NAIL THE MIX is an online mixing school created by Joey Sturgis, Joel Wanasek and Eyal Levi - the guys who produced bands like TDWP, Chelsea Grin, Blessthefall, Machine Head, Monuments, Miss May I, Of Mice & Men, Reflections, Born Of Osiris, Asking Alexandria and dozens more of this generation's best metal bands.
Every month, NAIL THE MIX members get exclusive access to the REAL MULTI-TRACK SESSIONS from a REAL ALBUM, and a 6-8 hour live streaming class from the producer who mixed it. These are the actual sessions by bands like Gojira, Meshuggah, Periphery, Opeth, Fall Out Boy, Bring Me The Horizon, A Day To Remember and more - and NTM is the only place in the world you'll get access to them!

i think the problem with artists that want to "sound raw" is that they oftentimes conflate it with a flat out bad sound while not realizing that you can make a mix to sound clear and still have that rawness anyway, if you're know what you're doing.
I clicked the video because that was literally the creative difference I had in a band that I ended leaving. Another member was a huge 60s-70s fan and wanted every song to sound "raw" with zero reverb (because according to him reverb only was a clutch to hide errors lmao), zero compression (because "he didin't want to win the loud war", even tho that isn't a thing since internet streaming LUFS was adopted) and so on. People can really be stubborn even when it damages the goal (at the time we really wanted to do it seriusly)
@@MysticalPotatoHeadGrooveThing Kurt Ballou?
Exactly! Thrice's re-recorded Artist In The Ambulance is a perfect example of raw done right.

@@smash_adamsyes!
Out of spite, they need to send this video to the band’s singer
Seems like he need the reality check haha
"I'm not gonna move it, I'm just not gonna listen to that part anymore" is absolutely hilarious and I relate to it so much.
Great mix and watch.
I'm still in my first year of mixing, but already I can tell a lot of times when stuff sounds really bad. I feel like there are three phases, when you don't know that there's something wrong, when you know there's something wrong but don't know how to fix it (which is where I am), and knowing there's something wrong and how to fix it.
I'm already well aware that getting the base right in metal mixes is one of the hardest things, and I'm really struggling with that right now. I think it's a masking problem where I'm only hearing the high and scratchy stuff from the guitar
Taming the high end on guitars is one of the toughest things in mixing, so don't beat yourself up! If you're a URM member, we have quite a few Mix Lab tutorials on that, so give those a look if you can.
There's one more step!
So, it's a 4 step paradigm, not 3. Unconscious incompetency- don't know what's wrong. Conscious incompetency- I know what's wrong but I don't know how to fix it. Conscious competency- I know what's wrong and I know how to fix it. The last step is unconscious competency- that's where everything comes so naturally you fix things without needing to consciously problem solve. Think about it as, when you know a lick so well you can play it and just feel it without thinking of the notes.

This bit-by-bit was inspiring. How wide and full the mix ended up made my jaw drop. Thanks!
All the forums and comment sections seem to be full of people who have these rules about what you can’t do or must always do, so it’s really refreshing to see a pro just do whatever the song needs with zero regard to any rules. Thank you 🤘🏻
Really enjoyed this. More of this please.
This is awesome.
More of this please
Sad that the song was really good and he left the band because of it! :(
The singer mix LOL, just white noise.
Dave make magic with this, but a lot just solved with good EQ and gain staging, so good!!
quadruple phase cancelling white noise
Love Dave’s work and thought process!
It kind of reminds me of The Mars Volta. I can't believe that there was actually a great song in there.
Really cool stuff. I have so many favorite albums production wise that Dave has done so it's cool to see him work. Get Mark Lewis in there too.
Does anyone know if the parallel ones also send to the main drum bus with the Townhouse, or are completely in parallel?
How do you copy paste inserts from one Chan to the next in Cubase? I've always seen pro tools users do this, and had no idea you could also do it in Cubase (it's probably something simple like ctr+c click drag I'm guessing?).
Listen, there are mixes that are raw/fucked up sounding on purpose, that was just bad mixing.
fucked up sound that's actually good i can think of usually came from Will Putney, Kurt Ballou, and whatnot.
I'm a simple man. I see Dave, I upvote Dave. Anywho, whos "Baby Its Covid Outside" mix is that in your folder?
What hardware 2 bus comp is Dave using?
Late 80’s for the win. Love your work.
So sick. I miss URM... this made me want to redo my whole mix because Dave rules.
Awesome. Thanks
You're not alone! I was alive in the late 80's too haha!
Sounds great!
The end result ended up sounding pretty good, but a lot brighter and more modern sounding than all of the reference mixes. kinda like hi-fi stoner rock lol
I love Daves approach.
those toms fills are killing me. they poke
I like the references you've used but compared to them there's a lot of mids missing especially on guitar.
You should mention the engineers name somewhere, very transparent walkthrough thx !
This is Dave Otero. Badass engineer.
it's Dave Otero, he's a well known name in Metal production and a mainstay in URM Academy!
Thx, I’m new to this so I was curious
Next time I speak to one of those "If I had the tracks x mixing engineer gets sent, I could make pro sounding mixes too!" I'm gonna send them this vid. It helps to have good recordings made with expensive mics and pre amps, and a lot of well thought out choices made by the recording engineer, but plenty of amazing sounding records have been made with a sm58 in a garage too! xD
Dave's a frikkin beast!
It's always awesome when musicians want to get involved with the mixing/recording side of music, but they need to learn their limitations and put their egos aside. Just because you are talented at one aspect of music production, doesn't mean you are talented at all aspects
Most people don't care though. I've heard people and fans defend horrible mixes or recordings with obvious glaring problems so often that I think it matters rats ass to 95% of people...
I despair.
I doubt lack of mixing skill of the members is the problem
The whole thing sounds like chaos
What’s the plug-in called? That Allows you to A/B so easily.

BRO IS THAT THE ARCHSPIRE DEMO FOR THE NEXT ALBUM
No this is an older clip, it's from the last album
@@Slamadeus I figured. Just being silly. 😂
The singer may have tried this at home on awfully tuned headphones. ya never know
god the amount of clients ive had whose friends made a "better" mix than mine and, it sounds like the singers mixes mixes here, is fucking staggering. the fuck is wrong with some peoples hearing, seriously?
I don’t know how people don’t get gain staging.
Seems to me the singer has a big dip in his hearing rang and has over compensated... used to do same around 6k till I had hearing test and found 10dB deficit.... Don't be to hard on him just doesn't know his hearing has been popped 😮
*raises hand* Oh, I remember the late 80s all too well.
LMFAO!! I'm 50 and I remember the dead Walkman lolz.
I've learned so much more than even sitting in big studios and watching, URM is a great resource for really delving into the how & why. Really appreciate everyone.
Also fuck that singer...Ok ok just kidding. 😂
Why did the singer want the only audible drums to be the toms? Jesus I've never heard a drum mix that bad
this song is dope
What is the 'inside-outside' mixing technique you refer to a few times? Googled and no results.
Having two mix busses, one with compression and one without and sending certain parts to each before they hit the master bus. Kind of like parallel mix bus compression.
Thanks @@Slamadeus
@@Slamadeusis this just the Scheps rear bus thing? Non drums to parallel compression pre master bus
@@BrofUJunot exactly. It’s Machine’s technique - the guy behind Lamb of God Sacrament album for instance. He sends all instruments to two buses at different levels, smashes the first bus with ssl comp, while keeping the second one completely clean. This, in his own words, allows him to get this insane level of compression, while retaining transients. He explains it in the LoG „Redneck” Nail the Mix.
@@AdamMGuitar for sure, and it doesn't pump to the transients which is super satisfying
I love when i see cubase used for rock mixing, because all of my friends tell me that it s used mainly for trap, they use expensive macs and logic, but they cant mix for shit.
I have never ever heard anyone say cubase is for trap, or any genre specifically.. It's just a DAW, people use what they like and are comfortable on
Actually, a huge portion of the modern rock, metal, and prog metal producers are using Cubase these days. Still a few guys on ProTools, and some on Reaper, but Cubase is very popular among rock and metal mixers.
I listened to/watched this in my car and those toms were so obviously obnoxious that I'm surprised the subscriber didn't catch it. Might have actually been lost in the routing.
I understand trying to keep it true to the original mix
But for the love of God, add some samples already. You're killing me
Would you do a mix rescue for a Thrash Metal song me and my buddy recorded in my bedroom? we are a 2 man band with limited resources. it be great to have you rip my attempts apart
You can tell how bad the mix is on a phone speaker....😂
This is what I call a "cinderella mix". Because you, sir, polished that turd until the real beauty came out.
They would have to fire him for that mix. Holy trash meat.
This guy is funny as hell!
youre nuts fucking killed it
Does that singer not have ears? lol
As somebody else pointed out he might have a dip in his hearing. Might need to get his ears checked.
@@NormanTiner could be, but i think it's more likely that he's mixing on headphones/speakers that have an eq dip i.e. poor monitoring setup
more like a busted one, perhaps.
Fire the whole singer
So he wanted it to sound bad and quit the band
f*ck the audience perspective 😅
Least obvious ChatGPT title and thumbnail
They quit bc they are quitters Baby boys.
Hey Dave what's the secret to that hairline?
First
Weird cringe clickbait
It's actually true though.
If I'm working with you i wouldn't question a damn thing
You'd learn more if you did though, just because someone who's better says something doesn't mean it's right. Ask questions and why they think like they do and you'll learn a ton more. It's mixing, not math so there's not really any right or wrong. It's all about what sounds good!
you should question how did he make such great mixes, ofc!
