*Construction seemed sturdier than other units I considered **MyBest.Tools** Noise level was reasonable. Good pressure and cfm capacity for a small reasonably light compressor.*
*After years of hauling around a large,💫 **allabout.wiki/PORTER** heavy, loud dewalt air compressor (that ironically was advertised as quiet, supposedly 78dB), I bought this. Facepalm. While it is not ‘silent’, I find myself chuckling every time I use it, sparing all my neighbors the terror of my former compressor. I use for inflating tires, impact wrench, finish nailers. Absolutely love it. And I store it under the garage sink in a 24” cabinet. I paired with a coil 1/2”, instead of a my former 50’ 5/8” hose that I had to lug across the yard from the shed, unpleasantly uncoil.... this little guy is light and portable; just a joy. Impact wrench is still capable of easing lug bolts, flywheel bolts, crank pulleys... just allow for a tiny bit of recovery now and then.*
Finally! There must be 100 videos out here talking about their compressors and you're almost the only one that actually shows one running so one can compare how much noise they make! I mean, how do all these guys find 20 minutes worth of crap to talk about and never even turn it on?!
Thank you for your comment 👍🏼
Its July 27 2019...nearly two years after you posted this. I just watched your review and I'm convinced this is the compressor I'll buy tomorrow. Got the 25% off discount running all weekend. Thank you for your informative review. It helped me.
Shopping too. Wish I could use it lol.
Great vídeo review! Thank you for sharing
Thank you 👍🏼 Check out the 1 year review of this air compressor czcams.com/video/uRob0E1bau4/video.html
Here's something interesting I noticed and posted on another video that reviewed the 61489 29 gallon air compressor. HF has two 29 gallon air compressors (61489 & 62765). The website description has the identical specs for both of them - 7.3 cfm @ 40 psi and 5.9 cfm @ 90 psi. But, on YOUR 61489 compressor box it states 7.5 cfm @ 40 psi and 6.4 cfm @ 90 psi. That's a lot better and would make a difference when doing HVLP painting or media blasting. I guess I better check the boxes before I just pick any 29 gallon air compressor and pick the part number that has the higher air output like yours. I'm glad I ran across your video. Thanks for posting it.
different product numbers with HF means different manufacturers both with the same specs, apparently the product specs for this compressor were revised to lower specs on newer lots. I am pretty sure some of the viewers will have a definitive answer to your question. Thank you for watching and posting your comment.
Thanks Ricky, for a superior video review!! I did the math, too, and thought I needed this for my shop (now I Know it is what I want!!), and was just waiting for it to go on sale.....It is ON SALE NOW at HFT until 1/20/2019 for just $329.99 !! (So much for the Chinese tariff BS!!)
Thank you for watching and posting your comment!
Nice.
I'm replacing a Campbell Hausfield that finally died after 20yrs. I'll renew my Inside Track Club membership to get a discount. Great walk through. No BS
Excellent video! this compressor is now on closeout at Harbor freight. i picked up one they happened to get in today, Jan 9-2023 off the truck, new unopened for $350.
Great! Let us know how you like it
@@RickyisHere so far this week, it’s great. MUCH quieter. About an hour of run time. The test will be time and if it holds up for many years.
Cool review ! Thanx.. I wonder.. since the motor is most a compressor would need at 29g if or how difficult it would be to up the hp a couple of pony's or go a bit further into it and increase the cylinder cc. Just how far it would go since the (smaller) 20g carrys 2.5hp ?
Just a thought ! See.. I'm the kind of guy that buys middle of the price road, thinking I'm saving a couple of dollars, then after a year or so I start wondering what could i rebuild ?? ..having my self almost believing i could save a few more dollars not buying what ever it is I've worn out (which sometimes is actual, somtimes I'm left as a fool) so I try and rebuild and make improvements to an extreme measure most of the time. I find the weak link much of the time, things usually commercial products made are just for what it's made to do, most of the time I find. Well the lesson I find most is if you're not careful it'll blown-up having to buy replacement tools, so if I would've bought the bigger or more quality or a number of other things I may save $ in the long run ?!? Good luck guys (and ladys too) I'm gonna bite the bullet on this one !
Nice compressor review, very informative to say the least!
+Gran Amadiz De Gaula Thank you for watching the video! 😀👍🏼
If compressor not stop and keep running ,what I have to check or change part, or presser censor problem? May replaceable ?
Great review man I've been look for one thanks
Thank you for watching, I will be posting a follow up review after 6 months of use.
Thank you for the review. I can't tell from the sound in the video but is it quiet enough to run in a garage without wearing hearing protection? That's what I'd really like to know. Thanks.
I have it in my garage and I use it regularly, I don’t see the need to wear one unless is running constantly for over a couple of hours
CFM-6.4 @ 90psi How well does this unit keep up to continuous use like running a die grinder which pulls an average of 3cfm. Will it keep a constant 90psi? Thanks
How many amp plug ,I heard you need a 30 amp outlet.
Thanks for taking the time to make the review. I am considering the same two units. I was wondering if your option is still the same?
I haven’t check yet, I believe somebody on the video said the specs were changed slightly but I haven’t personally verified that.
Very good review. Hopefully you'll have a follow up on how it handles your tools. I agree with you on maintaining the machine. If you're not handy enough to pull some maintenance, then you're not handy enough to need such a fine machine.
Thank you +Joe Atwork for watching the video and taking time to post a comment. Definetly I will post a follow-up video showing the performance of the compressor and if there are any issues with the unit. Thank you for the sugestion. 😀👍🏼
Thank you! Great video! Info like torque chart, bar setting, noise testing, also are helpful. I am researching to buy a low cost compressor. Do you think the 90-day warranty is going to be an indicator of its quality control comparing to Kobalt ones (which is 3 years) ?
Thank you for your comment, the 90 day warranty is a store wide policy for HF. Is my opinion the quality is in par if not above Kobalt.
Great to know! Thanks.
if it helps ive had the 10 gallon oil hf compressor for years, it can run the earthquake impact just fine. just buy the oil n change it. i don't believe these come pre filled as in the video either way you'll want to change it after break in.
Agreed, to clarify my unit came pre-filled. I did not change the oil after the break in since is not required on the manual. Like I mentioned on the video the maintenance for this compressor is more demanding and complex than the dry ones but if you properly maintain them they will last for a long time. Thank you for watching and posting your comment. 😀👍🏼
RickyisHere Thanks. If you haven't already definitely change the oil most guys change right when they buy it cause the factory runs them, then do break in an change it again cause its literally breaking in the piston as it gets hot an beds in. One hf oil jug will handle all this and with no metal in the oil itll last forever.
Excellent review and filming, like everything else the cost of this unit has gone up significantly.
really nice informative video...hf is hit and miss on a lot of tools...tis looks like a hit.i hear its not to loud also
I'm in the market for this compressor and I like the upgrades that they've made to them. I have a 21 gallon and it just can't keep up. Not to my liking anyway. Not to mention it's much quieter. Thanks for an excellent overview.
+Rob's Wrenches Thank you for watching the video, I already did some necesary mods on mine. I added a shut off valve right after the regularor, I did that for safety reasons and as a convinience to change the hose without damaging the quick conmect couplers. I will do a follow up video showing what I did. If you have any especific questions just post them and I will be glad to try to answer them.
+Rob's Wrenches Like I stated on the video, after all the shopping around, I coudnt find a better unit with the quality and at this price. The Kobalt unit was more expensive, some components were similar (motor) and some in my opinion inferior (like the pump) when compared to the CP/HF unit, thus I coudnt justify to pay more for less, I used a cupon and I got it at a pretty good price. Good luck with your purchase. 👍🏼
Great! I'd like to see the mods you've made. I look forward to the next video.
+Rob's Wrenches I posted a new video on how to repair an air hose. Use it as a sneak peak to the accesories video I will post soon.
I just subbed to you Ricky. I thought I had before, but the new CZcams has wreaked havoc on my notifications, etc. It's janky at times and my uploads just hang in perpetuity. I suppose their working out the kinks as they go.
Hi, today I went to Harbor Freight Tools and didn't see the Hour Meter on the air compressor.
Its my understanding that the new ones don’t come with one anymore
would this work for the small blast cabinet they have
That small blast cabinet can take UP TO 10 cfm at 100 psi. This 29 gallon air compressor puts out 7.3 cfm at 40 psi and 5.9 cfm at 90 psi. So, you're certainly not going to hurt the cabinet but the cfm needed will depend on the sand or soda blaster you have. The HF 40 lb blaster uses an average of 6 cfm at 60 psi and 25 cfm at 125 psi. The HF 15 lb soda blaster uses 7 cfm at 90 psi. So, I would say that this air compressor will function well with your blasting needs.
is it good enough for 29 gallons for impact gun to release nut and bolt for auto / mobiles ?
yes it works great with the impact gun
I have a 15amp breaker in my garage, what is your amp breaker rating in your garage, will it pop.
+Brian Farnsworth Mine is 15 amps also, if you connect the unit directly into the wall it wont trip the breaker as long as you dont have any other heavy equipment running on that circuit. I have a 15 ft extension (10 or 12 gage...not sure) and it works flawlesly. If you connect the unit to a long extension with a low (thin) gage it increases the chance to trip the 15 A breaker.
RickyisHere perfect thank you
Nice review, I think the pump is made by Abac
so the box say one thing 6.4 SCFM @90PSI 7.5 SCFM @ 40 PSI at 0:06 but there web site says 5.9 CFM @ 90 PSI, 7.3 CFM @ 40 PSI can you paint a car with this compressor in sections or whole
I don’t see why not, you will have to install additional attachments to remove water from the line otherwise the paint job will be messed up. Thank you for watching and commenting on the video.
Question.. i just bought one and it said to let run for half hr with coupler in line so air expels for break in.. but it said nothing about changing oil or retorquing the heads like most video's on this unit after break in !
anthony grelli I have the step down from this one I would highly recommend you change the oil after break in. I did and drained in a mason jar, lots of metal shavings !
The metal shavings are expected and they don’t pose a serious problem, since there is no oil pump the shavings just go down to the oil pan and wont plug any oil lines. The unit lubricates itself by moving/splashing oil internally. After almost a year my unit has run with no problems and I haven’t changed the oil yet, actually I will be posting a 1 year review of the unit soon. Thanks for your comments.
@@RickyisHere The owners manual does suggest every 6 months to change the oil, and regardless of oil pump or not you dont want the metal shavings scarring your cylinder walls.
So i did purchase this compressor. And holy crap it is quiet. I really like it...however i am going to go back and get the 60 gallon...the 29 doesnt quite keep up with all my tools. But it is a really well made compressor...the motor appears to be made in the US also...not sure what that is a about
Agreed If you are running a shop or have specific tools that demand a more than average air volume the bigger the better.
Does this have a dual voltage 120-240 volt motor?
I am not sure, since I ok with the 120 V connection I haven’t check.
the motor's spec plate only said single phase, 110v.
These compressors have changed. The handles are different now and they no longer have an hour counter which is unfortunate
According to my kil-a-watt this draws less amps than the 21 gallon I replaced with this. Starting peaks around 23-24 amps, depending on temp. That's with semi-synthetic. Runs at 14-15 amps once it is warm, depending on pressure in tank. The 21 started around 27. It rant 15-16 all the time. At 45 degrees, it wouldn't start. Not even with a 25' 10 gauge cord. www.amazon.com/ProStyle-25ft-Conductor-Extension-Lighted/dp/B01N0T8MGC/ref=pd_sim_60_5?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01N0T8MGC&pd_rd_r=TA4AZ015BDEZMYRZS9XT&pd_rd_w=SujH5&pd_rd_wg=50xSR&psc=1&refRID=TA4AZ015BDEZMYRZS9XT
+Peter Hewel you are correct! this unit is more efficient than the 21 Gal model. The 29 gal runs the electric motor at 2 HP, the 21 gal is 2.5 HP. So is more efficient, quiter but the trade off is more expensive. Thank you for watching the video and posting a comment. Enjoy your nice piece of equipment 😀👍🏼
$479 now at HF on clearance , 100$ more than it used to be
wow all that “free” money the government gave away now is biting us in the rear w inflation
@@RickyisHere so my local hf, at checkout was $388 + 10% off the list price of 479 for the clearance price.
I looked up this compressor on HF and the specs have changed. Lower now.
5.9 @90psi
7.3 @40
What happened?? Same item #61489
DrLedhead haha I noticed that too!! So which one is it!
Probably got called out on the bs and had to change it
@@MrShaun1578 so what model ## is the best one too buy?
👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐💯
Hmm, odd the current ones state 5.9 cfm at 90 compared to your 6.4 cfm
Maybe an overstated figure from HF and they fixed it or they cranked down the pump’s rpms on the new version....maybe to increase reliability but I am not sure....hard to tell.
Well regardless, I just bought one and have to say it truly is quiet! Thanks for the review and one year update.
Certainly helped me decide whether or not I wanted to buy this particular compressor.
Congratulations Jimmy, You are welcome, I am glad to help people thru this channel. Let us know how you like it...👍🏼
I'm just curious if it will run my 1/2 impact fine I'm just a home gamer so not so much heavy use like a shop
I will do a one year review soon but so far I have no problems with the unit and worked with all my tools including impact guns. I don’t have a shop either so I can’t tell if under constant use/abuse the unit will survive but as a home owner its more that what I was expecting for the price. Thanks for watching and commenting!
yeah but I just read the sense line on that unit the little airline that goes to the control box that tells when to turn off the compressor is made of plastic just wondering if that is true
After way too much over thinking and research, you helped me finally make up my mind! That’s all I need . Quite too and doesn’t draw too much current
Glad to help, have fun and thank you for watching my video
1:06 "And on this particular model the motor was assembled in China but once again not assembled in China." WTF?
“the motor was assembled in China but one again whats not assembled in China”....its called sarcasm Uncle Bob
@@RickyisHere I speak sarcasm but I didn't hear the whats. Sounded like "was not", it's called enunciation. Thanks
does your spatter oil out of filler tube air hole? annoying as shit!!!!!!!!!!
No mine is clean, check your oil level, there is a possibility yours might be overfilled or the cap is broken
@@RickyisHere - naw itwas dead on, left sit overnight to make sure. Turn on and within few mins oil spurting everywhere..... Thanks though!
If you are within the warranty period take it back, it shouldn’t be doing that
Oil free air compressors are not reliable at all
Agreed 👍🏼
I have an oil free 8gal Campbell Hausfeld 2hp 125psi 4.0scfm@40psi 2.6@90psi I’ve been using for 16yrs without issue.
