VANTABLACK - The Darkest Material on Earth
Vložit
- čas přidán 19. 05. 2018
- Vantablack® is a super-black coating that holds the world record as the darkest man-made substance, it absorbs 99.96% of it’s light. Copyright Surrey NanoSystems.
► WHAT IS VANTABLACK? - Vantablack is not a black paint, pigment or fabric, but is instead a functionalised ‘forest’ of millions upon millions of incredibly small tubes made of carbon, or carbon nanotubes.
Each nanotube in the vantablack forest has a diameter of around 20 nanometres (that’s about 3,500 times smaller than the diameter of the average human hair), and are typically from around 14 microns to 50 microns long. A surface area of 1 cm2 would contain around 1,000 million nanotubes
► HOW DARK IS IT? - Vantablack has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the World’s Darkest Man-made Substance. It is the darkest material ever measured by the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington, UK, reflecting only 0.036% of the light that strikes it (measured at 700nm).
Thanks for watching

It would be so dark that you would be darker than your surroundings so you would be seen.
I'm an airsofter. I've fought in environments dark enough that gen 3 autogated night vision could barely pick up anything.
In my experience, for night combat you generally want to wear the same camouflage as you'd wear during the day. Perhaps the easiest way to explain it:
Suppose, during the day, you want to blend in among green plants which are illuminated by the sun. To do this, you'd wear green because you expect to be illuminated by the sun as well, and you want your colouration to appear exactly like that of the environment.
Then suppose you're fighting in the same environment at night. Thus, you'd be trying to blend in among green plants which are illuminated by, say, starlight. To do this, you'd wear green because you expect to be illuminated by starlight as well, and you want your colouration to appear exactly like that of the environment.
And if the enemy shines a flashlight at you, or looks at you through night vision, you still want to appear the exact same colour and luminosity as your surroundings. Too dark, and you'll stick out like a sore thumb.

Because outside USA, a billion is actually one million of millions (1,000,000,000,000).
Matto Godoy but the world uses the same decimal number system, right?
A billion is supposed to be a million to the power of two, which is where the name comes from, bi and million make billion, but over time it changed to mean a thousand million.

@@realerdealers1924 Wrong. You can see the outline of the black hole from the Event Horizon Telescope. Technically its a picture of a black hole because the black hole is in the picture. Also just because you can't see it doesnt mean its not there.

I know that this definitely wouldn’t be practical to actually pull off. But how insanely cool and trippy would it be to paint an entire room in Vantablack and then walk inside it?!
It would be like entering a void in space. You would have no visual perception whatsoever of the room’s inner dimensions while inside, and if you turned on even a really bright light bulb on the ceiling, it would do nothing to make the room any brighter than before, and would just appear like a small circle of light out in space.
Challenge Accepted!
go to a room with a good door seal, turn the lights off, close the door. you dont need to change the reflective environment if there's no light source to be reflected...
I think the juxtaposition of having a normal hallway and then having to walk into a void that really looks like the hallway is just dissolving could be quite cool.
Not sure how well this material is able to withstand being walked on though. Dirt on it will be visible since it reflects light
Someone did it already I forgot who but search around youtube you'll find it lol. I think they made a small room in their garage and did it.
I think Jig Saw needs to use this in the next Saw movie. A room filled with sharp objects and traps all covered in it.

and no one can use it without paying a prohibitive royalties price, so forget about any real life usage...
oh where did you read this info?
on vsauce or scishow I believe, it was a while ago I'm not sure anymore, sorry... oh what I remember actually is that there seemed to be only one single artist who managed to get the legal rights to do art with vantablack and no one else would be legally allowed to do so... I'm sorry I don't recall the actual details, so please don't quote me on that but I remember I got really excited with the material but also deeply disappointed realizing someone egotistically held it to himself only... things might have changed or the news might not be accurate, though (I hope so!)

I wonder if any one has looked into using it for high efficiency solar absorption. Seems like it could have high potential in the field of solar energy. Unless of course the absorption rate is so one sided that it will not transfer energy in a system or circuit .
It's fairly fragile. I don't think it would stand up to the high temperatures. Plus, thermal conductance is probably pretty low relatively speaking.
I meant for it to be uncased (sandwiched) inside the protective outer structure similar to how other solar panels are produced.@@grantmartin8661

Just imagine what could be disguised, or not knowing what you’d walk into.
Since light is a form of electromagnetic radiation as is radar i'm wondering if this stuff could make an aircraft or anything else for that matter invisible to radar. Does radar simply bounce off a solid object regardless of colour or is it reflected by the object like light.
That's a good question, but, the wavelengths in question (RF vs Light) are many orders of magnitude apart for this material. It's great at absorbing the visible light band, but probably not so good at the lower frequencies of standard radar wavelengths. Also, many aspects of "Stealth" technology involve reflecting the radar waves away. It's quite possible, that at some RF frequencies, this stuff might act like a super radar reflector causing whatever is painted with it, to stick out like a sore thumb ;)

There is other better suitable materials, there is companies developping materials that break light around it in some way meaning the object covered in it completely disappears from your visibility, you just see what lies behind it. And actualy cloaking material. Now that is lit af.
Unfortunately vantablack is an irritant to human skin and can cause long term damage to the eyes and lungs so it’s not feasible
I'm an airsofter. I've fought in environments dark enough that gen 3 autogated night vision could barely pick up anything.
