I think one for the most interesting thing that I found is that the J-20 is not a closed coupled canard as it looked. Closed couple canard like the Eurocanards use the canard to generate the vortexes that go over the main wing. Instead the vortexes seem to be generated primarily by the LERX just in front of the main delta wing. The canards seem to be primarily used for maneuvering.
I think that's neat, and a blow to people still claiming the J-20 is some sort of stolen design.

The reason why J-20 don't have a gun is because it's not a dog fighter... The current J-20 works more of an Archer or Sniper in air combat, it works with a fleet of J-10/J-16, it's row will be taking out enemy high threat target from afar, tearing up enemy AS fleet, then let other J-S follow up attacks to expand the combat agevantage.
The newer J-20s will have a fleet of 3-8 wingman drone that does the dirty work from dogfight to ground attacks...

1… I expect J20 fighters to engage from stand off distances during air combat and let J10 and J16 aircraft engage in close combat. But the J20 will engage in close combat after a later generation arrives with new engines including thrust vectoring.
2… I expect China to develop a 3 engine wide variant designed for several key capabilities
2A …. Missile truck to unload a large number of long range missiles from a safe and invisible distance in support of other air combat fighters
2B …. Ship ambush with internal antiship missiles launched at high speed from a long standoff distance. Stealth from the front plus speed plus long range powerful antiship missile makes this an obvious new design direction.
2C …. The large weapons bay is ideal for Ground Support including releasing lots of weaponized drones or munitions. The large weapons bay makes an internal additional fuel tank possible for long range missions.
3…. I expect new missiles designed to fit inside the weapon’s Bay. Those PL15s could easily be much larger diameter.

The number of J-20 already in service is between 180 and 250, depending on what sources are used.
To put this number into perspective, most NATO airforces operate a few hundred combat aircraft, the number of J-20's alone is already bigger than most foreign airforces, not including the thousands of other aircraft used by the PLA Airforce/Navy and Army.
If the total number reaches 1,000 by 2030, the J-20 fleet alone will actually outnumber the combined number of combat jets operated by the UK, Germany, France and Italy. (The RAF has 130 modern jet fighters/Germany has 280 jet fighters/France has 200 front line combat jets, including F-35/Rafael/Typhoon and Tornado).
In other words, by 2030, the PLA Airforce could have as many J-20 alone, than the combined total number of modern jet fighters of Britain, Germany and France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands!

I don't know too much about the J-20 and its development but I would have presumed that it was specifically designed to fight in the same battlespace as F-35's and F-22's. The PLAAF will not be hamstrung by corporate interests that are counter-productive to the nation - and by this I'm specifically referencing all operators of the F-35 that are continuously being exploited by Lockheed Martin.
I honestly believe the J-20 is the best air superiority fighter in the world and I don't mean to dismiss the F-22 when I say this. However, the F-22 fleet is worn and nearing the end of its service life. With luck, these two awesome aircraft will never find themselves fighting against one another.

On the other hand there is a lot of evidence to suggest the other way around. First because J-20 has many anti-stealth features. It has canards, fins, and tail which are all anti-stealth features. F-22 only has tail. The miniaturization technology in China is not on the same level as in America so F-22 has or can have superior sensors.

it's really impossible, even as a Chinese, it is quite difficult for us to know any news about the progress of H20. What I can tell you is that the H20 may not appear in the short term. According to some rumors, the PLAAF has changed its development plan for stealth bombers for some reasons and even changed the original design. For instance, the 003 aircraft carrier was changed from steam ejection to electromagnetic ejection during construction in 2017 and it caused some delay of the entire project. So it may be several years before we see China's stealth bombers. All in all, this is a highly confidential matter, and ordinary Chinese citizens even an engineer in AVIC can't know anything about H20 :)

Impressive for J-20 program to seemingly have worked through it's engine woes, the most complex and important component any air superiority system. From all independent evaluations, it appears the J-20 airframe is not very stealthy though, so while it could go 'toe to toe' with other 5th gen aircraft, I wouldn't want to be a J-20 pilot in that scenario, as you're more of a 'target' than a threat, but the PLA is making enormous strides in military aircraft, perhaps the next generation will have the stealth to survive in a modern combat environment, and be truly competitive, it's just too bad this tech will likely be controlled based on the whims of a single authoritarian leader, let's hope by the 30s for more responsible and representative Chinese leadership.

I don't agree with you on guns.
First I think it's quite useful in combats, particularly for 5th gen fighters. It's a very lethal weapon in the hands of experienced pilots. Due to stealth capabilities, close combat of 5th gen are quite possible, if not more likely than 4th gen. Though modern fox2s are quite good, there's still a big chance they'll miss target. Would be quite awkward to fire both and miss and be left with no weapon.
The reasons j20 does not have a gun are probably 1 that China did not have a good gun when developing j20 (j10 has a mediocre Russian gun), and 2 the designer made a bet. A gun system is quite heavy and on a stealth fighter even more as there must also be a stealthy hatch that opens instantly when trigger is pulled. The weight saved by scraping gun could be used elsewhere like more fuel, avionics or missiles. Though nobody knows what will happen in real combats. Could be as awkward as F4 in Vietnam, or could be this is end of guns and beginning of drones.
The other thing is I don't think they'll put gun on j20. Too late they already made the bet.

You said it very well. During the Vietnam War, many F4s were shot down by MiGs, but it has been several decades now. Modern air to air missiles can be launched in a large off axis direction and have a much higher hit rate than machine guns. The J20's close range combat missile is only configured for self-defense. When you see a J20, the J10C next to it may already be eager to play dog fighting with you

This would be a waste to use on war with Taiwan. I’m sure the J-15, J-16, and J-10 are sufficient to counter ROCAFs F-16V, IDF, and Mirages.
