  • What is the treaty of Trianon, a cause for historic "trauma" according to Hungarian nationalist prime minister Viktor Orban? The treaty, signed in 1920, set the terms of peace for Hungary -- a member of the defeated Central Powers -- after World War I.

Even as a Hungarian, I never understood the hysteria around Trianon. Yeah, it was an unfortunate event for Hungary but whats the point of crying about it in 2024? Its a method for undereducated Hungarians to explain their own failures in life. And besides, hating others is much easier than actually doing something that matters. Thats the way Orbán leads my country and its so frustrating.

      1. As hungarian, you should know, Croatia and Hungary were personalunion. Means one king, but two countries. Of course if it is for 900 years, it is hard to realize.
      2. You should ask these questions:
      - Why were the borders drawn deep in hungarian majority inhabited territory?
      - Why got Austria territory from Hungary? Was it at the winners side?
      - Why got Poland territory from Hungary?
      - Why aren't souvenirs in the new countries state museums in hungarian language?
and so on... These are legitimate questions even if definitely O1 big G.

They did not disappear, they did not assimilate (where are the Russins or the Saxons today?). Just because Orban says it, doesn't mean it's a lie. Trianon is a national trauma for the Hungarian nation, especially for those 3 million Hungarians who became minorities in their own homelands. Not mentioning forced assimilation, deportation and massacres/genocides. Hungary also lost all of it major cultural and centres, leaving the nation hollow with only Budapest composing the center of mass. Ironically, the rural population is the greatest supporter of the Orban government, so indirectly, Trianon caused Orban's popularity in the long term. Trianon left the Hungarians scared, not because they lost Zagreb, Trencin, Banska Bystrica, Aba Iulia, Bistrița, Turda, Novi Sad, Rakhiv, Perechen or Eisenstadt, but the fact they lost Hungarian majority towns, cities, or whole regions.
