  • The Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka was the most revealing event of the 2024 Formula 1 season so far.
Not only did it complete a set of four races at tracks with vastly differing characteristics, giving us our most rounded view of the performance of the cars yet. It also marked the first weekend of significant upgrades.
What’s more, as this race was just six months after the last one at Suzuka, it’s the best measure so far of the gains made by the 10 teams with their new cars.
So what conclusions can we draw? Well, we’ve picked out seven key takeaways from the Japanese Grand Prix weekend that reveal all.
0:00 Why we learned so much
0:34 McLaren gains are not enough
1:52 Perez hitting targets - for now
    3:33 Struggling Ricciardo's chassis plan
    4:57 The surprise biggest improver
    6:19 Leclerc's unexpected weakness
7:56 The only winner at F1's worst team
8:58 Mercedes is where it should've started 2024

It's about time. Year after year they've struggled with tyre degradation even as the rules changed from one season to the next, but one year under Fred Vasseur and they've managed to tame that problem. And can I say, touch wood, four races in and there hasn't been any significant strategy blunders during a race that would cost them a lot of points. For sure, the pressure to perform and deliver must still be there, it's Ferrari after all. But I think the tension in the team is definitely less high-strung under Vasseur, and that's allowing people to deliver, even when under pressure. Let's hope this continues.

You can yourself google reasons why F1 drivers leave their teams. Ricciardo himself said in 2019, that he wanted change and thats why he left Red Bull. At Mclaren he has done decently with getting one race victory in 2021, so he wasent dropping down in Mclaren, while he could not get that many race victories as he did with Red Bull, because obviously Mclaren dosent have as good car as Red Bull has. His results seem to have dropped since joining Alpha Tauri and not since joining Mclaren, but we will see, if Ricciardo manages to come back and outscore his teamate with the tweanty remaining races this season.

This time the gap genuinely doubled, but the presence of the Ferraris & Perez in between were part of this. There was also plenty of talk that Piastri had learned how to deal with the Pirellis at Suzuka, but precious little evidence in the race itself, unlike his performance at Jeddah early this year. Are you referring to Osama Bin Russell? 🤔
I'll have you to know, that he is a _"distinguished gentleman."_ 🧐 (said in an aristocratic British accent.)

The lap time was deleted for a reason, because it was not an acceptable lap from Daniel. WEIRD to include that as opposed to his actual final lap, you know the one that counts.

Finished 3rd last year, out-performed Russell by 3 tenths on one of the most technical tracks this weekend.
At the end of the day, he only finished 2 seconds behind and Russell is a fast driver.

Favorite part of F1 is a $10,000,000 car is "slow AF" if it's half second behind over a 3 mile track. Life is good

I hate how many F1 youtube channels keep giving Danny Ric leeway on his slump performance especially when taking into account his DELETED Australia lap. A failed lap is not a documented lap.
