As others have commented,' If I Can Dream' is his MLK tribute performance - Elvis was devastated by MLK's murder. People tried to stop him from performing the song because it was too 'controversial'. But he went ahead & PASSIONATELY performed it on his special just 2 months after MLK's murder. Elvis himself was part Native American - he didn't see colour, he saw people. A true Gentleman who never forgot his roots, He grew up in poverty, dirt poor but humble and so kind as a result........he's still the King 👑

I hope people know the background of this song. *Martin Luther King* was killed before this show and it devastated him. He asked the songwriters to make a message song (he said he could not write songs himself) to try to unite blacks and white folks. Ref. "I have a Dream" speech. Also Bobby Kennedy were killed. It also was a shock to him.
After this very emotional performance, he cried and stated that he would never again sing a song that he did not believe in.
I like the older version of Elvis as he show his soul more. He had so much soul and grew up singing gospel in a church as a kid. It was a "black" church, and this affected him and he never saw colour and treated everyone with the same respect no matter what background or colour they had.

This is actually "middle Elvis" (age 33) from his famous 1968 "Comeback Special" where he performed live for the first time in some ten years. He had spent the previous ten years making movies and records but not appearing live. Elvis was highly influenced by gospel (he snuck off to black churches as a youngster, both alone and with friends, to listen to the music), as well as country and R&B. The mix is what made him untouchable as an artist/interpreter.
The face of Elvis at the end tells it all. The nation was CRYING OUT for answers. Elvis used his platform to make a DIFFERENCE. Everyone was asking WHY. WHY was MLK shot just 2 months before this taping? WHY was RFK killed DURING the production of this TV Special? Elvis lands a MONSTROUS message of hope here. THIS is what the 1960s needed upon leaving that decade of assassinations and race riots. Elvis had an amazing way to connect to every kind of person because of his PASSION. You KNOW he means every word. Elvis was different in every good way possible. A man who tried really hard to break down walls of racism. This song is the closest he ever got to that dream. This was his personal tribute to MLK. Its no wonder James Brown, Muhammad Ali, BB King, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, Sammy Davis, Medgar Evers and so many movers and shakers in the black community were either strong supporters and/or personal friends with this man.

Totally correct. He could sing any style of music: from gospel and country to rock 'n' roll, soul and even funk. You made some very pertinent points about his versatility and I enjoyed your reaction.
If I Can Dream is from his 1968 Comeback Special, Elvis sang this Dr King-inspired track with so much conviction and passion. He admired Dr King (some Elvis fans tend to claim that they were friends but there's no substantiated proof of this) and was devastated to hear of his murder.
I wish Elvis had sung more socially conscious songs as they really suited his voice. However, it's such a shame that the ones he did sing, with their powerful messages first heard in the 1960s, remain all too relevant today.

@@paulhiggins1577 Not really. Buddy and Bob were a country act in 1954 but Buddy decided to focus on Rock and Roll after opening for Elvis 3 times and then formed Buddy Holly and the Crickets in 1957. Elvis was already an international star in 1956.

This was a few months after Martin Luther Kings assassination..both that and assassination of Bobby Kennedy plus our boys getting killed in Vietnam was too much for him..it's a call for us to come together ❤
Yeah, if I recall correctly, it was recorded in June or July of 68 (of course it aired in December, being a Christmas special).
I love this look on him. I was born in 56 so this is the Elvis if my single digits.
Got to meet him once in a studio in Nashville with my best friend who's Dad worked there. He is was super nice to two 13 year olds fan hurling out and speechless. He teased us into laughing and talking.
To me, and I grew up with Elvis, Younger Elvis is from the 50s....This is Peak Elvis 68-72 and older Elvis 73-77 was his best vocally, just health took him down...So Sad

Chod, the song was released in 1968. From 1964-1972 everyone who was releasing music was trying to be relevant and tapping into the "PEACE" movement. Elvis was the perfect performer to transition from the crooner age songwriting to lyrics with substance. 1968 was an explosive year in America and one we haven't seen since. CNN did a four part series on this one year. I recommend doing 60's-70s music commentaries should watch it. It will help them understand the corebissues of where the musicians were coming from and what they were reacting to. Elvis really poured his heart out on this song!!

I was late coming to Elvis, my daughters got me into him, when we first got cable and they played his comeback special, they told me to watch and and we were quite mesmerised with his musicality and voice, on a personal point, my father always used to sing a song called "I will take you home again Kathleen " and I found an Elvis version we were all in tears, such a great performer!

In the music business, that is almost certainly not heard of! As far as I know, he is the ONLY ONE to be gone that long and have a successful comeback. Loretta Lynn took 4 years, to care for her dying husband, and made a successful comeback. EXTREMELY RARE for that to have happened! Also, as for being called KING, Elvis responded that there's only 1 KING, and that's JESUS CHRIST.

I liked both to but I think most people leaned toward his younger years because it was so sad to see him in the condition he was later on. He was such a dynamic soul and you knew he wasn’t in good health. He was such a force of nature for most everyone.

T remember this 1968 TV Comeback Special like it was yesterday and it was def Elvis in his prime. Another song to react to fron the Special is TRYING To GET To YOU. Classic Elvis. His favorite music was gospel & his only grammy awards were for his gospel recordings..
he was famous for hours before or after his concerts for just going to the piano & singing song after song in praise.
This was done in one take & when he got off stage he embraced his backing singers the sweet inspirations ( one who was whitney houston's mom ) broke down crying & ended up in the fetal position sobbing from the emotion of the moment

This performance happened on his 68 Special, which marked his return to live performances 7 yrs after primarily doing movies and just before he worked in Vegas. So this isn't real early Elvis. This song was written for Presley for that show. Elvis had an admiration for MLK who had just been assassinated. And that's partly what that song is about. Besides Jailhouse Rock a video called Mean Woman Blues from 57 shows a glimpse of what early Elvis was like.

This song was dedicated to MLK after he was killed that's why he sang it the way he did him and MLK were friends and he was really upset when MLK was killed and fyi elvis was born and raised in tupelo Mississippi in the getto and most all of his friends were of color that is where he got his swagger from another fact his back up singers the sweet inspirations the lead singer for them was Whitney Houstons mother right up front with elvis i was lucky enough to see him live in concert twice in 72 and I think I saw him in 74 i was really young but I remember it like it was yesterday something I will never ever forget blessing to be able to say I saw him live
Elvis was the best friend i ever had in my entire life. we met when i was 17 yrs old. I won a radio show contest and the prize was a day with Elvis but our friendship lasted past that one day in time. All the memories of my friend are tucked safe in my heart forever. i saw him numerous times he was amazing he was not only my friend but a big brother as well. I never will get over his death it haunts me everyday seeing him in video's dancing and singing breaks my heart because i know he is not here anymore my mind understands but my heart never will, i saw him a few weeks before he passed he said kiddo everything will be okay i said E. nothing will ever be okay again, i was crying so hard he gave me a little kiss on the cheek and said i love ya kiddo always remember that okay i said love ya too E. that was the last time i saw my friend alive again. Elvis Comeback special. Elvis was drafted in the army in 1962. When he came back, he spent the next several years doing corny movies. More than anything else, he wanted to perform live again. This special was carefully planned as a way to reintroduce Elvis, and included a lot of Elvis' old material. It was supposed to be a Christmas special. He was supposed to end it with a Christmas song. That's what his manager insisted on. During the Summer of 1968, there was racial unrest all over the country, and 50 thousand soldiers a year were being lost in Vietnam. A few months earlier, MLK was assasinated. Then Robert F. Kennedy was assasinated. A very troubled time in American history. Elvis was greatly inspired by MLK. He asked for a song to be written about racial unity and Martin Luther King's dream. That's where the DREAM came from, from MLK's speech. He got this wonderful song and decided to end his special with it. His manager Tom Parker wouldn't have any of it and insisted on a Christmas song. This was one of only a few times that Parker did not have his way. Also tne red neckerchief that Elvis wore was in rememberance of the lives that were being lost in Vietnam. Considered to be one of Elvis' very finest performances.

For me it's not about which version is better or even who sang it, it's about the song itself and what it represents. The fact that Elvis sang it was just an added bonus.
He sung this song as a tribute to MLK and JK . He was so upset about MLK being murdered that he had to do this song though advised not to by label as might damage his career , well as you see didnt listen . Great reaction

He actually knew dr. King and apparently when he got the news of the assassination he was on the set of a movie they were filming and they had to shut down their production for a day because Elvis went into a back room and curled up into a ball and just cried for hours. It breaks my heart to think that is still so much similar today.

People (45 years after he's gone) still call Elvis King of Rock'n roll, but he did not like that, he considerd that the only King was God, but I consider him to be the King of Music, but what do you think, is he good enough to be called a Music King?

There are some videos of when Elvis joking and messing up, he loved to joke around and pretend that he did not have control, but he had total control, he acctually conducted his musicans and back up choirs all the time !!
He is the only person to have 2 records gone to sell Gold and 2 to to sell Platinum since he died.
Elvis is also in almost every genre of Music Hall of Fame (5 that I'm sure of), no one else is in more then perhaps 2.
Not bad for someone who never took a single singing lesson, yes he sang in church so perhaps he learned a little there, right?

Something else that people tend to overlook:
He always conducts his musicans and backup singers, he never gets credit for being able to do that...
Then imagen you are a singer, you have great musicans, you have great backup singers, no Guest Artists, no Autotune, no Lipsinging and no Fireworks, now all is about your skill, could you handle that pressure?
That is what Elvis did in over 1000 concerts, despite having problems with his health, like his Glaucoma, the headlights must have hurt his eyes like crazy...
He sang over 700 songs, I wonder how he could remember them all, he never vrote a song himself, so he had to remember other peoples songs, well that in it self is amazing in it self...
By the way he had Glucomea and that must have been difficult being in the headlights all the time, that could be why he sometimes closes his eyes, but also sometimes squinting !!
Elvis suits was made of 100% Polyester, or 100 cotton (I'm not sure witch one), it was originally a karate suit, it was very light, but it was hot, so it made him sweat a lot, he got some bad press about that, but if you give it all then you will sweat, it should be positive, right?

This was after he returned from the service after 4 years. So he was mid 30 's during this. Do you get anything from this song. This song was written after his dear friend MLK WAS MURDERED he spoke of helping the race wars in the south by him and MLK healing it through song . When he was killed Elvis confided to a friend the pain he felt deep in his soul at the ⁹loss he felt. They talked about every feeling he felt. The friend took a bit but he wrote down every feeling he was told about this song the faith , hope and sorrow Elvis felt in his soul at this loss. When the song was written Elvis booked a local theater at 3 am and him his band and his back up singers were the only ones in the theater because he wanted everyone to hear and feel the sorrow and pain. People just really never got what he was about. And hff e loved every color nat tonality and he never saw a color of a man he looked at the so yuh l of people. Never be another Elvis.. EVER

So many times I get asked why I’m such an Elvis fan. If you would sit down, in a non-biased manner, watch this performance you would understand. . This man put everything in to this song. You could actually see the pain he was feeling.
During the filming of the Singer TV special, better known as The ‘68 Comeback Special, Colonel Parker insisted that Elvis end the special with a Christmas song, since it was to be aired later that year, in December. The actual filming was in June of 1968. Dr. King was killed in Memphis in April of 1968. Robert Kennedy was killed June 6, 1968. Elvis filmed this on June 27,1968. Elvis was aware of what was going on in this country. One of the few times Elvis went against the Colonel was when Elvis refused to close the special with a Christmas song. Elvis turned to the writers at NBC, and asked them to write an ending for the show. The two writers took Elvis to a room, sat him down, and let Elvis tell them what he was feeling. This song is what they came up with. Elvis dedicated this song to MLK and RFK.
I use to love to watch Elvis movies on TV when I was a kid. My favorite movie was his last movie he made "Change of Habit". A couple of songs from that movie "Rubbernecking" and "Let Us Pray".

This is the first Elvis reaction of yours that I've seen, so I don't know what you're considering 'older Elvis'. If it's from Vegas, then this video isn't much earlier than the Vegas videos that are out there. This was recorded somewhere around June of 1968 (for airing in December). The Vegas shows that circulate on CZcams were filmed in 1970 for the movie 'Elvis: That's the way it was'.
So there isn't that much of a time difference.

It was jan 1969 that he did all those recordings....American Sound Studios where he recorded over 36 songs in 12 days. he was only doing movie soundtracks in 67-68 with exception of the TV special, which only produced one new song.

They announced the release date as June 2022...the actor Austin Butler, who plays Elvis, just finished all his scenes..they have been filming it in Australia, where they built a set that looks like Memphis in the 50s and also the showroom of the International Hotel , supposedly to specs...
