Is there a way to rip them to .iso? The menus and interactive parts are honestly part of the experience and you get that with .iso's.

2023 This still works perfectly! Currently using this on my Windows 10 laptop since it still has a DVD player. Took 12-20 minutes for videos from 50 minutes to 2 hours long (with my laptop's configuration)! Not bad! Thank you SO much Howfinity!!!

Btw its not illegal to rip movies to your computer...you OWN them cause you purchased it, its just illegal to upload online or to make copies...but as for personal use its completely legal...that y every make mkv tutorial is still on youtube.
You're even alloved to rip movies you've rented or borrowed from your local library

Works great! Finally I can digitize a TV show I had DvD for but no retailer had a digital version. Found out that the "Title" selection was each episode.
You sir deserve tons of kudos! I had spent money on an app that did a horrible job digitizing old family videos (shot on 8mm but on dvd). Handbreak has been a godsend! Thanks to your tutorial, I was able to digitize old family videos from the 70s and the quality is very very good. I can now share them with the rest of my family. As someone who rips DVDs/Blu-Rays regularly, don't use Handbrake. Handbrake is more a Compression software. Say for example you have a 32 GB & you want ti download it on your phone, run it through handbrake & depending on your encoding settings, it'll downsize the video. You might lose quality but again, that depends on your settings. If you want to rip movies, I recommemd either Make MKV or DVDFab. Be warned though, after a while, you might be asked to purchase DVDFab after the free trial is up.
Excuse me if this is an obvious question, since I know nothing about ripping commercial dvds, but can Make MKV be used to rip and transfer a DVD to another blank DVD? I mean, identical quality, menus, subtitles, and everything else? I'm just wondering if there is an easy and free way to make a 1:1 copy that plays identical on any player. Thank you!

as of 04-20-2024 this works and the program is legit. i have a m1 imac as well as superdrive from apple over usb c dongle.
I used the Handbrake to rip my movie discs before, but I think it’s too complex for me, so I choose anther one called DumboFab DVD Ripper which is found in a software site. The simple interface and the clear guide help me rip the movie DVD easily. And it can convert into many other formats. It’s so cool! I have got even better experience.
Does it work better I’m having such a complicated time with handbreak on my windows gaming pc. I get a message after selecting a file that says “No valid source or titles found” maybe I’m just a techtard now

Thanks! This was super helpful and and will finally let me digitize my movies. However, I do have problems with DVDs that have several episodes of a TV series. Hand Brake only copies the first episode of each DVD. Is there any way I can fix this?

Technically it is not illegal to back it up. Becomes a crime when you distribute the files. To be convicted it would need to be proven that distribution has occurred. This is why DVD ripping software is legal just most cost money.
What if you rent the movie? Then it definitely illegal
Then it is not just backing it up. It is committing fraudulent piracy.

I’m trying to rip a DVD with 4 scenes and when I open it on handbrake it acknowledges all 4 scenes as 57 mins, yet it only rips the first scene which is just under 5 mins...any idea what’s up??
Years ago i tried handbrake and found the interface was over my head. i'll give it another go today and see if i like it - you of corurse make it look simple :)

Would it be quicker to move the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS to the pc first then run through handbrake?
when i attempt to do it, it gives me an error message saying
"No titles found
your source may be copy protected badly mastered, or in a file format Handbrake does not support" and tells me to go to a website that no longer exists.
or it just completely crashing the program.
Use Make MKV. Handbrake is a compression software.

I just looked on Amazon and that dvd player is not available anymore. Is there another one you’d recommend?
The instruction is good however it would be helpfully if the windows were expanded so the visuals were not so ridiculously small. The version of handbrake I downloaded in late 2019 has a different layout than what you used so it is harder to follow along when you speed through the details with such small visuals.

I have 2 questions
1: if I were to put a dvds files on my computer, would the disc itself still play what I downloaded on my computer in a different DVD player?
2: with the files, could I possibly upload them to video sharing websites like this one (CZcams)?
Is there a way I can download them and make them into 4K resolution? Or does this process only allow a set resolution like 720-1080p

"MAC" I want to put my dvd collection on to portable hard drives. I have over 500 plus bluray and regular dvd's. once I get the dvd's on a hard drive via external disc drive to portable HD will it make a difference between bluray and normal dvd's as to will they be playable to a TV with a built in media player? If no internal media player on TV with a media player will everything work the way it is suppose to? The tv's I have are newer with installed apps in the TV so I am assuming they have media players installed....
Also to play in my pick up truck via USB APPLE "CAR PLAY" to screen how do I format the or what format do I make the the dvd's onto the portable HD? Will the two be compatible for car play and a normal TV at home. "VISIO/SAMSUNG"?

Heey i was following your video on how to rip dvds. I need help since I got one dvd that after I start the longest one like you say. It goes fine but then 10 min later it stops like it is done. But it have only taken 110-140 kbit. It is only that one that does that all my other ones gets completed both before and after I tried that dvd. Have tried multiple times.
I've got quite a few DVD's to rip and store on my computer, how big will the file be after you rip it? Can you compact the file so you can store more?
I might start doing this but when you rip the dvd on it, will the dvd disc data be erased?

If I'm not ripping BluRay discs, do I need a BluRay player? Can I used an older (2014) PLDS DVD+RW DH-16AES) optical drive to rip plain old DVDs?

Re- that samsung blu ray writer you showed, to burn large HD files, can I do this directly with the samsung, or first, do I need a software blu ray burning program installed on the computer? .......I noticed a problem on Windows 10 - having the computer plug or WIFI connected to the internet while attempting to rip a DVD will interfere with the ripping process......ditto for burning a disc....best to yank out the ethernet plug/disable wifi first

Worked for some DVDs but on one the chapters come out all mixed up in random order. Tried reinstalling Handbrake and the suggested .dll file but still have the problem. BTW, the reason for the different Handbrake interface is that they updated the interface sometime in the last year or so but the functionality is still there. HELP
Several months ago I downloaded Handbrake per your video and the link noted below. I had no problem then. Today, Dec 28, 2020 I tried several times and keep getting an image that notes "no valid source found" and the image is greyed out over different colored pastel vertical bars. The image doesn't look like the one in your video. I'm uncertain why this is happening. The only change to my laptop is I upgraded recently to Big Sur from Mojave. Suggestions? Please advise.
