I’m 42 now and still consider myself a gamer. In fact I consume video game related content on CZcams and the internet in general BUT when it comes to actually sitting down to play something in my free time these days, it is hard. I sit there, look through my games library not being able to decide what to play just to eventually give up and hop back on CZcams to watch something about some game related thing.

Sound like you just need to find a game you like, then you'll play it every free second you have and also love it. Some games just don't click, and sometimes you're unmotivated.
      I hate those times.
      What I did: start lifting.
Physical activity improves everything in life.
And you have less time for games.
So when you DO have time, time matters more, plus you feel motivated.
I have literally not been bored of gaming for like two years. Not i single second.
If I'm starting to get bored or the game is finished I just move on to next game, just as motivated.
      It's awesome.
I wish I had more time to play.

12:46 I've noticed that it also really depends on just how present you are in the moment - like the second you remember something - bam - a massive drop in enjoyment, especially if you get stuck thinking about the thought further. But have everyone together, phones away, and just having a good laugh? Man, it feels good.

As a game dev who tend to keep himself informed, it is not a down fall. It is the big triple A game making compagnie that are going through a recess since the covid.
The industry has doubled during the covid to ramp up the number of games they could make so they can please all those people at home with fresh new idea at a faster pace.
Now since the covid is gone, people can go outside and live their lives freely. The big names like activision had to let go huge chunk of their employees du to the lack of revenu and the sales declining.
Things are just going back to normal. Also the game industry always had those kinds of ups and downs since the beginning.

  • @jasoncrownover8947

The gaming industry has the same issue as most industries. Almost everything at the executive level is run by MBA's who don't care at all about the industry they are in. They don't care about their products. They don't care about their customers. Just that they make profits. Games largely used to be works of art made by small teams of passionate people. Just like you used to be able to visit a family doctor who owned his practice and cared about his community. But now everything is commodified and abstracted into numbers on a powerpoint slide for a corporate executive.
You can still find all of those passionate people out there doing good work, but most of the *money* in every industry is controlled by increasingly consolidated corporations owned by money managers who have never so much as touched the products they "make".

@@America_is_now_Mexico2.0 nah, he said everything right. We are getting shitty games exactly because "nobody cares"(c) about everything except 'profit'. Not going far - shitty suicide squad under 70$ which looks worse than 9-years old Arkham Knight??? And it's not just like "one minor thing" - there are tons of "fuck off" details all over it, AND it costs more.
Ofc it's not 'total' trash and there are some good parts of it - like those which are not related to our "main heroes" ss ones, but that's ridiculous. I once tried to play the game where game itself was ok but playable character was so fucking shit... I endured 3 chapters, uninstalled it, and swore to never even touch ones who's 'main hero' is some sort of imbecile.
But, ofc there are plenty of "it's a joke"(c)-mentality people nowadays about literally everything which will "eat" whatever of whatever quality 'just for lulz"(c). Naturally, there are may be comedy in creations - but it's nowhere near 'same' to justifying any crucial flaw of the games(as well as vices of their 'makers').

Being 59. I went through several stages of gaming. As a child the family had a console. Since we could not afford an Atari...we ended up with a Colecovision with an add-on module to the console that let us use atari game cartridges. My favorite then was Pitfall.
As a young teen playing arcade games it was Dig Dug then Dragon's Lair. As a young Man I bought an Atari 1024 ST and my favorite game on that was Dungeon Master. As i grew older I got a PC compatible and my favorite then was Masters of Orion. Then big on Diablo.
Then i got into RPGs. Ultima Online, Star Wars Galaxy - Jump to Lightspeed, But my ultimate favorite game of all time ---> City of Heroes. Best avatar creator ever made. You literally could make any character you could imagine.
Fantasy, sci-fi, horror, medieval, futuristic, steampunk, cyberpunk, mecha, cat-people, bird-people, minotaurs, vampires, werewolves, gorgons, androids, robots, ninjas, samurai, western gunslingers, sorcerors, beast masters. So many costume parts and themes. Roman Centurions, aliens, cyborgs and space pirates.
So cool. Great amount of content. I played from Black Friday 2005-end of game. I was one of the torchbearers in Atlas Park on the Liberty Server until they pulled the plug. Never found another game as rewarding since. 😢

And not only that, as being an adult and most games nowadays just dont feel the same as before. I have experienced the hypothetical at 27:20. When I first went into collage I was just married and had my first born on the way. I was playing games 2 to 5 hours a night and decided I was going to step away from gaming till I was making the income I needed to to support my family and that my free time would be spent working on my skills for work. 10 years later I came back to gaming with my 2 young boys and got them into it but I did not find it as enjoyable as I once did. I would play games and have fun but found myself wanting to work on the things I stepped away from gaming to work on because they had become my hobby. My boys are all grown now we all still love gaming but they know that I only play for a few hours a week.

Gamer here from the 1980s... showing my age... my favourite gaming experience in my formative years was finding the easter eggs in the ATARI 2600 console game .. Adventure. This game got me hooked in gaming, I eventually moved to the Commodore 64 and we wrote adventure games, I built a D&D character generator on my C64 which we could print character sheets from as well as a World Generator for the Traveller RPG. I play WoW and RimWorld in my spare time :)
In more recent years... me and my mates got together when Command and Conquer (C&C) came out... and set up our first LAN Gaming session, being able to play against your mates in real time.., was a serious WOW moment..

Blockbuster, Hollywood video store, 3 day rentals I remember those days and playing a ton of nostalgic games that even today gives me the feel of wanting to go back to those memories of being a kid again. Great time for video games.. no saves just codes to input if you got lucky enough to write it down lol

Minor correction on League of Legends: 100% of the characters, and most if not all content actually, can be bought with in game currency or earned through in game boxes, deals, or drops. Buying something only gives it to you immediately, by deliberation, instead of leaving it up to chance or having to be earned.

Love the pod cast guys, just started listening to them.
I have been gaming since I was about 4, so started on the Atari home entertainment system, then the star 64 built in game system, followed by the Sega Master System 2.
The master system really got me in to gaming, we had the light gun accessory and the game Rescue Mission, which was crazy to me how pointing the gun at the screen made it work, also had Chuck Rock, and a few others over the years, including the built-in game Alex Kidd in Miracle World.
This was a massive pet peeve of mine as a child, even adults couldn't read the title correctly, the characters name is Alex Kidd, not Alex the kid, he's not a western gun slinger 😂
After the Master system (which I still have), my parents got me a Sega Mega Drive 2 (Genesis for the Americans) and wow, that opened up a whole new world with the likes of Road Rash, Mortal Kombat, TMNT, Toejam and Earl and one of my all time favorites the Shining Force rpg series.
Then Sega released the 32x upgrade for the Mega Drive and my best mate got one we were able to play Doom on our TVs rather than the small pc monitors we had at the time and it.. was... amazing.
So many more memories coming back from this podcast, thank you so much.

As a kid my first 'awe' of a video game was with super mario world on Super Nintendo. I simply couldn't put down the controller.
The second 'awe' was Half-Life and further down the line Counter-Strike 1.5 and 1.6. I was losing grades because of these games!
The third time I felt 'awe' was my experience of going to Dream Hack with my own PC in the trunk with a bunch of mates in 2012 - not really a game itself, but rather the whole ordeal.
And after that, It's a blank. I'm still chasing that ethereal 'awe' of something amazing. I expected it with VR, but it didn't meet my expectations.
I have a hunch though, once full sensory VR becomes a thing - something like Sword Art - I would most likely feel 'awe' again for a video game.

Just wanted to clarify a thing said in the podcast, League of legends does not require premium currency to purchase any character, you can get them via blue essence (the free currency) but it can get a bit grindy at times and the game itself is highly addictive. The only thing you would need premium currency is for like skins and stuff which does not affect gameplay that much (except for those ptw skins) but even those can be acquired via loot boxes. I myself was a support or top main and I used pyke/yuumi or yone/sett and I had skins for each one of them, I played for about 2 to 3 years before I quit mainly due to ping issues, it was the time when Riot bought the sea servers from garena and I had switched my main account to where I was closer hoping to get a lower ping but in turn I got even worse ping and couldn't switch back without forking over money and it just ruined the experience for me because now I was playing against like sweats who doesn't touch grass with like a 200 ping

I always thought I'd never have that childhood gaming feeling again, until 2021 when I finally played Assassin's Creed. I'd never played any of them before, but even 12 years after its release, ACII - and Brotherhood - absolutely gripped me and filled me with joy, wonder and awe. For a brief period in my adult gaming life, I found a few games that completely captured my imagination. So it still can be done as an adult, it just really has to be the right game.
Unfortunately that series (or rather, Ubisoft as a whole) has become one of those obsessed with microtransactions and you really feel that in the more recent titles.
