Hi everyone, this is JD, your gadget review friend. We just finished comparing Pixel 6 to Pixel 5 and Pixel 4 and today we're going back one more year to compare ut with Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL. Our question is, is it worth it to upgrade? Outside this camera comparison video Pixel 3 or 3 XL is a dirt cheap pixel phone, not the fastest around but still a very reliable phone with great single camera while Pixel 6 is the newest phone from google boasting a larger senssor with 50 megapixel density. Can we the three 3 year old gap?

Oh yeah, I just shared my experience with Pixel 3 xl this week on one of the comment, I used this phone for gaming and still works like new. Super impressed!
Verizon is telling me they won't support 3xl at the end of this year.

Wow for an older phone, the Pixel 3 is holding itself pretty well against the 6. I mean the Pixel 6 takes slightly better photos and clearer videos but it's not like it's a crushing performance. Google is really doing something well with its pixel line.
Pixel 6 should definitely be an improvement over a model 3 years older...but is it really worth the $600 upgrade? My 3XL still works great....I'd say the 3XL is an absolute steal for $199 for anyone that has not had a flagship model. Great camera and night sight. Awesome Oled screen and higher resolution display than the Pixel 6. (3XL has 2960x1440 vs the new 6 at 2400x1080.) I also prefer the finger sensor in the back that i can use to drop my notification drawer down. 3XL had all the features to make it relevant 3 years later. I am also a fan of being able to squeeze my phone for google to listen to my commands.
I'd say the 3XL has stood the test of time and most Pixel 3xl owners aren't in any hurry to upgrade. The Telephoto on the 6 pro version would be the only thing wetting my appetite to throw down the cash, however $900 seems pricey for the camera upgrade. No it's not worth the 600 to 1000$ and you are probably already running the same Android version anyway. It's a scam unless there's some really weird preferential thing making you think it would be worth it.

Your right about the 3xl, i upgraded to the 5 from it but in hindsight i wish would've stayed with it longer and then gotten the 6 pro, mostly for the updates and the xl charging port was going out
@@sci-fiviewer9259 ZERO need, running a 128Gb 3. Only reason I got it was Googles FREE unlimited photos for life. Which they have gone back on as expected. About the only feature in the new phones that is better is peak brightness is better for outdoor in the sun use. For everything else I see no compelling reason to get any new phone. They are a poor substitute for a real computer with large 30 inch screen. Phone calls are the same on any of them which is what a phone is really for.

I think even in 2022 the pixel 3 does a great job with its camera unless you are using it to shoot videos because it does not have a good video quality but anyway I’m looking forward to purchase a google pixel 3 instead of a pixel 6 as a secondary phone only because of the camera quality
Great comparison, thanks. I just got my Pixel 6 and I was pretty shocked by the poor picture quality and was looking to see if others were having the same experience. I mostly do mountain photography and the Pixel 3xl is significantly better than the Pixel 6 pro. The Pixel 6 pro mountain photos looks like garbage whereas my Pixel 3xl mountain photos were incredible. Just fyi for anyone looking at a Pixel 6 for outdoor photography, you're way better off with the Pixel 3 xl. It's not even a close comparison for mountain photography.

Pixel 3 has a smaller sensor, so for static day time landscapes, it will keep everything more in focus with less natural depth of field and more edge sharpness. For low light without waiting for night sight, or for people or pets moving indoors, or for action or people moving outside, or for more natural depth of field, 6 is better.

Bought pixel 3XL (fresh one, 64GB) for around $200 just because of the camera. It is still awesome. In love with the screen and haptic already. Can't believe I got Android 12 over update. It is still a great phone in 2022 except it's oversized notch and chin.
Do you still have it? If you sign up for the Android Beta update, does it get Android 13?
@@bradleypariah No, android 12 is the last one, and it's piece of sh*t. Incredible amount of bugs, and there is no any software fix, as it was last update privided by Google. The best android was 10, 11th was more freezy, and there were no super features. But even in comparison with 12th it was great
Looks like the real improvement is on the video side. On photo side it's not a big difference. And if we want the wide angle lens we can get the upcoming pixel 6a cheaper or even pixel 5 for half the price.

Pro tip: You can record much better low light video by holding shutter button in camera mode and then moving finger to lock icon. It don't record audio in this mode (shame) but you can record audio using Recoding app at the same time (at least on Pixel 6) and later merge audio and video.
Video resolution depends on amount of light (1080p or 720p but still much more details that standard 1080p or 4k in low light)
I have a brand new 2XL, a brand new 3XL and a brand new 4XL, i regularly switch between all 3 as all 3 have things i enjoy when using them. I bought all 3 phones for the same price as a pixel 6, and have no intention of buying another phone until i need too, as all 3 phones cover all my needs.

This is exactly why I have been buying flagship devices...from 2-3 years ago! 😂 You can get an amazing phone for $100-200 and it will do everything you need/want it to do. No more clout chasing with the "latest and greatest".

I was thinking of upgrading my Pixel 3a and getting a Pixel 6 but despite the bigger sensor, at 4K 30fps I don't see much differences. My main issue with the 3a is a lot of compression artefacts with video. I wish it could look more like the videos I get from my cheap Panasonic FZ82 camera which has a tiny sensor and takes terrible photos yet has superior video quality to any mobile phone I've tried.
Yeah, the rear camera of Pixel 6 has good video recording capability but the selfie is just okay (heads up). So if you will buy Pixel 6 always use the main rear camera.

Sir I'm planning of buying 3xl. But I'm hesitant due to its battery life. Based on ur experience coz u're a gamer as well, does the battery last enough while playing ML?
I do play ML but I dont play that long. I keep it to 2-3 games a day and done. Keeping myself productive. Games is just part of my life but not my life. So yeah, I can play ML for 3 games and still retain around 65-70% from 100%. Results may vary depending on brightness, volume, heat and how long a game is. 😉

picked a pixel 6 pro for around 1300 USD including draconian government taxes, I had it for two days and was already feeling guilty for spending so much for so little an upgrade from my 4xl . to be honest I actually preferred 4xl side by side. returned the pixel 6 pro luckily the dealership didn't deduct much. quite happy with my pixel 3xl and 4xl both of which I got for less than 500 USD combined

Just a note: Pixel3 has the nightmode feature (and praise on reviews that its camera is super good), not sure if they stripped it at 3XL and 3A but I think they did allegedly do a camera downgrade (or some reported issues with it). Pixels becoming larger, yet same CPU, and only breaks or got worse at some things, sort of shows an example of corruption and technology suppression (purposefully downclocking the same parts or putting worse configuration to sell them clocked up on 'latest' phones that cost more). Buy your 1000$ phone, it either loses or is same. It only shows stupidity in the people buying the 500 to 1000$ one. Even now the Pixel3 if unlocked and configured how you want is a great steal at like 130$, it has sometimes the 120fps/120hz screen, picture, video etc. too not just the 60fps (sort of useless too but it's at least unlocked/better all around to have that option). Why else does a newer phone after 5 years become 1 inch longer, half inch wider, and still not noticeably improved? It shows too they 'already had it' years ago (when it comes to using the same exact octocore cpu, and having nightmode camera feature then making the choice to not have it) and now they are like selectively replacing certain 'fixes' in to newer models that intentionally broke themself. Any tech person knows too adding +350mhz of clock to the same cpu that already works fine is like nothing especially after 5 years, that's like something an overclocker does to get like +2 unnoticable frames on their PC on a game, at risk of not caring the CPU might become more unstable; I bet the original clocks are just slightly lowered on purpose and it's only now reaching the 'true clockspeeds' plus they could fit like a '16' or '32' core now but the would be useless; even pixel1's cpu is was 'more than enough' already and still is to run android/apps. People's obsession with phones that run the literal same exact thing (usually even years old phones can run Android12 and get the 'same' result) yet paying like 500 to 1000$ more shows probably why for 'years' they have price gouged and scammed and will continue to get away with it, and people will still be getting slightly worse cameras and things, then saying 'ehh its a bit better'. They even have proven created bad updates and intentional bad things to get you to buy something you don't need when you could feasibly be running a modern android version on any phone that cost like 50$ right now and not be out of any space even with many mobile apps (just as an example, not like you have to do it though). I suggest get the phone you want, keep it on the version you want, disable system updates in any way possible, then be happy with it for many years, and never overpay for it.
yes the older devices take somehow better photos like the newer one, somehow saturation and contrast with colours looks much better on the most old ones. For example the Mi 8 takes great pictures why they not continued ?! Because you cant make a Photo Device better, only different, understand? A Camera is not a graphics card to get better and better. For me all the Pixel devices are simply awesome compact cameras with build in telephone function. I love Pixel devices.

@@592Johno suck it johnny, I have a 6 pro since shortly after launch and though it has improved through updates it still has quite a few annoying problems that I never had with previous pixels and I've owned many of them.
The decision to go all glass, while iPhone and Samsung have gone more metal to avoid the early days of shattering... it shows how behind Google is with Pixel 6 series. Google somehow even ignored the macro camera for its wide angle.

Pixel 3 is very much useable even in 2022 but the main reason to upgrade is it wont get any more updates. So i am kind of forced to upgrade. I am not interested custom roms anyways.
Most phones are still not on Android 12 yet. Should be good for quite a bit long time, since apps get updated, and Titan M chip help with security. Google also released repair kits for new battery or the camera. I want to upgrade but disappointed by the Pixel 6 series and maybe 7 too
This comparison shows that Google has not made any changes to its algorithms for the new Pixel 6 sensors.
I prefer the Pixel 3XL's video stabilization which I find more natural and smoother, much like that of iPhones since the 11's.
I also prefer the night video of the 3XL which is more detailed, we can adjust the lighting and colors a bit in post-production, but not add the details that are missing on the Pixel 6.
I think a Pixel 4XL is still the best compromise at $300 or less.
Ps: the Pixel 4XL can crank up the graphics to the maximum in big games, which paradoxically the Pixel 6 cannot.

The evolution of the camera does not lie. There are 3 generations of phones and that has to be noted. The Google Pixel 3 XL continues to fight against any mid-range on the market, but the Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are definitely superior.
