  • I decided to introduce Filipino cuisines to more of my friends due to the great reception from Adrian and Ore. I invited John with me on todays culinary adventure as we try traditional Filipino cuisines such as sisig, Kate Kate, halo halo, crispy pata etc and then some alternative food, Filipino inspired ramen.watch the video to see johns reaction and whether this is something he will be trying again
    Hopefully you enjoy this episode also.
    If you would like to try the Filipino Cuisines here are the restaurants we went to:
    Kamayan SA Earls Court-www.kamayansae...

    It's tamarind that makes Sinigang sour.
    Remember that Filipino food is meant to be paired with rice because it offsets some of the excessive flavors in our dishes, we Filipinos would typically pour some Sinigang soup on our rice and we would also get pieces of pork and veggies as well and put it on our plate, we would then put pieces of everything on our spoon so that everything is included in one bite.

    • @CheatDayATW
      @CheatDayATW  Před 2 lety +11

    I’m glad that you shared and introduce your best friend to Filipino cuisine. As a proud Filipino, Sinigang is definitely an acquired taste. Growing up, I never really like eating Sinigang as a little kid; especially born and raised in the states where Filipino food back in the early 90s, some Asian foods were considered exotic and strange. Now that I’m older I come to appreciate the food my parents and ancestors grew up cooking and eating. Next time, I recommend you try Dinuguan (pork cooked in pig’s blood), Ginataang Gulay (vegetables cooked in coconut milk), Pancit Palabok (rice noodles mixed with a shrimp broth sauce, hard boiled egg, shrimp and pork rinds) and Bicol express (pork, chili cooked in coconut milk). 😊

    The shrimp paste should not have been mixed directly to the Kare-kare. It’s just like a dip to the meat or taken in tiny amounts just to give more flavor to your liking. If that shrimp paste was strong, the kare-kare sauce flavor may totally be altered. Whenever I watch non-Filipinos try kare-kare in restaurants, I wish they were advised how to take the shrimp paste with kare-kare.😊

    • @cbella2010
      @cbella2010 Před 2 lety +2

      Yes. The way to eat it is, you get the viand (kare kare) and some rice, and a little of the shrimp paste only, all in one spoonful.. But just a little bit of the shrimp paste, as some paste can be too salty, sometimes with less salt only, and sometimes the paste can be flavored with sugar so it can be salty-sweet as well... So you dont really know at first what is the taste of the shrimp paste. Every restaurant has their own way of cooking the shrimp paste. So before eating the kare kare, you need to have a taste of the shrimp paste first. So that you will know how much of it will you put in your spoon for every bite, to blend well with the taste of the kare kare. 🙂

    Sinigang is an acquired taste. Most Filipinos consider it as a comfort food, where the best sinigang you know is always the one from home because the level of sourness is in the exact level you like. As for the Filipino-inspired ramens....I like ramen, I like kare-kare, and I like sinigang. But those flavours combined in a ramen? Nah... BT,W, you have awesome friends.

Then the kare kare ..we only put a few amount of shrimp paste on every bite . Depends on how the shrimp paste saltiness .. sometimes it is too strong ..If you put all the shrimp paste you cant adjust the flavor anymore if it is too salty.. all Filipino dishes best eat it with rice even the soup dishes

    Halo-Halo used to be made with so much shaved ice and granulated sugar that you had to mix it first. While it became a tradition to mix it, these days it is OPTIONAL.
    It's a common misconception to think that "Halo-Halo" means mix-mix because "Halo" translates to mix. But "Halo x2" is sort of a homonym that means assortment or hodgepodge. Similar to Trail Mix.
    Filipinos are confused too, however they would never insist on first mixing together the "Ginatan HaloHalo" (another dessert) before enjoying it.

    Its actually good to eat the shrimp shell if you don't mind it, it is a good source of glucosamine which is a nutrient that's good for joints
