  • Well, here it is. We picked this up last week and finally got the video done for the introduction of our future camping bus. I am accepting suggestions for the name of this creature, and very glad to be able to share our new family addition with the world! It will be hard to be stealthy in this thing, but it will make for some very cool adventures. Cheers!

    We had a converted bus camper like this when I was a young child. There was always something broken on it, parts falling out, etc. It took one final trip from Red Deer to northern montana, losing a starter, a wheel and all but the emergency brakes on the way. And there it rusted for a decade on my grandpa's little plot of land until he died and it was taken away for scrap.
    It was a nice little camper to stay in when we visited, had a propane stove, a propane fridge, a queen bed in the back and a fold-down twin bed in the front, and a porta-potty closet.
    Good luck with your conversion!

      I have a CDL in the states that allows me to drive a bus. In the states (can't speak for Canada) the term "school bus" is actually a legal term. If you are using a bus for anything other than specifically picking kids up/dropping them off to and from school you legally can't call it a school bus. You fix that little issue by painting over the word "school".

Complete conversion with a queen bed, full bath and shower, full kitchen etc. Mounted a surplus submarine battery (about 400 lbs) underneath the chassis. Able to live with no electric for about 10 days. In 3 years full time drove all over the US, Canda, Mexico. So many adventures! It will take more time and money than you think. You'll get your first experience with that when you swap out the crap tires it has now. Please, don't go cheap on those, you'll be very sorry! And, your first step, taking out the seats; oh, it will be harder than you think! But, now matter what, you'll be able to fix or replace anything you install while you enjoy the great feeling of being self-contained with whatever level of comfort suits you! Best of luck

    Looks like you got a good bus! I was sure by the sound it was a International 466 engine but that derated 6.0 will be just fine as long as your kind to it. Recreational diesel mechanic here. Also that is probably a 300 amp alternator, which can easily support charging a lithium iron phosphate battery pack if you don't want to be bothered with solar. Best thing about it being a diesel is you can add a heater for the whole bus in an afternoon for less then $200 and pull right from the tank. If you have any battery or heater questions let me know! Glad you got a good diesel mechanic lined up. I think you will be fine, take care of it and it will take care of you.

    Great little bus, by jingo!
    On my school bus, I fastened window screening on the outside of every window, which helped GREATLY for mosquitos!
    I bet you will get all sorts of recommendations how to improve your bus! Happy Trails Steve~!!!

    My grandfather was a goldminer in Anchorage, Alaska and had a converted schoolbus that was his base camp. I would go visit him in the summers and spend some time in it, it was pretty fun. The back of the bus had a queen size bed with a privacy wall, after that there were 2 bunk beds on each size of the hall. and towards the front there was a propane stove and fridge on one side, and the table which used 2 of the bus benches across from it. Hope you have a blast with your new ride!

      Or a wood-burning stove and a cute little chimney. I have seen a video were someone had that setup, don't remember if it was a converted school bus or something else, but they did have it, and it looked and sounded so cozy.

    Rather than cutting out all the seats, remove the backs to the second to last seats, reverse the third to last seats and then you can lay a couple of twin mattresses down on a sheet of plywood and go camping in a king size bed . Can also do the same further up and make a dinette on one side

    • @MichaelMiller_WI_US
      @MichaelMiller_WI_US Před 3 lety +5

      I did this on my bus. It works really well and gives you the flexibility to lay either way and still have a built-in cushion to sit up against.

    • @MrSheckstr
      @MrSheckstr Před 3 lety +1

      @@MichaelMiller_WI_US looks like is five benches on either side? So yeah take the backs off benches 4 reverse benches 3 take out benches 1and two on one side and then reverse bench one on the other and make a table that can’t fit between them (set it up so that flipping bench one back to forward can be easily done) with that open space you have created that becomes your kitchen and heat source.

    • @MichaelMiller_WI_US

    When visiting the US as a youngster I said to the old man driving me that it is weird they use the same buses for prison transport and also for schools. Found it kind of funny, but makes sense, they are versatile and do the job, what more do you want. Seen some projects where people rebuild it into a living area, you got something there.
