- Google unveiled the new Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, their new flagship Android phones. This time, these phones are back with better screens, better cameras, and a big old notch on the Pixel 3 XL. But, can these phones beat the iPhone XS camera? Dieter Bohn reviews the phones to find out.

What would convince you to buy (or not buy) the Pixel 3 and 3 XL?
YOU'RE FIRST
Yes. Just... YES
I would love having the Pixel, for the camera and software. But, I can't downgrade in the hardware department, coming from S9+, I can not have a lesser quality screen.
Stereo speakers esp front facing
I would upgrade from pixel 2 to pixel 3 XL if I had a better trade in value through Google
Left pocket: smarthpone. Right pocket: keys, wallet, and anything else.
Honestly, I don't think ANY smartphone is completely keyproof. And most importantly, there's not much effort to keep your smartphone away from keys scrathing on the pocket.
A tempered glass screen protector and a skin go a long with to making your phone "keyproof" without adding any bulk. Plastic screen protectors get scratched easily with keys but tempered glass screen protectors dont
Smartphone can be wallet (Alipay, WeChat pay) and keys (via nfc or fingerprint) in China nowadays.
I only put my keys in my wallet in my left pocket
Q: Are you left- or right-handed? I honestly can't imagine handling my phone with my left hand
I’ve seen them at the store already. The back scratches like instantly
Is it just me, or are the Verge's videos consistently getting better?! 👍🏻
I've been thinking this too. The reviews are a lot more insightful in every day use
Nilay Patel's cameo was awesome.
Yeah, but except for the part where they try to be funny only to fail miserably.
Yup they've come a long way, used to hate their reviews now I look forward to them
unbelievable. It's as if practice is good thing.
The best part about the Google phones is that they *update the android version,* unlike some other phones that keep the same old android version for ever.
best part is they will update ur camera.why cant apple update the camera of the X. my p2xl is now better then most DSLRs i have no need for my nikon and it can do more then DSLR in someways like night sight is so awesome
Amarpreet Geadhoke lol what's your dslr cause no way a good camera + good lenses + knowledges makes worst photo than your phone camera. Not saying it doesn't takes good photos but it's reaching...
1
@@amarpreetgeadhoke2385 I know. I just bought the 3 XL and honestly, my 2 XL, is better. I can't even make calls on my 3 XL, on speaker, because for some reason, the people on the other end either can't understand me, or they're having constant echo of their voices, when they talk to me. Only in speaker mode. 😫. But the 3 does have a few better things than the 2 XL. But I'll use my 2 XL until I figure out what to do with the 3.
The Verge could sell me on a toaster 😂
I love Dieter but I couldn’t disagree more about the wide angle selfie camera. Every trip I’ve taken and I want to photograph myself in the environment I’ve wished for a wider angle to capture more of the scene. I don’t think it’s a gimmick at all. I can’t wait for it.
Yupp that's the thing. What may look as a feature for you, may be a gimmick for a lot of other people.
P.S even I don't think it's a gimmick. But you gotta understand why someone else may feel it's a gimmick.
Agreed, it's gonna be great for that : Best photo you took all holiday picture.
I feel like most people would've preffered the wide angle on the back.
u do know they say its gimmick coz it will cause distortion. while that may not matter much for certain pictures, you have to understand why it may not be useful for some ppl or some scenary
Lg g6 can already do that
The smaller Pixel 3 is perfect! I am switching from my beloved iPhone SE.
@Pandu Pratama Same here. I love my iPhone SE but I am strongly considering the Pixel 3.
Go with the pixel 3 . You would be surprised by what android offers if you haven't used one before
Mathurin Kerbouchard yess. Choosing small form factor device is perfect specially if it has flagship features. I think Apple generally reborn the new SE in XR body but its too large.
You are never going to regret it . Good Luck
Your choise, but in my opinion, you'll regret it.
I fail to understand why reviewers don't talk more about battery life. The phone can be as good as it can be , but if it doesn't last long enough . It's a no brainer for me !
I've heard other reviewers say the battery is pretty mediocre and you can probably expect to get a day or day and a half out of the phone.
That is so true that is the reason I'm willing to deal with that notch is just for the extra battery life. What I don't understand is why does the pixel 4 only have a $2,900 MHz battery in 2020 for a flagship phone? That is one of the main reasons I will not be getting a four at least with the 4XL they got rid of the notch
The non xl version is so perfect
Niguel But please note that this year the smaller one uses lg's poor poled screen while the xl instead gets a samsung oled panel and has won the best display award from displaymate
Nah, the XL is. Just turn off the notch if you don't like it... I prefer to have my notch though, for that extra screen
Agreed. I enjoy using this phone a lot. Great size and no notch.

Watching Dieter Bohn review Pixel series every year is a joy
Far out as a photographer the photos on the Pixel 3 look so incredible I might be able to look past the lack of headphone jack
i have the new p3 camera on my p2xl the pics are too amazing DSLR killer totally
if you buy a 800$ phone surely you can afford 200$ headphones
But does it have pads to prevent short circuiting from the psu?

Your videos are always so beautiful. Big credits for your presentation, the beautiful camerawork, the editing, crisp audio and the overal scenes and back drops. I have to say: This is the best smartphone review The Verge has pulled off to date. I give it a 10/10. You got a new fan, Dieter!
Well there is one thing that they didn't improve from the Pixel 2, shipping to Sweden...
your whole country owns only iPhones mostly lmao.
@@SH3player Not true. Try again. 😊

Still not coming to South Africa, either :(
It's refreshing to finally hear the positives about the Pixel 3. I was about to switch to Samsung after hearing everyone complain about the negatives since it's announcment.
i switched from iphone6 to s7edge and then s9 everyone said its gonna be a hard road but once i used Samsungs i can't use any other android let alone iPhone !
That's boring with tech these days. Sadly people (nerds) love to hate.
Don't listen to the naysayers! The pixel 3 and pixel 3 XL are great phones. Don't miss out on them just because other people don't like it. Buy whatever YOU like
The notch can be hidden but I don't think it would be in the way anyways. People are giving it a hard time just because Apple did it.
I still haven't decided myself. I got a great discount on the note 9 ($300)and debating on sticking to it but I really love the pixel 3. I'm still on a 14 day testing period before I can return it.
How much you wanna bet that next year they’ll pull up and say they don’t need two back cameras because they’ll scan your environment and merge your photo with other peoples photo to make it wide angle
Prince lmfaaoooo that would be insane 😂
😂😂😂
I'm happy to bet any amount that won't be happening.
🤔🙃😂😂
From what I have been hearing from various users and reviewers, the camera microphone is really bad even when compared to other much lower priced phones.
Also I'm not totally sold on Google's approach of just depending on clever software algorithm and touch-up to make your pictures taken with the single primary camera look good compared to a more superior hardware solution.
This is the first video of yours I've ever watched. There's so many phone reviews out there. Really appreciate all the helpful info! Looking forward to getting the Pixel 3axl

Dieter is the best!
@J ' ack V wheres your company sir?
My wife and I both preordered the smaller version of the Pixel 3 (unlocked). I went with the clearly white, she got the not pink. The factors that sold us on it were:
1: The Camera (of course). I do a lot of shooting on the go and actually do a lot of night photography so I am stoked on night sight.
2: Google assistant features. I love Google and use it for most of my home tech.
3: The smaller size. I HATE big phones. Smaller ones are more comfortable to me and easier to use (personal preference)
4: The headphones. This might sound funny but I was stoked when I saw they included some decent ones. I hate that this isn't always the case.
5: Stock android. I used to be a Samsung fan but I got SO SICK of their software bloating my phone.
Can't wait for it to arrive!
Edit: Just arrived! Love it! Camera is amazing, headphones are comfortable (sound great), and the size is perfect! Highly recommend!
Will u buy me one

Unlimited storage is my motivation at looking at this device. Why was there no mention of this? I think this is a huge selling point.
Because that was one of the selling points of last years pixel so they don't need to mention it again.
It's a very big selling point. It's definitely worth the mention in my opinion. Of course the camera is great but honestly the other flag ship models for other companies have a lot of great features as well. I think unlimited storage is the future of devices. I hope google paves the way for others to follow. That being said we all know apple will never do it.

I love my Pixel XL, and I think I will upgrade to the Pixel 3 XL! Thanks for the great review!
How did you like it?
Just preorderd my White 3 XL. I don't care about the notch. I'm coming from an iphone x and I kind of don't mind it. I dig the O_O face it has
Rob W I ordered the same one and I’m using a XS Max but I always have an Android and iPhone every year.
Yeah, what most people don't realise is that it's only 5% larger than iPhone X notch. Although both are very big, I prefer the shape of the pixel notch.
I've been still using the Nexus 6 (2014) to this day because I love the size, dual speakers and stock android (being a google phone). The Pixel 3 XL seems like an improved version of that, so I'll probably go with it.
Have fun downgrading in every conceivable department...

Wireless charging is great? I'd love to know why people think that is a cool feature, considering wired charging is faster, the wireless charger means your phone is tethered - just like wired, and with wired, at least you can hold your phone and use it. Wireless charging is the dumbest thing ever. I have yet to see a single person adequately justify it. It's completely stupid. Period. Let's gear your argument.
You speak the truth brother.
Scott Sparling I’ll admit it’s slow as hell but I just drop it on the plate each night and when i wake up its 100%. I feel like only at night this is a good option.
I hear you on that and I was in that school of thought and well until iPhone got wireless charging (btw, I'm an iPhone hater). What that now means is we'll start seeing more wireless charging in cars, Starbucks, airports and the like. I don't particularly care for it (I just got my 3 XL last night) but at least I know that I can use one should I need it.
It is priceless for me, as I always charge my phone overnight, with my alarm set for the morning, and very often I realise just before sleep that I need to check something on my phone. Not only is it inconvenient to have wires wrapped around you, which limit the range and position in which you are holding your phone and also annoyingly often drag my phone to the floor so that I then have to pick it up, quickly unplugging my phone and plugging it back in isn't an option, as it's way too dark to see anything during the night.
Furthermore, the Pixel Stand puts your phone in such a position that, combined with Pixel 3's 'always on' feature, it allows you to see your notifications, time, and whether from anywhere in your room. This is not the biggest reason for why I have ordered the Stand, but it's a nice addition.
Finally, the Pixel Stand turns your Pixel 3 into essentially a Google Home device, which is a nice touch.
I think it has major implications for the future. Imagine, for instance, pulling your EV into a parking space that can automatically charge your car while you shop. It's a nascent technology so naturally its uses are limited right now, but as the tech improves it could lead to ubiquitous and seamless charging for a broad range of devices and peripherals in the years to come.
i would like to know if wile wireless charging does the pixel 3 still show the google home features on a none pixel stand?
As far as I've heard, no. The pixel stand has a chip that the pixel phones use to activate the home mode.
darn! google is going apple..

Why is it so hard for Google to release a device with S9 or Note 9 hardware and Pixel 3 camera. Please Google, listen to the few customers for Pixel you have and try not to design your flagship like a POS
*- Sincerely, a Pixel user.*
Because Samsung is exceptional good at making hardware. It is really really hard to make premium products at that level, and if hardware is the most important thing for you then you should get a Samsung.
Honestly, probably because they don't have to. They are already kind of the best phones and this way there profit is much higher
They got WAY closer, it's really nice now! - Dieter
I mean calling the design a POS is just pure exaggeration. It's not on Samsung level but its nowhere near as bad as you're making it seem.
Essential made an extremely well built phone their first year and they probably have less resources available to them than Google.

I've got the Pixel 2XL and was eagerly awaiting a review like this - thanks for this! Great video! Is there any major difference in the 3 / 3XL aside from the actual size and battery life? Wondered if I opt for something more pocketable this year lol.
I really think the thing I'm most excited about is the integration of Lens into the base camera. Having that stuff happen dynamically rather than having to choose an image to analyze seems very important
You're absolutely right! /
I'm disappointed in what pixel could have been but I'll settle for the smaller pixel 3 and hope they really bring it when pixel 4 comes
Be careful with that. The trade in amount for a Pixel device is pretty low even from Google. Just be aware that you may not get much back when you switch to the Pixel 4.
@@starwinflux sooooo what your saying is wait for the 4 and don't get any pixel phone this yr🤔
Depends on what you have, and what you need. If you have a pixel 2 xl probably wait, its a very incremental upgrade which is not worth if you aren't really excited for what those incremental changes r bringing. If you a different phone it completely depends on what you have.
What if they had only wide angle lens in front and crop it a lil to make it closeup feel!
Little less resolution at least. Not the worst idea maybe.

i know its been awhile, but do we actually need the XL ? or 2 takes just as good pictures as the XL ? thanks =)
One of the best, most thorough, most informative reviews of a phone I've seen in ages. Impressive since so much about this phone is already known.
Thinking about switching from iPhone to the pixel 3, but I’ve started to hear quite a few people complain about the 2xl slowing down and lagging dramatically after a year of use. At $799 it’s kind of risk to get a phone that might only last a year before getting annoying problems.
Wrong, im typing this comment using a pixel xl, not even 2xl, the phone still fast af, not sign of slowing down.
I have to second what Hoàng is saying. I'm still on my original Pixel XL. I skipped the Pixel 2 because mine was still working flawlessly. I'm only upgrading to the Pixel 3 because over time batteries diminish. Other than that, it still works great. You can easily get two to three years of life out of it.
@Johnny Hickman And you don't think Apple takes user information for their own gain?
I had a first gen Pixel that was rendered useless by the Android 9 Pie upgrade, it didn't even last a full 2 years before dying. I had purchased a Pixel 2 afterwards because I wanted to stay with the camera, but that phone came out of the box with a defective mic. I returned it quickly after and am using a 5 year old 5s that works fine! And the complaints about the lag on the Pixel 2 are real! Even MKBHD has this problem on his phone. Don't fall for all the camera hype, photos are about the only thing this phone is good for, quality control with hardware and software seems to be a massively lacking.
Never had an issue with my Pixel 2 XL. Best phone I have ever had. That coming from a long term iPhone user. It all depends on what you want from your phone. If you love taking photos and having unlimited photo storage, you will not regret getting the pixel. It's also nice getting the latest and greatest on the software front. That prevented me from switching to android in the past but that is no longer a concern.

@@sahilparab8751 nice joke but the regular Pixel 2 has zero blue tint. It uses a Samsung AMOLED screen :D
Are you one of those people that upgrade their phone every year? Most of the features of the Pixel 3 are coming to your phone. Seems like a waste to go from a phone that had a 2 year warranty to start vs one that's more expensive and only has a 1 year warranty. Google is ripping you off,

I think people are comparing it to other alternatives such as OnePlus 6
You can’t compare the two, the IPhone XR has a lot more going for it then the pixel 3
the fact that apple has XSive pricing....no...they have unearthly pricing doesn't mean that google's pricing is right …. when you have the poco f1 at 300e and the oneplus 6 at 500e, the 50% (or even 150%) more money that google asks is a big drawback....for me 600e for the small one and 750e for the xl would be right
And the best camera too

pixel 3 -1080p lg oled
No notch but huge bezels
Snapdragon 845
5.5 inch screen

Smaller battery than iphone xr
Wireless charging

iphone advantage - larger screen, larger battery, faster performance
pixel advantage - better screen, more accessories, better camera, better speakers
My opinion - both phones are much more value for money than the pixel 3 xl and iphone xs series

I switched from IPhone to the Google Pixel 2 XL last year and loved it! I've toyed with Android over the years with Samsungs and Sony but always went back to IPhone after a couple of months! However I loved the 2XL so much I had to make the upgrade to the 3 XL ... It's not a huge jump in most of the improvements but the display is stunning !! I love it!! And the Notch isn't that bad !!
