Torsional eye movement, known as cycloversion and cyclovergence have a fascinating evolutionary history via our evolutionary ancestors that had eyes on the sides of their heads. Your eyes twist in this way whenever you tilt your head!

I'm not disagreeing I'm just saying its more your head is rolling, and less so your eyes.
I’ve experienced this orbital rotation when nodding off then snapping awake while my head bobbled forward and back. The brief moment it took my eyes to re-align, I could see the world, Horizon, rotate though my head was stationary. Very strange. Especially, when my eyes fail to re-align and feel stuck.
8:29 omg OMG thats so crazy, what im getting from this is that the reason why when you spin and spin and spin around on yourself then stop, your vision is tilted and when your eyes look around it sets back to this tilted position each time, slowly it reverts to normal. i never thought it was your eyes literally TWISTING THEMSELVES IN YOUR EYESOCKETS. this is truly mindblowing. thank you, for sharing this neat piece of info.

Fun fact... birds can't move their eyes in their head, so they use their neck muscles to stabilize their vision. That's why you see birds bobbing their head when they walk, it's because they keep their head still to maintain a steady image, then snap forward quickly onto the next position. It's similar to Steve's analogy about looking at trees when riding the train or in a car.

It's insane to think how our eyes can smoothly follow a slow moving object, and we're unable to replicate that movement without jumping if the moving object wasn't there.
If you actually slightly unfocus your eyes and then try smoothly move your eyes, you'll find that you can do it. This technique can sorta be useful when you are skimming a book for certain keywords.

How do you know?
I would guess it's the inner ear telling your brain that your head is tilted and your brain takes it into the reckoning. The whole world tilts at once, again letting the brain know what's going on. Tilting only the telly has the brain thinking 'Huh?'
Wow, same here, I always wondered why looking at the phone or reading while laying on the side was more difficult, didn't make sense until now

After all these years of being way more into 3d than most people and being able to do funky eye tricks, I never considered that crossing your eyes to become a single image may involve some sort of rotation of your eyes. Given that things can have a lot of depth variety in a single image, however, I do think some of that is a trick of our brain to see depth rather than physical eye movement.

Nice vid as always
The 2 middle pencils are supposed to merge but its really hard to keep it like that i had a hard time doing it
It helps to move your phone closer to your face, or it helped me anyways 😊👍
It also helps when you put your hands on the sides of your field fo vision, blocking the left image for your left eye and the right image for your right eye.
It's supposed to look like 3 pencils so that two of the four are overlapping and it will look 3D
The pencil didn't quite look 3D to me but it's a cool idea
When i was a kid, this happened to me while traveling in a car. I remember really focusing on a wheel of another car and for a split second I could see the pattern and sometimes even count the number of spokes. Of course, it was so fast that I couldn't be sure of those details. Now it makes sense!
The cyclo-motions are also counter-actions for supra- and infra-versions (aka up/down movement of the eye) because the contracting muscles to perform these motion are attached out of axis of the eye. That means every up/down movement of the eye also generate a rotation of the eye that has to be counter-rotated by the corresponding muscle.
This indeed is a big problem in a lot of ophthalmology-related diseases.

I’ve done something weird with my eyes since I was a kid and now do it a lot as an adult. When I was little I loved spot the difference pictures and could do them in record time , by crossing my eyes and overlapping the two images, any difference on the overlapping image I see seems to move or look lighter or darker ( just different) . Also the hidden image pictures can be seen instantly. I use this “ ability “ in so many different ways and has helped immensely. I’d love to hear if anyone else does this as I’ve never talked about it or heard of anyone else doing it. Thanks Steve.
