About Ingredients:
Join MIT-trained chemist and science educator George Zaidan as he tries to recreate everyday household products like toothpaste, lipstick, or shaving cream using only natural ingredients… and no recipe! He’ll have to decode long lists of intimidating chemical names, figure out what they all do, try and find natural substitutes, and then cook up the do-it-yourself versions in his chemistry lab (kitchen). While George may or may not succeed, we'll all learn something new and surprising about the products we take for granted every day.

What’s in Air Freshener? | Ingredients With George Zaidan (Episode 6)
• What’s in Air Freshene...

I really love this series! There should be a special channel to host this series :)
Quite Clever, very charming and an excellent presentation. Thank you!
Hey George Zaidan, why not take a look at those water filtration cartridges, like the ones used in Brita (tm) pitchers that people (like me) fill up and put into the fridge. Would it be possible to make one of those? (Well, not the plastic cartridges, but the guts to the filters.)
Hey great idea! I'll add it to the list.
Jack Linde
Those have activated charcoal in them which you can find pretty cheap on Amazon
the main library where i live has a plant wall in the entrance area.. and the air difference is insane.... insanely good
Would like to hear what you might add regarding use of commericial air fresheners designed for commercial buildings, offices, apartment buildings. Great video. Thank you. Will come again to this useful site!
That was as informative as usual, but also hilarious.
why thank you!
Love this series! Have you got hair conditioner on the list? Dishwasher tablets? Thank you.
Thanks! Hair conditioner is in a couple weeks! I'll add dishwasher tabs to the list.
Great series. I used to constantly use those gel freshner and freshner plug several years ago. So glad I'm off those.
Thanks!
I love this weird version of the Gonk you use. It's one of those songs a lot of people know but have no idea is a real song
i love watching your videos! You are so awesome!! !
:) thanks!
1:26 XD
Great job!
My god I
thanks :) :)
informative and entertaining :)
NASA's John C. Stennis Space Center did lots of research into plants and removal of indoor pollutants, people tend to forget about older research projects. A book is available by B.C. Wolverton called Eco-Friendly House Plants its ISBN 0-75380-046-2
This book has so much information on this subject and the care of the plants.
This is fantastic
this video was AWESOME
I love these videos
As I watch this I have a sonic diffuser running in the kitchen with lemon grass and mint essential oils. The house smells great and SUPPOSEDLY it is able to kill some bacteria and viruses in the air. Does it? Who knows. I know they work great for topical antibiotics but thats much more concentrated.
I like this guy!
Informative video! ...but what about the other ingredients? I am very allergic to air fresheners, perfumes (some more than others), chemical sprays (even some that have no noticible smells like some plug-in bug repelent). My reaction is different to different irritants... I would love to know exactly which ingredients cause which reaction. Lack of clear labels, testing and oversight seem to make this impossible.
Any insight you have on the topic would be great!
BTW, I like the fact that you mentioned getting rid of the source of bad smells and airing out the home. From what I have seen, air quality is five to ten times worse in the home than outside :-)
Thanks! Probably your best bet would be google scholar (or web of science, if you can get access to it). Though I think there isn't allll that much info out there.
your videos ate onreal thanks
thanks!
Only orange and lemon have limonene? what about other scent like floral base?
I would love to learn what's in laundry softeners, and is there actually an effective (both adding pleasant scent, and softening the textiles) homemade version of this
It's on the list!
George Zaidan Awesome! Thanks!
i loove your videos!!
thanks!
Wow.
hilarious! good stuff. :)
great video! is there anyway to make energy drink scented air fresheners that could go in my car?????
That is a fantastic question. I'm sure there must be. (But I don't know it.)
George Zaidan thanks!
My brother-in-law loves White Castle hamburgers and I've always thought it would be fun to have a car freshener scented White Castles. If you come up with an idea for that, I'd love to give it to him.
Rita's Bits Of Life haha that would be amazing. If we do an air freshener follow up, I'll work on it
Thanks George! Your videos are great. Every bit as good as Alton Brown.
Suggestions for your list: Hairspray, artificial sweeteners, face masks, hair removal creams, anti ageing products, hand creams, makeup removers, mascaras, eye liners, vegan - anything you can think of.
Thank you for these videos ^_^
Those hilarious transitions XD
While watching 'How Clean is Your House' Kim W used a few Denture tablets to clean something. It occurred to me that George Zaidan could totally tell me what's in those things. I'm thinking (maybe TMI, but: ) if denture tabs are safe and effective and gentle enough for old guy teeth, they would work for pre-soaking breast pads. So, George, what is in denture tablets? Are they on your list? Can they be added to your list?
hey good idea! will add to the list
Question, what about the other ingredients? Aerosols are known to cause a lot of issues and don't only have one ingredient. Plants don't completely freshen a house, but does give you oxygen and absorbs some unwanted things from the air. There's a lot of better essential oils to use than orange. I don't use anything for cleaning that isn't biodegradable and plant based, if there's a smell, I remove the source and spray some diluted essential oil mix around.
Yup there's a lot of research on particulates in indoor air -- check out the professors' names in the credits list and look up their research. Great stuff.
What is in Fabric conditioner.?
Do I boil the orange peels in the kitchen or do I bring the stove to my room? Asking for a friend.
Ya my mom has about 5 automatic air sprayers that are running every 30-20 minutes using multiple bottles a week. I hope its not a permanent effect on my body
What is that banging tune in the background at 4:25?
Smooth Jazz Gonk by JackBillPlatypus
I learnt from my old science textbook that if I stuck cloves into an orange and then hang it, it'll make a great air freshener. Well, except that it will eventually rot so yea
Yup, basically a slow release of limonene and clove scent :)
Cool
Why are some people so concerned of formaldehyde in air fresheners when they exposed daly in second hand cigarettes smoke which has far more formaldehyde than any air fresheners
Why does this guy think that the plant roots are the only source of VOC removal? NASA has plenty of research showing that the leafy surfaces of many plants do much the same thing simply by adsorbing the molecules in question. And they can be "reactivated" simply by wiping off the leaves with a wet cloth.
how about scented candles?
I think I'll probably do an episode on scents in general (my guess is that a few scents/mixtures are used in a lot of different products)
This doesn't really answer my question. Limenine is exactly the kind of air freshener that doesn't do what I want. Its not my wall, or I would put a hole in it. I have found several odorless air fresheners that use chemicals to do stuff to chemicals but they aren't specific. I'd like to know what the molecules in BO are specifically that cause odor, and a spray that can react chemically with them to neutralize them after the source of the odor is gone, in a room without good ventilation in a short time period, say 10 minutes.
Whatsnin cockroach killer if radiation cant kill then
Good question! I'll add it to the list.
Cockroaches aren't killed as much as paralyzed... They die from starvation
What about Hawaiian scent
1:24 cringe!! Don't ever do that again lol
I thought that was hilarious and also added an extra hint of drama to the presentation. A nice callback to memes of yesteryear and a good dismount on the landing. 5/5 stars.
I hope he does it in almost every video from this day forward.
VacivityLove WHAT??! It was funny as hell lol
Kayla Santos
I am on your team. They can never tear down what we love.
Can you do sunscreen please
Yes! It's on the list!
Should do an episode on instant hot chocolate
ooh great idea! will add to the list
I've been so stupid for using an air freshener for a year now. Will I be facing any long term health effects. Am I going to be okay?
What about baking soda???
Great question. I actually haven't seen a convincing explanation of how it works. But it does seem to work...
Your last words are what everyone should be doing since 2020
3:46 is is bad that i though of phil lester when i saw all of those plants
Hi, what about glue sticks?
hi
hi
what about air freshener that smell like other things, like lavender or baby powder?
hmmm baby powder would be really interesting... I wonder what that smell is
No wonder , everytime I switch on the Automatic freshener in my room I get horrible headaches, fatigue, red eyes and poor appetite.
I have almost no sense of smell (damaged olfactory nerves) so I’ve never understood why people’s like air fresheners. Most that have been strong enough for me to smell have been pretty awful. Do people really like those artificial scents? The same goes for laundry detergent - why do people buy scented laundry products? I buy the fragrance-free detergents and I like the lack of a strong scent. When I visit my parents, I’m struck by the odor of the towels in the bathroom. Strong, fake flowery scent. No thanks.
Here after room freshener got into my eyes 😂🙁
Yoj
You are holding a stick of butter while talking about hydrogenated vegetable oil. Maybe a stick of Crisco would be a better visual? Yes. Crisco comes in "sticks" now. Otherwise, great video!
How does Febreze work?
Good question - google cyclodextrin
I worked for an air freshener company for 19 years. We had a similar product. We would take the concentrated chemical and add it to fox urine. You could not smell the urine. It was unbelievable!
so wassup internet
I think he's cute 👏🏼
Who doesnt love 2009 memes?
The answer to people's flatulence is to expose the gas to the roots of a plant. "WHY DIDN'T I MARKET THAT!"
The public is slowly catching on. One day essential oil diffusers will become a garage sale item once everyone understands the air pollution being created releasing terpenes into household air.
Video ends at 0:07
i have a baby palm tree in my house no lie.
p
But whatever will commerce do with the gazillion air freshener products now on store shelves if we just open our windows? There goes the GDP.......
what is in a deodorant...
it's on the list!
what ? just plants ? i hope to see some cooking chemicals or something
Next episode... :)
This guy looks like he is bored of living
