    I felt so alone in my “picky eating” struggles. My parents used to tell me “if you don’t eat this, you’ll starve!”
    And starve I did. I would rather starve to the point of hospitalization instead eating things like celery or chili. This isn’t picky eating.
    My thoughts around food are black and white. Something is either good or ABSOLUTELY REPULSIVE.

    • @skylamei
      @skylamei Před 3 lety +10

      Thank you! It’s not picky eating... and I always got so offended when called that my entire life, because I didn’t choose to have these “picks” I didn’t pick them lol. It’s a terrifying feeling trying new things and it’s even worse when absolutely nobody understands. Mealtimes were so stressful... not being able to leave the table because you couldn’t finish your tomato soup, sitting there crying to the point of throwing up. But yeah no, totally chose to be like that.

      @@skylamei I was diagnosed with arfid 2 years ago, and my mother had to force me to eat for many years. In particular, i absolutely hated rice. I couldn't stomach the taste of rice at all. I would hide food, leading to a really bad roach problem.
      I'm 21 now and i eat better, but i still struggle with the amount i eat, and thinking food is unnecessary. I've been drinking milk and protein shakes for many years, as a means of gaining nutrition without having to eat. I like soup, meat, and crackers as well.
      It's not just not liking certain foods, It's a fear of choking, extreme textural avoidance (amplified by my aspergers), and a view that food is unnecessary at times.

      true, using fear as a tool for control just doesn't work on some people. notice, “if you don’t eat this, you’ll starve!” is trying to force you to do a certain action out of fear. this tactic is commonly used by the government as well "take the vaccine or die" "pay taxes or go to jail" people have no idea how to deal with those who are content with accepting the consequences. we live in a fear based society and that's slowly starting to change. fear is constantly being used to control others in this system.

      I'm a little confused by this doc. Since the age of about 5 I completely stopped eating all Veg and fruits, along with some other foods such as fish. I'm not even sure why I'm so afraid of food, (the fear of throwing up maybe?). Every time I've tried certain fruits or veg, it's either the taste or texture that I just can't deal with. What I'm struggling to understand, is some people are going on about the fear of choking, which has never been an issue for me? Is Arfid the fear of dying, or just the fear of food itself for whatever reason?

    I always felt like I was the only one! I stopped eating after choking a few times as a kid. Became under weight and was threatened by doctors about feeding tubes. I I remember wanting to eat but It didn’t matter because the fear was so prevalent that I don't even remember ever feeling hungry. My parents would buy me junk food and stuff to bribe me, but I think the best I could do was lick the salt off the fry or try to chew and end up spitting it back out. My problems didn’t resolve themselves until I had my adenoids and tonsils removed at age 9. It made a huge difference, but I can’t lie and say I chew normally. I’m 23 now and still get mocked for taking like 90 bites before swallowing. I never really noticed how strange it was or how that’s probably because of what happened to me as a kid.

      And my cousin’s child who is 12 years old has arfid. Severe case. He can’t even see others eating, and guess what he has older and younger siblings who eat everything and anything. He only drinks. He never ate or chew any type of food in his life.

    Now, at 31, my eating issues are less about weight, and more about feeling in control of my life, and feeling safe.
    Going to the supermarket stresses me out bc its like...there are foods that i can't even look at bc they give me anxiety, so I'll have to stick to specific items. Going off the track of what i allow myself to eat kind of makes me worry that I'm "out of control" with my life.

    One of my sons is mild aspergers type and has had sensory issues all his life. We have been very patient and reassuring towards him and he has developed high tolerances towards many things he finds difficult, including foods. He was always told he should at least try it. If he didn't like it, we would try again a couple of months later. He will now eat a number of things he is not keen on just because he knows they're beneficial. Every person is different and manages their issues and anxieties differently but giving in to a phobia entirely is not always a solid course of action. It doesn't challenge the perceptions and give logic an opportunity to overcome emotion.

    I would not eat hardly anything as a toddler. My mom made me sit with my meals until I finished them if I said yuck then she'd only cook that same meal repeatedly. If I didn't finish dinner by 10 pm she'd serve it again to me cold for breakfast. Her logic food is not just for your personal enjoyment it's to get enough nutrition to thrive. She would sit at the end of the table while I fussed with my food and monologue about how foolish, selfish and childish I was being by being picky. She would talk all the while rapping her finger nails across the table in a menacing fashion. She said pickiness was akin to weakness and none of her children were going to be weak on her watch. My mom is a scary unyielding woman she doesn't yell or scream but she will get her way. So I broke at ate normally after about a 2 week's. lol She still scares me though and I'm grown.

      My parents were similar. As soon as we could eat solid food we'd be served steamed veg (generally the same dinner my parents were having) and we were fed that every single day, more or less, from the age of about 6-7 months old. Liquefied baby food just wasn't an option; Mum would just simplify what she was having and give it to us as babies. As we grew older we couldn't leave the dinner table till we'd finished our meal and we were never given another option (i.e. if you don't eat this then I'll give you a sandwich instead). We ate what our parents cooked, and that was it; we were never given any other choice. If you didn't finish, you sat at the dinner table by yourself till it was done, and if that took too long, you were sent to bed and had to eat it cold the next day. No dessert or sweets until you'd finished your main meal. Fast food (e.g. getting a takeaway) was always a rare, special treat that the whole family got to enjoy, rather than being classed as 'kid's food'.
      It worked - there's not a single fussy eater in my family. We all eat everything, bar one or two minor dislikes. When I have children, I'll do the same thing. If you don't give the child the option of junk food over healthy food - don't buy it, don't have it in the house, don't offer it as an alternative - then they're not going to know any different.

      If there is a fear of choking that is a result of gagging on food, then it should be checked out with an MRI for a Chiari malformation. This is where the cerebellar tonsils from the brain herniate slightly. It can cause a gag reflex. I have low lying cerebellar tonsils and get a gag reflex, but I would have never know if I hadn't had an MRI for something else.

    We would always say my son was a picky eater from the time he started eating solids. It wasn't until he was 14 that we learned that he had esinophilic esophagitis (EOE). Certain foods (most veggies, legumes - included soy, & nuts) cause an over production of esinophilic and causes his throat to constrict. It explained his food avoidance, his vomiting frequently, and his desire to stand while eating. Now that we know it's a medical condition, it took a lot of stress off both of us and we found solutions. (AND learned that soy is in almost everything! ugh)

    When I was young I had a fear of eating things because I was scared of choking on them. My mum told me my throat was the size of my pinky which is stupid to believe but I was a child. She kept warning me about choking and dying. When I was 3 or 4, I choked on a grape and apparently turned purple but I don't remember it. I had tonsillitis when I was 9 and my throat felt swollen because it was. After getting them removed though, I still felt them there like a phantom limb. I took forever to eat, Had to chew things so much until they were mush. Wouldn't eat because I was scared to swallow and food would get stuck or something. Chewed a lot of food to pretend I was eating and then spat it out in a tissue or excused myself to go to the bathroom. It happened too often that I got in trouble a lot. So much frustration, shouting, tears etc. My parents didn't understand and thought I was being fussy. Was kicked out of the house when I was maybe 10, in the middle of the night at one point because I was taking too long.
    I'm not sure what happened but eventually I did learn to eat normally. I still have trouble with some food though (I don't like swallowing oysters or anything whole) and swallowing pills is hard but it gets easier the more you practice.

  • @TiffanyLaurelY

    I kind of feel like this is definitely a product of western “divide and conquer marketing,” (typical in U.S., U.K., Aus., etc, where’s there shitty unhealthy foods marketed as “kid’s food” vs. “adult food,” adult food just being balanced, normal meals), and parents allowing their kids from a young age to eat the “kid’s food,” instead of the healthy balanced meals the adults are eating as well. If you have your kid just eat what the adults are eating (as they should) from a young age, I don’t think this would be a problem. I only notice this fussy type anxiety-ridden eating in people who let their kids eat crappy, processed foods like chicken nuggets, French fries, frozen pizza and stuff like that as an alternative to what the parents are eating for dinner (notice how it’s always unhealthy, bland, processed foods the fussy eaters are comfortable with?). A lot of cultures just expect their kids to eat what everyone else in eating, and I’m making an assumption (yes, it’s an assumption, I could be totally wrong) that these kids don’t grow up saying “ew, I won’t touch a vegetable,” or “I only eat French fries.” This is all excluding the fear of choking disorder - that seems purely like it stems from anxiety and is nobody’s fault. Though, I do think there is ALSO underlying excessive anxiety in the “fussy” eaters as well, so I’m sympathetic to that.

      Tippy I had the opposite of that problem but it wasn’t so much as me refusing to eat. Growing up I ate primarily vegetarian and Filipino, but then I started living with my dad and he ate very processed american food and even now I have this cycle where I will eat some junk foods but then I immediately have to have a fruit or veggie. It’s like my body will crave it until I have it. Really weird. Im thankful however, because I will always love food that I know is good fuel for my body.

      I was wondering the same thing because so far my child hasn't developed that pickiness not wanting real food or trying foods but I see so many parents say their kids only eat nuggets or fries etc but I decided early on before my son was born that we would try baby led weaning after I heard about it in a video and then researched it I decided that was the path we would go we started at 4 months which most people think it's horrible and unnatural to start feeding solids at such a young age and yes some kids can't start that early and 6 months is generally the safest to avoid choking and reactions to food, but most parents only feed baby foods for so long and then introduce real food in the toddler years and they think oh they don't know how to eat give them something easy , nuggets , finger foods that are quick and fast to cook for a hungry crying toddler also when we go out to eat and my son is using utensils and eating what we eat at 1 and children older than him are just sat in the high chair getting fruit packs or little bits of bread or fries it's sad to see that most children don't know how to feed them selves, a recent outing he was "hangry" and bread was the fastest thing to get there so we handed him that and he likes bread but then my salad came and he started screaming again and we're scrambling to figure out what he wants and a fork was one of them and salad was the other and I know people will say it's BS but this 1 year old is sat at his high chair munching on salad happily, he eats meats, fish , veggies fruits but he also likes pizza and cookies like any kid but dinner we've always given him what we had, so long story long I really believe the old fashioned mindset and standards of when and how to start solids needs to be changed

This happens when parents let their kids eat what they grow comfortable with instead of making them eat what the family eats or what they need to. My family forced us to stay at the table to finish our food no matter what and if you didnt like it you had to take a thank you bite. Its so easy to introduce different foods to kids so they don't develop this. These kids are sad

      Maisie P D If I started thinking about what might be in my food, besides my food, I would get crazy XD Food from factories is actually worse to me than vegetables and fruit. Because those you can wash or peel the outside. With canned, bagged or potted food, there could be bits and pieces of insects or rodents in there, and you would never know (unless it’s big chunks, but I mean I a tiny mouse hair, or spider leg, isn’t really that noticeable); I’ve heard they even have a certain percentage of ‘insects’ they can’t exceed, so like, it might have 0.03% insect, but that might be still be sold (don’t know the exact ‘safe’ percentage) XD
      So I don’t think about it. People in other countries eat insects as food; I’m just being a bit of a spoiled brat if an insect is going to stop me, because they’re not poisonous or anything. It’s just my mind that tells me it’s yucky. So I ‘trick’ my mind by not even considering it, I think about other stuff. What it can’t think about, it can’t get disgusted by, haha!
      I’m the other way with textures. I love potatoes, but hate them mashed. Just like with watery soup. If it’s food, I want to be able to chew it, if I can’t, it tastes a lot less nice for some reason.
      Have you tried raw vegetables? Like carrots, cauliflower? There’s so many different vegetables and how to prepare them; I love them! Especially because I love to eat until my stomach feels like it’s bursting. With trying to have at least half of my meal consist of vegetables, it means I don’t pile on the pounds by eating ‘big’ portions :D

I have started trying to keep the lettuce in my cheeseburger when going to mc Donalds, and I'm managing to do it a bit, but I've had about 8 of them with lettuce since trying 2 years ago and still really hate the taste and texture. @@liam4184 Stop trying to force yourself to eat fruits and vegs if you don't like them - they're not even that healthy for you anyway and most have more of the bad chemicals used to repel insects than other kinds of food. Most animals can live on a single type of food, humans are not special animals, we should be able to do the same - and in fact it is possible to live solely on potatoes or rice, for instance, among other foods. Humans are not meant to be eating such varied diets with things that only grow in specific places of the planet and in specific times of the year. We are supposed to have a narrow, local diet.

      Does your mom like meat at least?

    • @theemoturtle7002
      @theemoturtle7002 Před 4 lety +2

      @ thats all she eats besides some chocolate candy, and potato chips. If she wants something like a baked potato, she needs it to slathered in butter, cheese, and bacon. No chives, no sour cream, nothing but that. Peanuts? Forget about it unless it's in Reece's peanut butter cups. And I hate to say that it's my grandmas fault, but it is.
      She made my mom to believe that she is allergic to fruits and vegetables. So all that she ate from the age of 3-4 is a very restrictive diet.

    •  Před 4 lety

      @@theemoturtle7002 Well I study Nutrition and from what I've learned is that humans are adapted to eat a ketogenic diet. Which is high fat, moderate protein and low carb. Therefore it would make sense that she eats a lot meat, bacon, butter, cheese and cream. As all of these foods are actually part of our natural diet. Humans would only consume locally found fruits when they were in season and rarely ever eat any vegetables. So in a way, considering that humans are carnivores, it makes sense. Also peanuts are very allergenic since they are high in aflatoxins so its a good thing she's not eating them. And most vegetables taste bitter because they have antinutrients and plant toxins in them. Once again, you don't need fruits and veggies to be healthy.

    • @theemoturtle7002
      @theemoturtle7002 Před 4 lety

      @ I can understand that, but considering what she is eating, which are mostly fried meat, and not any food that is good for her like chips and sugary foods, like cookies, cake, and soft drinks, I can't honestly say she is healthy. I forgot to tell you what she drinks. All it is, is Pepsi. To the moment she wakes up, to when she falls asleep she has a Red Solo cup filled to brim with some sort of soft drink. Every week, we need to restock her supply, which is up to about 12/2 liters bottles.
      And I don't know what this diet is doing to her heart. It's common knowledge that an all meat diet is catastrophic to the heart, due to the high protein content. I want to believe that you are correct, and that my mom can be relatively healthy with this all meat diet, but I just don't see how you can call my mom healthy.
      I know you have never seen, or met my mother, thus never going to be able to make a 100% accurate diagnosis, but I don't believe that my mom is as healthy as you think.

    •  Před 4 lety

      @@theemoturtle7002 Well you are right that having lots of fried foods, sugary drinks and processed meats are very detrimental to one's health. However I must point out that an all meat diet can actually be very good for the heart, the protein thing you mentioned is a complete misconception. If the meat is high-quality, unprocessed, grass-fed beef, pasture-raised poultry or wild-caught fish/seafood. There is no problem. Don't blame the meat when its the vegetable oil, sugar and processed food's fault. Just try to get her to eat clean meats.

    My stepson was very much like this when I came into the picture. I had strict food rules though, no dinner until you've tried something new. A piece of lettuce, a shred of cheese, a slice of cucumber- simple little things, followed by praise and reward. At first he balked, but we stood by the rules and he went to bed hungry more than a few times. But we stood strong by the pediatrician's words- "they'll eat when they're hungry". Within 3mo, he was eating from and enjoying items from every food group. He was proud. Today, despite still being somewhat "picky", he'll try just about anything at least once.

    I eat most foods. But the preparation has to be just right. All meat has to be crunchy and dark brown. I love pasta but it can't have a mushy texture. Nothing can be mushy!!!... I don't like fruit and love Veggies. But they also have to be prepared just right. I like tomatoes, olives, carrots. a few others. I have always been picky about food. I am not crazy about sweets anymore. But I have never looked at this as a problem except with meat. If I order a hamburger and it is not dark brown and if it has juice in it I won't eat it. I hate soggy bread. I think most people are like this. At home, I put it one a paper towel and squeeze the juice from it. I just think it is the preparation of food that is important.
