The fact that 80% of people will experience substantial back pain at some point in their life I thought this video was crucial to make. There are several things covered here first the correct way to set up a neutral spine and brace before you lift. It might seem like common sense for a seasoned lifter but I guarantee you can learn something from this setup.
Next, we dive into the how and why of breathing during a lift. It's not as simple as the old adage "breath in during the negative, breath out during the positive", it's a lot more nuanced than that. Believe it or not, there are certain scenarios that you'll want to flip that around.
Finally, I cover how to fix your posture at any point during the day. And I can't reiterate how important this is. If you go through life with horrible posture then nothing you do in the gym will change that.
#fixposture #backproblem #backpain
Every time this guy uploads I know it’s an absolute unit of a video packed with value. The issue is that I end up with tears on my eyes from laughing my soul off. Thanks for putting yourself out there, G! ☝️♥️🤝
I don’t usually comment on videos. But I wanted to let you know that this video has changed my lifting game completely. My backsquat was horrible. I would usually throw weight on the bar, squat, and hope my back didn’t tweak in the process. I’ve hurt my back dozens of times in the gym over the years because of this. But your advice just changed my life. Externally twisting the feet, squeezing my butt, tightening my abs… it’s a whole new squat form that finally works my legs and not my lower back. Thank you so much.
I love these videos as a biomechanics professor. Information is 100% accurate and you make the content fun to learn.
Ryan you are HUGE! And thanks for this important video. I can attest to the importance of this as someone who's dealt with a whole lot of back problems.
Great video! I'm going to have to try this out. One of the biggest things that has helped me build muscle has been a custom meal plan from Next Level Diet. I use it every week and I love it!
Ryan Humiston is totally awesome!
Thank you so much for this thought provoking, informational, and educational video!
Respect the foundations of fitness!
I have already confirmed earlier on one of your other videos that I am following you, I think you are the one who appears the most honest and with a huge amount of knowledge about our anatomy, that is why I also bought your 30 day garage program in November 2022 to my great pleasure, yes I have problems with my back but it has improved since I started working out according to your instructions so thank you Ryan.
dude its insane. I remember watching some of your first few videos when u didnt have that many subs. I stopped going to the gym like 6 months ago so i stopped watching your content. Im come back and you are at almost 2 million subs. I love it and you deserve it. Thanks for educating us man.
This channel is amazing. I started watching it to get good advice on working out and proper lifts, but also keep coming back because the comedy in it is second to none.
Im currently rehabilitating after a road traffic collision (cause that's what we call them in the UK) and this is EXACTLY what my Physiotherapist told me last week.
Coming from both of you, who I deem to be reliable sources, I am definitely incorporating this advice into my life. Thanks.
Schizophrenia 😂
That sure is a fancy way to say car accident. I wish you a speedy recovery nonetheless.
Car crash brother! Hope the recovery goes well!
Fuck dude, me too
Check into inversion tables
Can we please get this man a few million more subscribers....How am I just now finding this guy! Literally epic content
I see Ryan finally got the certified check mark. Very much deserved. Dude has changed my life and I'm sure others can attest.
First fitness youtuber that I'll buy stuff from.
First I bought something from. And the program was great, definitively saw big progress.
GOAT fitness CZcams for sure. Ryan + KOTG are the best
I love the way you have evolved on the way you explain training techniques!!! You get more creative in every training/teaching session. Awesome job!!!
Love this informative video. Thank you sir. I’m saving this one.
I’m loving the new program you put out!
Incredible information! Thank you Ryan!
Great video with spot on info Ryan! Thx for putting this out there!!
Thx Ryan, can’t wait for your next workout to come out. Thus far great workout
Great Channel Ryan, humor, science, and your experience is obvious. I am soon to be 55 , currently rehabbing rotator cuff post surgery, looking forward to your programming.. thank you for the Free videos on YT for now..
Honestly your content is incredible. I was doinh calisthenics focused workouts for a long time until I came across your channel. Was inspired to get back to bodybuilding style training focusing on making lighter weights feel heavy and I've started growing like crazy. Plus, no joint pain. Plus I only do 30 minutes 4 days a week and I'm getting results. Amazing actually. Painful when training, but amazing.
Yes. I started lifting just fine. Learning form on CZcams in the early days. What I missed was the pelvis tuck. This took years away from me. I know many gym goers who have back pain. It’s usually the bracing which no one really talks about.
ryan . please never change . these are the best educational videos ever
Love your videos. Feel like I learn and am entertained more than any other fitness creator.
Brother I’m a chiropractor and love love love this post. Fantastic job. Plus I leaned a few new things. Thank you
Ryan, mate, you have gotten big !! been watching you for a very long time now and you have grown heaps in the last 6 months.
actually one of the most and only fitness youtube channel i watch. Good job sir!
abso-friggin-lutely hilarious.. some of the best content, and delivery, on the interwebs
I definitely need to work on my anterior pelvic tilt. Definitely has my lower back hurting. This video is legit
Nice- and appreciated the part about abdominal breathing and the lumbar spines’s position during breathing! So many people don’t know this
Waow😮a lot of informative information Ryan! Outstanding! Thank you. Hope you have a good day 😊
Funny, informative and entertaining. You have some of the best videos to watch on CZcams.
Thank you for this information. Ask 5 guys in the gym on how they protect their back during lifts and you get 5 different answers! Probably not going to be your most viewed video but makes people come back for more because you are being sincere in being a source of information as opposed to clickbait.
Great tips and advice 👌 thanks
I'm on week 1 of the new Backed By Science plan. Keep up the good work bro
Most underrated fitness health youtuber
man your videos are the best. Love the humour mixed with the knowledge and science 🙌😂
informative, fun, and functional. Easiest subscribe ive done
I'm 31 and have two herniated discs in my lower back since I was 19. Doing Stuart McGill's excesses really helped me
Dude, this content is brilliant I wish more people could appreciate it
Fantastic video. Thanks.
Amen bro... keep up the great info and helping us... i definitely need to follow this, i never do this ourside the gym
6 back surgeries and the Doctor I got to fix my back surgery. I am completely blessed I prayed and prayed and many others as well. I’m using peptides at the moment . It completely has healed my bicep. Lifting heavy is just stupid because you’re going to ruin your back. I lift weights with lighter weight and I grow or trim up just the same. More reps and more sets that simple.
appreciate your insight and writing - informative and hilarious
Just snagged the new program. Love the new video feature included with every exercise. I have looked for years for a program like this and here it is. Thank you for all your hard work, dedication and hilarious one liners 👍
Could I ask which one you're doing and how you like it so far? Was thinking of doing the 30 day garage one, just looking to get some opinions from people that have actually tried them
@@ps1538 his back by science program. It's very different from other workout, which is why I like it so much. Give that one a try. Can be for novice to advanced lifters. Good luck
Excellent information in a fun and relatable presentation style. The only thing I could find wrong with any of it was the title. 😉 Lots of people are talking about it, but most are ineffective in communicating it. These are every day conversations with my patients, especially with my lifters. Keep up the quality content. Thanks for posting.
the transitions never cease to amaze me!
You are the best. You have a career in stand up if you want. Thank you for the info you provide!!
At 57 I've been fortunate to never ever have a back problem. My workouts are focused on keeping a good amount of muscle in my back and that seems to help keep the spine in alignment.
That is nice, how long do you that?
Love your videos, informative and funny as hell.
Thank you so much 🫶
DUDE WTF!!! Yesssss!!! I’ve freaking needed this for so long. I had been doing this by just kind of winging it and glad to know I’m doing it well.
The new program is wonderful
Holy sheet that was a good one. You need to post more often, Ryan. Great content
Great video, Ryan! I discuss a lot of these facts with patients on a daily basis. Just to piggy back on some things you said:
With your cue for hip external rotator activation via locking your feet into the ground, id add to make sure you have the 3 points of contact of your foot on the ground, otherwise you can excessively supinate whioe squatting if you're limited with hip or ankle mobility
Id substitute the phrase "muscularly unstable" for out of alignment in regards to the spine, otherwise people hear that and run to a chiro. Inability to maintain posture and form is a product of poor agonist/antagonist strength relationships and mobility that compounds with time.
Lastly, id be cautious with exaggerated curvatures with that last maneuver you showed. If someone has a "broken dog's neck" spondy and pushes into that it could be news bears.
Love your work!
Bro……!!! You had me F$&@in rollin when I got home from work just now! Your video was my first choice today. Keep rockin bud!
amazing video. As always.
man you lierally changed my life! I can't find a workds how thankful I'm.
Also thanks to you I found my passion in making home workout videos. It actually sucks but I enjoy the porcess and hope to become great influencer one day
As a colleague sport scientist and a S&C coach, your naration style is absolutely fucking spot on
Incredible lad. I’m getting the program
Thank you.
Another great educational and entertaining video! Your videos are so funny, I have to rewatch them!
On another note: any news on the app (or did I miss something somewhere while snorting coffee through my nose?)
Thank you
As someone with 7 bad disc, this is a well appreciated video. Thanks brother
I like you vids highly informative yet simple
I practically unalived myself doing lat pulldown last May. Still recovering and can’t lift heavy, but if I’d seen this vid would have definitely saved me from the three weeks of walking bent over literally bowing to everyone.
Alex Bromley has a great video on bracing and how practice it. Two part on atp fix.
Great this guy is back to make fun of my back fat. Love these videos keep it up Ryan. Funny and actually educational.
Finally someone is else teaching this. I have been trying to teach people this stuff for YEARS! But I'm just a Chiropractor, what do I know.
I got a herniated disc in my C6/C7 last year. It was by a wide margin the most painful and depressing period of my life until i got it replaced. Great video…
One of the most informative and funniest videos to date.
I love this video as a chiropractor. Flexibility will also help prevent injuries too.
Hahah every video you make it so great !!! I have every workout you have made !
I live for your videos, please upload more please
Nice vid Dr. Mantis
Hey Ryan,
In case you were too busy to notice. That looks like 1.61 million subscribers underneath your name. My congratulations to you and that undoubtedly is well-deserved my friend.
Glad you asked that question.....😆😆😆 Brilliant info and humour. I'm 49 and just learning lifting. Great content 👍
Just wanted to say I've recently purchased your backed by science program and running it with my brother ... god damn it's intense I''ve never ached like this for years! Good job, it's definately worth it!
I love the Roman chair to work out my lower back, I learned it from Ben Patrick.
Would love to see these to guys collaborate one day
I wish all gym teachers or health professors was like you sir
Erector Spinae... as soon as I learned how to make the "mind to muscle" connection there I changed my life.
Thank you, as an Exercise Physiologist I approve this message.
Golden 😊😊
Thank you 🙏
Great video. I think to add to this issue, is just the sheer amount of people lifting too heavy in these exercises. Dial back your weight until the form is ideal and the movements are slow and controlled. So many dont do that.
Yep, careful weight loads until you get form down then go heavy
Excited
100% this. As a 40-something that spent his 20s and 30s either sitting at a desk job or sitting gaming on PC, I had no idea the damage I was doing. I've since slipped my L5/S1 disc twice, which forces you to address your back and, subsequently, how you train. I get the absolute fear of watching people in the gym trying to deadlift 100kg with a spine looking like the marble arch or doing an overhead press with massive hyper-extension of the hips and not pushing their head through their arms. All because they think heavier = better.
How did you recover from your disc injuries?
@@jeratparrino I didn’t know what had happened for a week. I have a manual lawn mower (one that works by pushing it), and on Sunday, I noticed my back was quite stiff after gardening. By the next day, I was in agony. I’d suffered periodic back spasms generally lasting one or two days. A week later, I made a Chiro appt and was sent for an X-Ray and MRI the same day.
Turns out that a lifetime of sitting on my ass playing games and working had shrunk my L5 disc, I’d lost 2mm off it, and it herniated pretty severely. I had four months of solid chiro appts, 3 days/week. I had a strict routine of icing my back for 8, then walking in the garden for 5, then lying on the floor for anand hour, then repeating. I must have watched all 7 seasons of SoA on Netflix. I was gradually allowed to work 30%, 50, 70, and 90, then full-time over 5 or 6 weeks. After 3 months, I was sent to a physio specialising in pressure point therapy. He’d work on my spine for 10 mins, then followed by 20 mins of Core and Psoas work (that had me sweating more than I did at CrossFit). All in it was probably 6 months until I was back in the gym. Even then, I was absolutely terrified the first time I did a deadlift.
The second time I did it by getting out of bed. I knew as soon as I sat up I’d done it again. It wasn’t as severe, and I already had a library of exercises from before, so I started rehab immediately. I also went back to the gym a lot sooner. As I was more confident in my exercise form, I just stuck to really light weights, and I’m sure it helped to speed up my recovery.
I still do McKenzie exercises as a kind of preventative.
The best on CZcams hands down.
Honestly this guy is not only super knowledgeable, jacked but absolutely f@#king hilarious, could actually make it as a stand up comedian. Awesome content sir, thank you, now I'm going to locate my 3rd ball.
Awesome as always. How do you feel about the theory behind the CoolMitt?
As A D.C., I approve this message. 👍
There is a bit more re imbibision, disc height, and proper alignment of the facet joints (the true weight bearers of the spine) for safe loading. 😉
Wish i saw this video 10 years ago. Very informative.
@RyanHumiston i freaking love your new program "Backed By Science" i beg you do similar one with body weight aka calisthenics exercises
I like it for the info but I love it cause of the attitude
Started the new trainer this week and it is awesome!!!
Very helpful for 29 year old sods like me with Old Man Back Syndrome.
Love that always sunny reference.
Hello! I feel confident that I already do this. How strict are you with this and does it apply to all stuff? I recall a video were you intentionally had lower weights and bad posture on a lat pulldown with V handle, did you stop doing those?
This guy is hilarious 😂 glad I found this channel!
Honestly one of the most important things about lifting. This should be the first lesson to young lifters.
😂😂😂 I have a hard time retaining your information, and taking the video seriously. I get an ab workout from watching your vids. But I love your content and love your informative videos while keeping it entertaining!
gotta love your humor
