I used to hate fishing in the winter because I assumed you always have to fish slowly.
However, I was fishing in my pond this winter and couldn't get a bite fishing very slowly on the bottom, so I decided to speed up my retrieve and started catching bass. When I slowed my retrieve, I stopped getting bites.
Myth Busted! You Don't ALWAYS have to fish slow in the winter time.
I thrive on shallow-water fishing. When the bass are shallow, I can catch the heck out of them, which is another reason why I don't care for fishing in the winter. I always assumed the bass went deep to avoid the sudden changes in water temperature.
While fishing with my daughter this past winter, I began by casting into the middle of our pond without any luck when my daughter said she got a bite at the edge of the water. I was a little skeptical because I always thought You Must Go Deep in the winter, but I didn't have anything to lose, so I cast down the bank and immediately got a bite. I told her to copy what I was doing, and we ended up catching several fish that day.
Myth Busted! You Don't ALWAYS have to fish the deepest spot in cold water.
Call it nostalgia, but I would still rather fish from my kayak or the bank over a boat because, growing up, I mainly fished in ponds or from a kayak. I've never owned a fancy bass boat, but I can take my grandpa's 1989 Bass Tracker for a spin anytime I want.
So naturally, when I see EVERYONE on CZcams fishing from a boat during the winter, I just assumed that I would need a nice boat and fancy electronics to catch bass in cold water, and I have no desire to buy an expensive bass boat and then spend thousands more on electronics.
While it is a little tougher, you can catch fish from the shore in the winter; the best places to go are ponds and fishing docks on your local lake.
Fishing docks generally hold fish, thanks to the brush piles people place below them, and they act as cover for the fish from predators above.
Over the past few years, I caught lots of bass from the shore during the winter.
So I'd say Myth Busted! You Don't Always Have to Have a boat to catch bass in cold water.
