  • I share my experience of trying to find a safe and legal spot to park my van overnight in the touristy downtown area of Memphis. As a solo female nomad, I know how important it is to stay safe while on the road. After not being allowed to park at a truck stop, I finally came upon the perfect spot that allowed me to park overnight without drawing unwanted attention. Join me as I reveal my stealth parking spot and offer tips on how to find safe overnight parking in the city.

Girl you are brave. Memphis is unfortunately not safe anymore. My family all lived in the upper Mississippi and Memphis area so going there as a kid was great. Now I wont even drive through it. Only one relative is there now. But he is moving back to nc soon Ive been to 48 of the 50 states and Memphis and St Louis are two cities I skip if im alone.

Wow! I was yelling at the TV watching you in Memphis! One of the highest crime areas with gang activity in the country! I used to visit with a hotel chain I worked for and had to find rooms outside the area due to such high crime. We had armed guards and barbed wire fencing around our hotel. Had to install bullet proof glass at the counter! Many guests and employees were attacked! So glad you were safe and nobody messed with your van! You were lucky!

EDIT: I finished watching and I was holding my breath your entire night! LOL When I lived in Memphis I lived way out by Germantown, so out in the 'burbs. I didn't live in Memphis very long because I felt so unsafe and it was not a friendly town at all. I'm so glad that you had a relatively peaceful night. I worried you'd wake up to all your tires missing or hear gunshots. Phew!!!

Granted, I’ve only slept in my van a handful of times, and you’ve slept in yours hundreds of times, but I have NEVER gone in and asked at a truck stop. If it’s busy, they won’t notice anything, but if the person is a petty bureaucrat who likes to wield power, they’ll say no just to spite you. I know it’s always recommended to ask at Walmarts and truck stops, but I’m an introvert, and why give them a chance to say no, when they aren’t going to care, really.
As I said, you’ve done it hundreds of times, and maybe you’ve gotten the knock at places when you haven’t gotten permission.

Any cop who shows up, you could literally point to the 5 other sprinter vans lol. I car camp on the weekends and I have never asked permission to park anywhere.

Love’s & Pilot have always been known to allow anyone to sleep in their parking lots no matter the location… I even asked my friend since she’s a manager at one & she even said all locations allow it! She also told me some Love’s locations now have two different hookup packages should you decided you want electricity & I believe she said $48 & $68 would be the two type of fees per night or you can stay for free with no hookup…

There's a great book called The Gift of Fear. It teaches that you have natural senses of fear that need to be treated with respect and are for the purpose of which they were given to you. Too many people brush it off and their instincts were correct. Too late by the time they realize it. Now I'm sure people think I sound paranoid lol. In other words, trust you gut!

I usually plan my trip around avoiding a stay in Memphis. That's not a comfortable city by any stretch of the imagination. When I drove a semi, I had to stop there twice, and if I recall, I couldn't get a wink. The only other city I recall being that uncomfortable was Birmingham Alabama. I'm sure there's spots that are fine, but I usually try to bypass those locations if doable. Then again, I've never embarked on a van life journey. I only traveled over the road as a professional driver, and with a travel trailer on leisure trips. You aren't stealth camping at all in a travel trailer. It certainly narrows the selection of places. Many of which cost to stay overnight.

They could be worried about pretty much anything. It's their property, so they're calling the shots. Good idea to ask. 👍👍

👀Thank you for showing me Mississippi❤ I can't ever go as it highly unsafe for ppl of color. It's a beauty of a quaint lil town.
    Safe healthy travels.

I was really sad to see that cute area of shops, etc. in Tupelo with no one on the streets. It looked like a ghost town, did you ever see many people? Lots of towns like that are trying to revitalize their business centers and hopefully people will support them instead of just going to Target, Sams Club, Walmart and Costco. It looked really nice and someone has put a lot of effort and money into those shops.
Wish I had seen you in the Atlanta area, I would have stopped you and invited you to dinner and a guest suite, I live in Alpharetta. Hope you have a safe trip back to the west coast and most of all, I really hope you are able to get help for your back problem, no bueno!!

Better to ask forgiveness than permission if all you are doing is crashing in your vehicle at a truck stop. IMO if you are a customer they shouldn't care.
In terms of security, have you thought about putting cameras on the outside of the van. I watched a build where the guy had used what are essentially blind spot cameras as security cameras so they blended into the van in terms of being stealthy. He had a 360 view of the outside of his build from from a tablet he could hold in his hand.

I used to be homeless in Phoenix Az. I had to find safe places to sleep every night. One night I found a place behind a deserted house in the middle of a field and around 11:00pm I awoke to headlights of two police cars who were sitting behind me about 20feet away. They never came up and said anything to me and then left. I stayed there for the night. I had a bicycle for transportation.

I wonder if you just asked if you could park overnight because you are traveling, if the attendant would have agreed, and just say you have a van rather than a camper van. I always think of a camper van as a Winnebago type van.
