesus is Lord.
I love you, please take this into action. God loves you, Jesus loves you and the Holy Spirit loves you! You were in Their mind before creation. If you do these things you can have eternal life with God in Heaven! Look at creation, you can tell that there is a creator, the proof: creation. In the same way you know that there was a painter because you can see the painting. God is real and He’s coming to judge the world. It’s not by our own works we get saved but the works of Jesus Christ. Put your trust in Jesus and let the Holy Spirit lead your lives! I love you all, that’s why I am sharing this! I don’t anyone to go to hell! God bless you! Read the Bible!❤️🔥🕊😃

      Yup!
      1. Chanting is NOT UNIQUE to the easterners. Many reformational churches do.

      Wrong.
      1. Chanting is NOT UNIQUE to the easterners. Many reformational churches do.

God sees the heart. Orthodox here I watch your content but there is no need to shame in comparison other denominations with subtle prideful undertones in order to reveal our beauty in worship. If they are not against us, they are for us. God rejoices in people who follow him. How we treat our brothers and sisters in Christ and honor his holiness, pleases him.
    Galatians 6:1-5
Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important.
    Isaiah 58:3-12
The members of Isaiah's audience were fasting for all the wrong reasons! They fasted to get things from God and hypocritically appear righteous.

Protestants who worship in this way with rock music and emotional manipulation often feel spiritually empty and know deep inside that what they are doing isn’t bringing them closer to God. Many of them are looking for something deeper and more sober, something spiritual rather than merely emotional and sentimental. This is for them.

You forget there’s small churches. Protestants aren’t all charismatic mega church concert attendees. Most are just in a typical baptist church or something and have a choir and hymn book which they sing a few songs then the preacher does a sermon for an hour. this isn’t typical

So im going to say this ot of respect to my brothers and sisters in the apostolic church of (Orthodoxy) because im seeing this frequently ot of orthodox Christians not many but its becoming mor popular and i dont wish the image of the orthodox church to be ruined.
if the people in the stadium are not Christians because they don't worship they way you want them to then why dont you give everyone what they need to worship. if the Christians out on the streets like evangelical are somehow not Christian to your standards and are fake then you bring 60 thousand to worship in the church or go out to preach on the streets and handle people cursing you while also trying to reason with a fool all i see is arogance and pride from this video and we know pride leads to a fall if Christianity is truly like this it only proves we are a failed and dead religion the proves there are more in hell than heaven and might as well accept your fate since its easier to die than become a Christian we as Christians who take our apostles teaching are supposed to make it easy for others to enter for you do not know what day a person will die so if it takes 3 years to become a Christian or 10 you might as well say they are in hell if they die prior to that so many denomination are established because one wants to be correct were supposed to venerate saints and worship God and preserve our teaching to those who want to learn more of the faith.
If i made you hopeless i want people to know that were all one in Christ our clothes or items dont give us the right to say who is and who isnt the only thing we need to know is do you read pray and worship and OBEY GOD lip service and saying a bunch of ethereal words dont do nothing to get you to heaven our Lord's sacrifice on the cross is what gets us in.
If you wish to help leave the cathedrals/temples and preach the gosple like Crist commands us. For even paul said death came through the law in Romans 7 it speaks of it.

I grew up going to the concert churches and I’m gonna tell all of you who’re making assumptions… you’re pretty spot on.
It just feels empty and exhausting, not to mention they have you getting up stupidly early so they can fit in all the music stars. And although I still love me some Stephen Crowder, I definitely was not wholly worshiping God when screaming the lyrics and jumping up and down to ‘Weary Sinner.’

The problem is that many historical places of worship have been taken over by liberals who stamp the Bible for the worlds approval, so in many cases Protestants flee to contemporary areas leading to a worship culture like a rock band (which I think doesn’t at all picture Gods glory)

I'm Catholic and I agree. Lots of Protestant denominations especially American ones are just a flat out mockery of Christianity. They are going for a good time and a party. You'd nearly forget what the purpose of worship is about.
Traditional Latin and Orthodox mass is the celebration of the life, death and Resurrection of Christ.
