I don't know why it's so complicated. Roberto Luongo carried them through years where they couldn't score to save their lives, even into the playoffs, past a round when they had no business being there, and then without him, they don't go to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2011. I'm the biggest Kirk McLean fan you'll ever see. I remember going back to the goalie controversy between Kirk and Troy Gamble, before Gamble got I believe a concussion and played himself out of the NHL after that.
But Luongo was the best goalie objectively to ever play for the Canucks. I never saw Gary Smith or Richard Brodeur play live, but I've listened to a lot of Don Taylor talk about them and I'm pretty confident about that statement. Yes, he had some bad games in the Finals, but so did the rest of the team. It was just a complete team meltdown combined with Tim Thomas playing excellent hockey and Brad Marchand getting in the heads of all the Canuck players.
Every goalie has bad games. Patrick Roy heard chants of "Racicot" in 1993 before he won the Cup. Playing a goalie for 70 regular season games sounds awesome, but very few goaltenders can do that and then go on a long playoff run. New Jersey had a system under Jacques Lemaire, Pat Burns and others that allowed Martin Brodeur to be somewhat fresh by the Finals in their championship runs.
Luongo was exhausted by the time they played Boston and the Bruins just beat them up. And against Chicago those years, Byfuglien was basically sitting on Roberto for most of the game and the referees did nothing, after they constantly penalized Bertuzzi for the same thing.
Ultimately, Luongo gets a bad wrap because fans overvalued the rest of the team and because of their position in the regular season standings, it was assumed for some silly reason that they carried him, meanwhile he got very little credit for carrying the team from the time he got to Vancouver. Unless you were a die hard fan who "believed" in 1994 like me, a stupid 12 year old with a crush on Kelly and Lisa from Saved By The Bell and Ashley from Fresh Prince of Belair, that Cup run was completely unexpected. Even I thought they were finished after going down 3-1 to Calgary. Then of course I jinxed them by expecting them to win against the Rangers. 😂 McLean was a huge part of that run, and he was rightly revered for that. But to a lesser extent, he got a free pass for his off seasons like Richard Brodeur before him because of that incredible run. Perception is everything. There is no reality. Only perception. Merry Christmas.

lol, with all due respect, Lou's a good man, but aside from this, its amazing to me how many forget how Lou absolutely shit the bed, no other way to put it, almost purposefully when one goes back and gives the time to really watch how those games went down in Boston in 2013 that gave Boston the cup...prove me wrong!
Demko has the skill to be better than Lu. But the wear and tear on the body nowadays seems to be the challenge
