This is what documentaries should be, delivered straight and without hysteria. Documentaries as we know them today have this tendency to overplay everything and try to push an opinion on you with sensationalist language and paints everything in broad strokes. This could easily have simply screamed "isn't he a monster! What a scary man, oooooooooohhhhhhhh", but this was a lot darker and more disturbing because it's matter of factness gives it a terrible reality.

He was able to evade capture, not by his cleverness (although he was clever) but because the police force (west yorks) esp the top brass were nothing short of useless, Holland was well known for framing folk, Oldfield took the letters and tape as a challenge to him so ignored the truth no matter the cost. the only officer on the case with half a brain was Andrew Laptew who was ignored by Holland for his ideas, mainly as he never spoke with a geordie accent.

He was from Sunderland, and people from Sunderland aren't Geordies (Geordies being natives of Tyneside, not Wearside where Sunderland is). And Hooky tells an amazing story about the cops coming to talk to him. The band had been playing shite dive bars in the red light district. The murders were all occurring in these areas so their band van had been spotted all over. They thought Hooky was the Ripper! The whole story is much better than my humble description. I love all things Northern. Long live Madchester. Why, dear God, was I born in America?

To say something in the heat of the moment like 'I'll kill her when she gets home' only to have the copper on the door go 'Well...you won't have to...someone's done it for you.' Typical blunt Yorkshire...pretty callous really...to be honest, even though I wouldn't go as far as society 'made' the ripper, I believe it is the kind of somewhat callous and blinkered society in which Sutcliffe moved that aided him in committing his crimes for so long. That...and the half arsed bureaucracy that sprung up over the ripper murders.

They talked about how a Japanese TV crew who came to the area to report on the cases were absolutely shocked by the nastiness from locals towards the victims. Support for the Ripper also appeared in football chants. Absolutely unbelievable looking back. In the case of Nilsen, the hatred towards gay men was massive. The police were actively antagonistic and it seems that some of the victims families were more upset by the thought that their sons may have been gay than the fact they'd been murdered.
i wasn't familiar with this case but i was watching the ripper on netflix and thought immediately first episode "why do they think he hates ladies of the night" i kept shaking my head saying "he hates women in general" ladies of the night were just easy targets cuz it was night time and they took risks trying to make money... even sutcliffe said this in 81 "I had the urge to kill any woman. The urge inside me to kill girls was now practically uncontrollable." but what do u expect? the serial killer thing wasn't as known then and it was just starting to become a thing...
