Today I do a video on Gay Meadow, the former home ground of Shrewsbury Town from 1910-2007.

Fabulous ground in a lovely location. The new ground, not so much. Shrewsbury is a wonderful town! Make a weekend of it.
Well that brought back a host of memories. I started going to the Gay Meadow in 1964 and missed very few matches until I moved away 10 years later. Happy memories watching from alongide the home dug out in the days of Harry Gregg and also from the Riverside stand. I recall the man who used to retrieve balls from the river in his coracle disappearing down the tunnel when a ball sailed over the stand. There was a story that one misty night he pursued what he thought was the ball right down river to Bridgnorth, quite a few miles away, only to find that he'd been chasing a swan! Memorable moments include two matches (can't recall the year) when they scored 7 goals in quick succession. One was 7 - 3 against, I believe, Port Vale. Alf Wood, a ferocious centre half, had recently been moved to centre forward and started one of those games by planting the opposition goalkeeper into the back of the net at a corner; poor bloke never receovered and the Town ran riot. Happy days but the ground was limited by its surroundings and the new one is a beautiful facility.
I went to the meadow from a young age and really enjoyed being close to the action! I stood in the Riverside End opposite the players entrance and always joined in with our entrance song, 'catch us if you can'... I moved out of Shrewsbury in 1979 but the club have remained in my veins! Up the town...
Gone, but definitely not forgotten!
Great memories. I used to sell programs down there in the late 70s. Always a great atmosphere
Thanks for the video. I remember a lot of the comments. The year it closed you were allowed to rent pitch at end of season and also the new ground. I am proud to say I was one of the last to play there and we played at end of season at new Meadow. I also did the zip wire event
Thanks for watching the video
Gay Meadow was always the perfect away day. Lovely, picturesque ground right in the town centre with all it's amenities. Bit of a bogey ground for us though!
It reminds me of Craven Cottage how it is right on the river.
It's great to hear so many nice comments from people who've visited my home town and home clubs former stadium. I've always been a fan of the Town and have so many great memories from the old Gay Meadow stadium. One in particular that stands out was when I was ball boy in 1991 when Shrewsbury played wolves in the league cup and I took a Steve Bull missed shot smack in the face and was knocked out cold. He gave me his shirt at the end of the match which he hit the other wolves players to sign. My uncle also played for Shrewsbury during the 1980s and early 1990s before he was sold to West Brin for what was then the clubs record transfer.
Thanks for watching and for commenting
Was that Bernard McNally?
@@peterkearns665 yeah
My first away match was at Gay Meadow in 1989 great day out nice little ground and a decent drink in the Town
Shrewsbury is a nice place.
Visited Gay Meadow a few times as a Walsall supporter in the late 70*s. One of my lucky grounds because we did*nt lose while i went there.Lovely little ground with a unique feel and atmosphere,,,,,and you videos and narration are great so take no notice ....
Cheers, thanks for watching the video.
I lived in Shropshire in the 1980's and went to see Shrewsbury play here a couple of times as a kid. Even though they lost both times (in the old 2nd Division) there are good memories. Thanks for the video
Cheers, thanks for watching.
Keep up the good work mate, great seeing these.
Cheers Maurice
I was at the record attendance game v. Walsall. Always a fierce local derby. The Saddlers won promotion that night
Great video mate never went there, but been too there new ground 👍
Cheers Carl Sherwin
For a reason too lengthy to write now, we always try to sneak Weetabix into matches away to 'The Shrews' and are always frisked for them by stewards as we go in.
This doesn't happen so much at 'Montgomery Waters Meadow' but, at Gay Meadow the air on the away terrace was often thick with Weetabix dust.
Matches at Shrewsbury between the two teams are therefore often described by the media as 'The Weetabix Derby'.
Up The Gas!
Interesting sneaking Weetabix in there.
At a match there in the 1980s the ball flew out of the ground into the River Severn. A chap near to me slung a coracle onto his back and hurried through a side gate to go and retrieve it.
I read about someone who did that at every home game.
Mr Davies was the man’s name who fetched the ball out of the river
I went to school with his son John
Crowmore junior school and then Belvedere boys school
Happy days
1965 to 1976
@stevewilson1600 you'll know my dad then Bryan Bates
Went there 3 times during the 80's with Charlton. Very handy if you went by train.
Didn't they used to have a bloke in a boat on the river behind the home end retrieving the matchballs?
From what I have read, yes they did.
@@historyoffootball87 Yes I think you are right.
Yes I've got many fond memories of the old girl STFC blue/Amber army till I die💙🧡
Poor Cadman
I know
Great times at the old ground
It’s pronounced shroozbury not shrowsbury
There is a long debate about the pronunciation of Shrewsbury. If you go on Google there are several pages that talk about it.
@@historyoffootball87 I’m from and live in Shrewsbury. Everyone here says shroozbury. If anyone is correct it’s the people that live there 🤦🏼
@@historyoffootball87 I was born in 1960 in Monkmoor and as a true Salopian it’s pronounced using the E there is no O in the spelling
This always boils my well you know
