I have over 600-700 dvds and blu-ray videos and have been looking for a simple and easy process of digitizing these videos to either an internal or external hard drive. This video is excellent and has answered all my questions. Thanks.
*I tried Handbrake and VLC and neither worked as easily and flawlessly as MakeMKV. You are a lifesaver sir. Thank you!!!!*
Thanks! This has been on my To Do list for a while. You’ve saved me the time and effort I’d have spent researching apps!
Glad I could help!
@@rohanniko6768 Maybe develop your integrity before your hacking skills
Thanks. Now I have some idea of what to buy. And I am a very thankful boomer that you actually walked through the installation and set up of software, as well as what cables/ accessories I might need.
Very well done. Simple and easy to follow, just like it should be.
There's nothing about this video that I did not understand.
It's gonna take me a while to digitize ALL my DVDs!
An excellent tutorial. I just wanted to add that I compress (using VLC) and make smaller files and have filled up a 4TB Samsung QVO 860 SSD. My Roku reads all files from the SSD (at capacity) and plays them flawlessly. I know most have said 2TB is Roku's top tier, but my 4TB SSD runs perfectly on it, even filled to capacity. This may have something to do with less power for an SSD, though.
Many thanks for your video, been waiting ages to find a way of converting my own dvds to watch on electronic devices for when I’m on my holidays.Very straightforward and easy to understand thanks once again👍
Tried it today april 1st and it still works
thanks for the video!
Thank you so much for making this video. Your voice also lowered my blood pressure. 😄
Hi Jason. Great video. Thanks for showing how to do this and providing the product links. Very helpful :)) Thumbs up!!
Straight forward and to the point. That should earn you an award….
Great video, and thanks for the advice on the drive size. I have a ton of discs and probably would have bought something a lot larger than 2 TB then wondered why it wouldn’t load.
Exactly what I was looking for. Right to the point.
What a GREAT help. I have been trying to find a way to record my DVD onto USP to use on my projector. I am showing Christmas movies in my yard this year.
This was very informative and will simplify taking movies with us in our 5th wheel trailer. I did find that I had to convert my external hard drive to exFAT format (MAC OS) because the file sizes were too large otherwise. Once that was done the conversion worked great. Thank you for the tutorial!
Quick Update - Found that my Samsung TV does not read exFAT drives. It prefers NTFS, which MAC OS does not natively write to. Fortunately there is a utility called NTFS for Mac online from Paragon Software (paragon-software.com). A $15 downloadable (includes 14 day trial) and now I'm up and running. Confirmed that the Samsung TV can now read the drive and the movies play great!
Thank you very much! Your instructions were clear easy to follow.
🇨🇦/🇺🇸... Exactly what I was looking for... thank you!
Good video. Could almost make a separate video on the Linux install.
Very clear and helpful.
Thanks! You really explain simply 👍🏻
Amazing thanks! I'm sure amazon won't complain about the extra business.
Great Video! Thank you for making it!
Well, what if you want mp4 files and not MKV. I tried to watch a movie that was ripped on MKV and Windows Media Player couldn't read it. It didn't read the codec.
Take a look at this other video: czcams.com/video/Z9xarB6S3cQ/video.html. It shows you how you can use Handbrake to convert the MKV to MP4. I do that in a 2 step process for all of my movies.
Great tutorial bought the hub but it’s not supported with the tv I’m using is there another way it lags when I just plug the hard drive to my tv please help
Hello
Thanks for the great video.
I am trying to copy dvds consisting of 5 episodes in each cd (24 mins each). Both softwares you mentioned read that dvds, but it keeps on disconnecting and connecting every now and then. The usb is wire well connected and the cd is well inserted. I also receive a windows notification (autoplwy) saying the dvd is inserted once again. Im using microsoft surface pro laptop. Did all the steps you did, but using a different dvd/cd hard drive burner. I should not that it converted some files.
You probably have an issue witht he USB connection. It may be the wrong USB 2/3 type or the USB port on your computer is not set to the correct speed. That's often what makes the DVD disconnect.
This was a great and simple explanation, to an easy to use conversion program, that works amazingly! Since this program does work so well(Completely hassle free, unlike VLC), and the MKV files now play on Windows media players without any issue, I'm in the process of FINALLY being able to digitize my extensive DVD collection!
I do have one question though. Why do you like to create a separate folder for each movie(2:34)? It just seems like all those folders would be a waste of space. And since you need all the space you can get(since MKV files are so large), I just wondered if there was a specific reason for it or is that just a personal preference of yours?
Thx again for the great and very helpful video!
It doesn't need to be a folder. I move them to a single list so that they show up as a clean list on the Roku. From the folder I am able to run the conversion to compress those files before I put them on an SSD to connect to the Roku.
@@SeleTraining Ok Thanks. I'm just starting my "conversion journey" lol, so I haven't even looked into compression or exactly which other programs I'll need to use to view them later(Likely Windows apps for now).
I'm about to watch your next video on this subject, and then once I give it a try I'm sure I'll bother you again with a couple more questions, for clarification's sake! Thanks again for the helpful info!
Just started doing this, some movies work great but others can't get rid of subtitles. Would appreciate any help.
Some DVD’s will have a regular version and a subtitle version. Check to make sure you convert the correct file.
Thank you for providing this no nonsense tutorial. I have upwards of 1500 DVDs including Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D movies. Often I won't recognize a title without looking at the case. Is there a way I can add info to a digitized copy's title at the time of copying to help recognize the movie or will I simply have to rename the file afterwards? I currently have my collection alphabetized in specific genres. How can I view a play list of movies in their respective genres once they're digitized?
I use Handbrake to convert the files and compress the size. It has an option to name the files during conversion.
it's best to use. makeMKV and not handbreak cuz that only have a free that only let me rip 10 mins of a movie i wanted a digital copy of.
Hi Sele, I noticed in your description you mention the Roku Ultra in which I just purchased their latest model, I just want to make sure if I option for the MKV format over MP4 will Roku support the MKV?
I plan on copying my Movie collection to my NAS and streaming to my Roku via Plex.
Thanks
It works with both but I’ve chosen MP4 since it is more common. Just be aware the Roku may limit your attached storage to 2TB.
You mention Haanbrake in your other video. You can rip directly from DVD through Handbrake.
Yes but Handbrake does not work on some protected DVDs.
@@SeleTraining That great that Handbrake works for some. Is there a reason we do not choose MP4 format here?
@@jodidallaire MP4 works but I've noticed when you have very large files it can give you trouble.
don't listen to cuz i've convered my movies to mp4 and they play great with no trouble.
Great Info. thank you. What is your opinion on using a media server over wifi?
That works well too. Get the 2020 version of the Roku Ultra if you do that because it has faster WiFi.
Nice, now I'll just download my 99999999999999 movies which will 99999999999999999999999999999 hours
Hello, I just came across your viedo. That you for the very detailed instruction. I did have one issue & hope you can help. My video converted just as instructed, however, It has no audio. Is there something maybe I forgot to select?
There are multiples files on the DVD. You may have picked one without sound.
Did Exactly as you stated and everything is great...except...when I go into the file on the external drive, how come the picture is just a default icon instead of the movie icon like yours shows?
The icon showing is based on the default app set to that file type. You may need to set the default.
Very well explained. Aloha!
I am wanting to put on a flash drive so I can watch on the cars DVD player will this work? I also have an iMac and wondering if any external cd drive will work. I just want to do regular dvds. Thanks for the help
It will work as long as you have the correct file format that works with your cars DVD player and it has a USB connection. The external DVD R/W I recommended in the video will work with Mac or PC.
Wow you made it so simple. 👍🏼 Always wondered.
Now lets think, say it takes 30 min per video digitizing, how many days it would take to do a 800 + collection 🧐.....good grief 😂. Cheers 🍻
Yes, a bunch of work. I spent many days coverting my 250+ video collection.
"Okay Google, set timer for 30 minutes." ;)
Are all these the latest and updated version items for 2023? or do toy have updated video & links of what's needed?
Thank you.
These are the correct apps and best way to do this in 2023.
Can you save the files to Dropbox instead of a physical hard drive? I have like 2 TB of storage I’m paying for already on Dropbox. Then theoretically cast to TV to watch? ;/
You can save the files to any location.
I’ve tried this before with other software and ran into encryption issues. Does the MKV software work on all videos? Thank you
Yes. I have not found a DVD that didn’t work yet.
Hello. Could you please help me in finding a response to my inquiry that is how can i generate excel workbook from templates ? Is there any free add-on can help? Or something like that. Thanks in advance
If you have a newer version of Excel for Office 365 you can select New from the menu when you open Excel and it gives you a long list of templates to select from to create a new spreadsheet. Also, if you create a spreadsheet you can save it as a template by choosing the Save as Type: Excel Template.
Can u convert your private dvd and upload the digitized video to your own CZcams Channel and share & play on CZcams.
Yes. As long as you don't violate any copyright you can load up CZcams with all your home video recordings.
Outstanding thanks for this tutorial:)
Glad it was helpful!
@@SeleTraining thank you for this (I used a diffrent software)
Hi there. Thanks for the straight forward video! Wanted to ask about foreign films and getting the english subtitles for a japanese language dvd?
I haven't tried to see how it works with subtitles but I believe some DVD's contain multiple language versions such that you can convert the one of your choice.
Ty for this video… very ease process…
I would like to combine a 2 disk set. How do I make this happen?
I don’t believe either of these tools will let you combine videos. The only option I see is to use a video editing tool or online site that lets you edit and splice the videos into one.
I bought the winx software from your link but it is nothing like what you showed.
Is there any alternative way to do this?
Thank you for this video. Are there any solutions for streaming from the external drive? (like PLEX?)
If you havent found something like this. Plex works well, especially for LAN streaming.
thank you
Is there an external device that will allow for External USB DVD and Blu-ray Reader/Burner Combo, but also CD burning in the same unit?
Yes the link in the description of the video is one I recommend
@@SeleTraining Perfect, thanks your video really puts it all together in one spot.
Hi. This is only for windows. Can you recommend an app for a mac?
Excellent video. I subscribed...

Can I HDMI cable the Storage Drive into the smart tv, and use a tablet to interface with the storage drive? Something has to RUN the storage drive right? Or are their smart TV apps that can do that?
Could use the new XBOX to "talk" or run / connect to the storage drive?
HDMI will only connect video and sound from a device with a player. You can connect the hard drive to a smart TV using USB if your TV has one and then a multimedia app on the smartTV can play the videos. Alternatively you can connect the hard drive to your PC and an HDMI cable from your PC to the TV. Then use your PC to play videos to the TV.
@@SeleTraining Ok. I do need something "PLAYING" the DVD movie file of course. So there ARE multimedia apps for a smart TV that can USB connect (Still not sure why the connector cable cannot be HDMI since it has better resolution?) to the storage drive, read the files/play the film. So I can use the APP on the Smart TV to interface/control the hardwired (I am old school and prefer hardwire whenever I can) storage drive via my smart TV remote?
@@azuldefiler674 Yes. I have a smart TV with Roku built-in and I can plug a hard drive to the USB port on the TV and then run the multimedia app that comes with Roku to see all my videos and play them from a menu. Many smart TV's come with a USB port and an option somewhere in the menus or with an app to play those videos. HDMI is not a communication port like USB. It only serves video output so an app can't control data with it. You'll still get full resolution with USB and it will match the source resolution of the video file on your hard drive. With my Roku TV I use the multimedia app with my Roku remote. That lets me scroll though the videos on my hard drive and play them. This is one reason I recommend the Roku Ultra because it has the best apps and best remote experience compared to others I have used in the past.
I own a bunch of seasons from my favorite shows rather than carry all the dads around, I'd like to make compilation dvds with select episodes, kind of like a mix tape with my favorite songs. Will this help me?
The default display is in name order so you can name them by episode. You can also put them in their own folder.
@Sele Training OK this device and software will help me make a mix dvd so my kids can watch on any DVD player?
Thank You, Thank you, Thank you
You are very welcome
Does this also work with country code 2 DVDs? I live in the US but have dozens of German DVDs. Can I use the same technique?
I haven't used it with other country codes but I suspect it will work. You may want to check with support on the vendors website to confirm.
I purchases the reader but my laptop is not connecting with the blu-ray reader. Any suggestions?
It uses a standard driver so it should be automatic. You can go to Device Manager and scan for new devices and it should find it. Make sure you have the correct USB connection
@@SeleTraining thanks. Working very well now💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾
Do you know any program that would do the same thing just for music? Thanks Toni
There are a number of options to convert a music CD to mp3 files. I haven’t reviewed any yet but look for an mp3 converter. The Roku will also play Those files along with movies.
Love this
I've been looking for tutorials of this kind. I want to do this for Plex on my Roku Ultra, so that I can watch my movies when I travel to see a friend. Is this possible?
You can load the movies to Plex but if you have an external hard drive the Roku will show all of your movies in the media player where you can play them directly.
What video player are you using on your computer?
I have VLC and the built in Windows video player.
is it normal for the initial opening of the disc to take 10-20 minutes?
Some have encryption with lots of files that can slow down the process dramatically
thank you so much for the info...I will try not to bug you anymore
how do get pass the pop up for buying it will not let rip my blue ray
Make sure to use the link in the description of the video. It will prompt you for a code or you can bypass that to run the free version.
Does this end up working with movies anywhere? I want to try out a copy of iron man with this but idk if it can synchronize
I’ve been able to do it with every DVD So far
Can this work for dvd with home movies?
Yes.
Hi there, Count me one who has some cataloging to do. I WILL clear those three shelves from my bookcase!
My question is, will this External USB hard drive that is designed for the computer, also be able to be played
on my 2013 Sam smart tv? Will I be outclassing my TV's ports by using this hard drive?
See description below.
Could I also ask, are all external hard drive capable of holding Video content? Thanks fellow librarian!
Ad description: Backup Plus Slim 2TB External Hard Drive Portable HDD - Black USB 3.0 for PC Laptop and Mac, 1 Year Mylio Create, 2 Months Adobe CC Photography
It should work on older USB as well. The cable will make it USB 2.0 instead of 3.0 which will slow down the speed for older equipment.
@@SeleTraining Well this is a relief! Could I again ask, are all external hard drives capable of holding video content?
Many thanks!
@@momzilla9491 Yes, any external device will store video content. However, you just have to make sure that the external device will work with the TV or computer correctly and the file formats are acceptable.
@@SeleTraining Thank you so much for your input. You are right, any file created needs to have the right extension, to make it executable when running a program.
I started learning about it the other day.
Now I just need a big external hard drive!
Laughing, I watched this guy record onto VHS, from his laptop. Hey, why not?
I'm going to find and watch it again.
Happy Friday.
Will a USB 3.0 drive work as well?
Does this method preserve the onscreen menus?
No. This is simply to convert the video to a digital file.
@@SeleTraining Thank you
No chance. I had an external drive full of films that suddenly became corrupted and unplayable a few years ago. Digital files may suit casual film viewers or once-watch movies but proper collectors and cinephiles will always want to stick with physical media.
That’s why you have backups
Can you do this conversion from a laptop or must it be a desktop?
Any PC will work.
Does this program only make MKV files or does it also make mp4 files?
It will do both
Please could you explain how as I really don't want to have to convert all 3000+ dvds after making the mkv file 😅
I'm getting 'Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST: READ OF SCRAMBLED SECTOR WITHOUT AUTHENTICATION' occurred while reading... huh? It's a legit disk, not pirated or anything!!
It's protection embedded on the disc itself to stop people from ripping said disc to their PC. Some programs can bypass this, some can't.
Great😊
Do dvd writers work as well?
You can use many others. This one is a good quality one that works well for me.
do you know why its dont work i cant open it on my files???
Are you using makemkv?
@@SeleTraining yes!! :(
Makemkv is meant to read from a DVD and then Handbrake can be used to convert those files.
@@SeleTraining handbrake? what is that?
