1945 RAF Emergency Rations & 1900 British Perfectly Preserved Tin Review MRE Tasting Test
Vložit
- čas přidán 1. 09. 2020
- A double feature - the first half is British Royal Air Force rations from 1945. The Emergency Flying Ration Type 3, and the Emergency Ration Type P. (This scene was filmed November 2018.) Then after these two rations another two tins are shown from a 1945 Compo (10 man) ration, and a Mess Tin Ration component (Which include some microscope shots making for an aimlessly colorful particle show of unknown non-living and some potentially living bacterial matter.) After these, we then take a look at a special sealed can from circa 1900, going back in time with something perfectly preserved and truly unforgettable. Finishing up with some long winded historical ramblings and a look at 120 + years in British Rations, including some incredibly old (and bloomed) chocolate . Come join me in this outrageous journey through history!

Whenever Steve takes a bite and says "hmm...", it's a 50/50 shot whether it'll be followed by "that...is pure, delicious decadence" or "that...tastes like rancid, foul botulism". Either way, he's eatin' it. God bless you Steve.
Hah, precisely!
Nice channel, btw.
Didn't expect to see you here. When are you two gonna make a colab?

The fact this man opened a perfectly preserved 120yr can of cigarettes just for us... Is absolutely astonishing. Thank You.
I thought I read somewhere that he doesn't open anything unless he has a duplicate to preserve.
That is by far one of, if not THE, coolest things I have ever seen on this channel, I am SO unbelievably jealous and in awe. Simply amazing.

@John Wolfe welp hello person with a flag that is overly racist
@John Wolfe lol shut up John, you're adding nothing of value here
"That smells really fruity and rancid" - Steve takes second bite. "Oh yeah that's rancid" - Steve picks up a third piece and eats it.
Exactly I don’t think we have the same definition of rancid. Rancid to me means don’t eat its expired but seeing him eat it I’m like well never mind then.
@@TooMuchMiracle Well, as someone who's eaten something rancid, its not like it'll hurt you if you're eating a small amount but. It does taste pretty awful.
@@coffeebuticed Given some foods actually go for the 'rancid' taste, I guess there's a level.
But does he take the tablets in order to do so many videos?
I feel like when Steve smokes the vintage cigarettes, he takes a step back from the actual review and begins to just share his vast knowledge of history and and why he appreciates the complexities of mre's. It's like a one on one time with Steve.
Wish he did more like that
Yup, I love when Steve has a smoke 🚬!
He dropped his charade. He's immortal and he was reminiscing. We all know it now.
Yes...that part of the video was surreal for me. Let's not forget there is more to the video than just the cigarette experience. Steve also tried the biscuits and also tried the Barley Sugar Molasses Candies.
I really enjoyed his smoking ramble.
Nobody's ever been cooler than when this guy was smoking a 120 year old cigarette stating historical facts. Love it.
Smoking isn't cool anymore, but Steve is cool whatever he does.
Agreed. My kind of man 💕
He's just a very smart chad with the most resistant stomach ever.
I think if I smoked a 120yr old cigarette, I would probably do so whilst leaning on a huge mantelpiece above a roaring fire, and I would stare off in to the distance and quote some Chaucer whilst I smoke.
Cigarettes cause cancer... But I'll make an exception for Steve, nothing will hurt Steve except Coffee Instant type I

@Devin Storm
Haha Steve was instantly transported. xD
Devin Storm right like an instant high. He went off on a side road and eventually came back but I wasn’t sure for a minute where he was going with the video.
For real tho this man is doing some of the most in-depth documentation of these historical items that anyone will ever do. Without these videos no one would ever know what these MRE's would have looked like back then or some of them could have been completely lost in time. It's so cool to have an archive of all these things presented in such a nice and comfortable tone.
The videos aren't the end of it either. He meticulously photographs, and documents the contents for the rarer stuff. For some of these rations, Steve has the only detailed information on them, besides some grainy black and white photos, buried in a national archive somewhere.
Its truly brilliant stuff he does 😊
Man has VAST knowledge of these subjects it's inspiring me to learn more.
Back in the days when I still smoked, I found a celophane sealed pack of Players Navy Cut cigarettes that were decades old, and had to try them. They were the smoothest and most full flavoured cigarettes I had ever smoked. Made the Dunhills I was smoking at the time taste like lawn clippings 😄. Fascinating video. Cheers
worked with a guy that bought a massive box of old smokes from the 1960's. They were these rich clove cigarettes that were perfectly preserved. amazing flavor.
there's something to be said about the times when we hadn't quite figured out how to cut every corner in making things like cigarettes. While far from being good for you, I'd be willing to bet that they're far better than what comes in a pack today. At least they weren't tailor made to maximize addiction and profit, that was the marketing department's job lol.
I have a a wooden handled handrill that came from my grandfather. The top of the handle unscrews so you could store small drill bits inside. However, there is perfectly preserved cigarette in there. My grandfather smoked a pipe, so I wonder why he stored a cigarette in his handrill handle. By the look of it, it is probably a manufactured cigarette, goodness knows how old it is. My grandfather died in 1974 and it was probably in there for years before then.
Glad you stopped smoking!
When I was a smoker I smoked Players Navy Cut as my smoke. Filterless and strong... a MAN'S CIGARETTE ... anyway they stopped making them in 2016. You can still buy the Players Navy Cut pipe tobacco though

Sometimes I imagine people, in the future, studying hole new subjects, or old subjects in new ways. They will be going through old youtube videos as if they were odd, individually-funded researches; a cool history professor will be showing this to a class of young students, and say "yeah, thus guy just smoked a 120years old cigarette, like it was nothing... and gave a whole history lesson while doing it."

That was truly an amazing hiss for any package, let alone something so old.
Omg! I said Nice Hiss! Those are going to be delicious!

omg dude.. I can't thank you enough for opening those 120 year old cigarettes and sharing that historic moment with all of us!!! I can't get over the pristine condition they were in, and don't get me started on that hiss... just incredible!!! I get like a "history orgasm" just thinking about EVERYTHING that can has seen and been through lol! It's honestly like a miracle that it even still EXISTS!
Like bro.. you opening that can and releasing air that hasn't been exposed since the end of the 1800's- from a time when people still rode horse and buggy, in the waning days of when the west was still wild, the second industrial revolution, and over a decade before the Titanic sank, the completion of the Panama Canal, and the START of the First World War- and then seeing that inside metal shine and see the light of day for the first time in over 100 years, not to mention that perfect card sitting on top was almost too much for me- like for real, that sight was meant for people who lived over 100 years ago and thanks to you, all of us were able to see it too! It was an honor and really almost too much for words- just spectacular! I can't thank you enough for that.. keep up the great work man, LOVE ur vids!!!
P.S. those Queen Victoria tins are equally next level! I've seen them before but NEVER with the freakin chocolate still inside and intact!!! Like Jesus, that's legendary shit man! I'm really jealous... but hey, you think I can bum a stoge? lmao
Never thought that I would watch someone trying old combat rations for nearly 45 minutes, but that was great! Thank you for showing us! 👍

Before his grand father likely.

There wasn’t a single human that is alive today around when that cigarette was made. There was an entirely different set of people when it was made
Deamn this is deep
There were people alive then whose parents and grandparents might have been born before the US existed. Mad!
And the most sadly, they paid cheap 😞
(Enter X-Files music)
Right!? That was really amazing! I was thinking the same!
Steve talking about the rations throughout the wars reminded me of my Grandfather telling me about my great grandfather. My great grandfather was in the Australian Army for years. He had lived off of powdered foods for all that time, so when they would have it at home (Australia soon after WW2, still recovering), he just refused to eat it.
That was an incredible video. You are what makes CZcams awesome. Loved the combination of education, experiencing the artifacts, helping us to see how and why shelf stable foods are important, and your own unique personality
24:15 that is absolutely the best hiss i've ever heard on a Steve1989MRE video to this day. Top Hiss, speed pills, stained-color images of Tea of Bacterial Death, and 120 year old smokes. You are a national treasure, sir. Thank you for your nostalgic trek back to a time we love to hear about and showing us a piece of its history.
It's weird but your filming yourself opening these artifacts (and ingesting their contents) actually allows more people to observe and appreciate these historical items than if they were displayed in a museum. Incredible content.
I think that's why he does it. He does his best to preserve certain packaging that he knows there aren't many in museums.
How is that wierd tho..?
He brings it all to life. So many times more interesting than just watching the items. Even if Steve himself was doing the presentation without opening and trying this out it would be far less interesting since there would be no real experience to share.

For some reason, I'm getting visions of a life-raft being propelled like a speedboat over the choppy waters of the English Channel, powered by a collection of impressively wired RAF crewmen, pipes clasped manfully in their teeth. while being futilely pursued by half the German Navy.
All while the theme to Hawaii 5-0 plays in the background. 🤣
I haven't visited this channel for a good while. I watch this video and see that Steve now has almost 1.8 million subs, 1.2 million views on this video alone ... and nothing else has changed. Maybe the MREs are a bit more expensive, but Steve's the same, format's the same. I love it.
This dude seriously just opened a $700 can of cigarettes nice flex my man some people smoke expensive Cuban cigars some people prefer century-old navy cigarettes
