- शिव कुमार बटालवी: पंजाब का वो शायर, जिसने कई खूबसूरत शायरियां और गीत लिखे. पाकितान के बारापिंड में पैदा हुए शिव कुमार बटालवी ने अपनी शायरी गुरमुखी लिपि में लिखी. जबकि पाकिस्तान में पंजाबी लिखने के लिए शाहमुखी लिपि का इस्तेमाल होता है. 1970 में बटालवी का ये इंटरव्यू महेंद्र कौल ने किया था. देखिए बीबीसी का यह ख़ास वीडियो.

He pronounces it as qataab because in the Shahmukhi (Persian) script it's actually written as Qataab. You'll find a lot of old generation punjabi and Urdu speakers pronouncing the flat vowels instead of proper Indic pronunciations. But his choice of words and delivery are genius. Listen to the way he utters the word "return" "श्रेणी" "स्वीकार" "बौद्धिक" very typical of a person who learned punjabi/urdu/Hindi using Persian script. उर्दू में हलंत नहीं होता तथा ई एवं ऊ की मात्रा भी प्रायः नहीं लिखी जाती। इसी कारण से उनके शब्दों का उच्चारण बहुत भिन्न है।

He was in love with Gurbaksh Singh Preetlari's daughter. Her father never accepted him. He was languishing without her while writing poetry dedicated to her. The girl was sent o USA by her father to separate her from Shiv. You lose your love, your heart gets flooded with the words of pain that becomes immortal poetry.

ये जानकर बहुत दुःखी हुआ हूं कि ये इतना बेहतरीन और प्रतिभावान शायर इतनी कम उम्र में इस दुनिया से चला गया।
शिव कोई दूसरा हो ही नहीं सकता.......इसी इंटरव्यू से मैंने शिव को पहली बार सुना था, और पता नहीं उनकी आवाज में क्या था कि आज तक उनका दीवानापन बरकरार है।उसके बाद से तो दीवार पर शिव किताबों में शिव दिल में शिव.......बस शिव ही शिव है।
कई बार इनके दर्द को महसूस करने की कोशिश करता हूं तथा शिव में खो जाता हूं, इतनी अथाह पीड़ा को ये झेल कैसे रहे थे.....तभी शायद उन्होंने कहा था कि "किसी किसी दे लेखी हुंदा इन्ना दर्द कमाना" आप के चलते मैंने पंजाबी भी सीखी.....और आप की कविताएं आज भी अमर है, शिव का मुकाम ऐसा है कि कोई भी अगर विरह पर लिखने की कोशिश करता है तो उस पर शिव की छाप नजर आती ही आती है।
बटाला के इस महान शायर को दास का नमन🙏🙏 आप के चरणों की धूल माथे पर लगाने एक बार जिंदगी में बटाला जरूर आना चाहूंगा❤️

I am astonished by his simplicity and personality. I have tears in my eyes while listening to him,unki ek ek baat itni saadgi,ehsaas se bhari huyi hai ki sidha rooh choo jati hai. Itni khoobsurti se wo baat karte hai,itni pyari boli hai. Mai ajtak itna pyar se bolne wala shaqs nhi dekhi.
