  • Rob Wardle, known as Bob by many who knew him as a player, started his career at Bristol City, before moving to Shrewsbury Town Football Club.
At Shrewsbury, he would make 131 appearances in his eight years there, earning him a move to Liverpool Football Club, with Steve Ogrizovic going to Shrewbury in exchange.
In this interview with Rob, he talks about his love for sport, and football particularly, and takes us through the highs and lows as a professional footballer.
He has some valuable life lessons for anyone starting a career and also gives an insight into the positive, “can-do” attitude that helped achieve in sport as well as business.
Rob's football career was sadly cut short by a freak eye injury. And we will never know if he would have wrestled the number one jersey from Bruce Grobbelaar, or where his goalkeeping career would have taken him had it not been halted so abruptly.
A testimonial match in his honour was held in 1986 where his former clubs Liverpool and Shrewsbury played one another.
I have known Rob for about 30 years and he is one of the nicest, most genuine people you could meet. A friendly, warm gentleman who, I am sure, we could all learn from.
Make sure you subscribe so you don't miss any of the learning over the coming weeks

We met when you were Shrews supporters player of the year. You told me why you raised your right knee when jumping for the ball!

And, after the 3-3 draw with B/ham City, you also said, “It was a great game for supporters, but a terrible game for me because I had to pick the ball out of the net 3 times,” A true pro Bob, and a great bloke all round!!

Bob Wardle has a special place in the hearts of Salop fans of a certain age. We'd had John Phillips and Ken Mulhearn, and went on to have Steve Ogrizovic, Joe Hart and Dean Henderson but I'd rate him as our greatest. Winning famous duels against Clive Walker of Chelsea and the wonder save at Luton Town. So disappointed for him that things didn't work out, but hadn't quite understood why before this video.

Thanks Michael, appreciate your comments and I will pass them on to Rob (Bob), I know he will be pleased to hear this. Although his football did'nt work out as planned he has a fantastic family (still married to Karen) and two great kids (all grown up now)
