    An excellent tutorial. I just wanted to add that I compress (using VLC) and make smaller files and have filled up a 4TB Samsung QVO 860 SSD. My Roku reads all files from the SSD (at capacity) and plays them flawlessly. I know most have said 2TB is Roku's top tier, but my 4TB SSD runs perfectly on it, even filled to capacity. This may have something to do with less power for an SSD, though.

      Quick Update - Found that my Samsung TV does not read exFAT drives. It prefers NTFS, which MAC OS does not natively write to. Fortunately there is a utility called NTFS for Mac online from Paragon Software (paragon-software.com). A $15 downloadable (includes 14 day trial) and now I'm up and running. Confirmed that the Samsung TV can now read the drive and the movies play great!

    Hello
    Thanks for the great video.
    I am trying to copy dvds consisting of 5 episodes in each cd (24 mins each). Both softwares you mentioned read that dvds, but it keeps on disconnecting and connecting every now and then. The usb is wire well connected and the cd is well inserted. I also receive a windows notification (autoplwy) saying the dvd is inserted once again. Im using microsoft surface pro laptop. Did all the steps you did, but using a different dvd/cd hard drive burner. I should not that it converted some files.

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  Před rokem

      You probably have an issue witht he USB connection. It may be the wrong USB 2/3 type or the USB port on your computer is not set to the correct speed. That's often what makes the DVD disconnect.

  • @Reapersmovies
    @Reapersmovies Před 2 lety +1

    This was a great and simple explanation, to an easy to use conversion program, that works amazingly! Since this program does work so well(Completely hassle free, unlike VLC), and the MKV files now play on Windows media players without any issue, I'm in the process of FINALLY being able to digitize my extensive DVD collection!
    I do have one question though. Why do you like to create a separate folder for each movie(2:34)? It just seems like all those folders would be a waste of space. And since you need all the space you can get(since MKV files are so large), I just wondered if there was a specific reason for it or is that just a personal preference of yours?
    Thx again for the great and very helpful video!

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  Před 2 lety

      It doesn't need to be a folder. I move them to a single list so that they show up as a clean list on the Roku. From the folder I am able to run the conversion to compress those files before I put them on an SSD to connect to the Roku.

Is there a way I can add info to a digitized copy's title at the time of copying to help recognize the movie or will I simply have to rename the file afterwards? HDMI will only connect video and sound from a device with a player. You can connect the hard drive to a smart TV using USB if your TV has one and then a multimedia app on the smartTV can play the videos. Alternatively you can connect the hard drive to your PC and an HDMI cable from your PC to the TV. Then use your PC to play videos to the TV.

      @@SeleTraining Ok. I do need something "PLAYING" the DVD movie file of course. So there ARE multimedia apps for a smart TV that can USB connect (Still not sure why the connector cable cannot be HDMI since it has better resolution?) to the storage drive, read the files/play the film. So I can use the APP on the Smart TV to interface/control the hardwired (I am old school and prefer hardwire whenever I can) storage drive via my smart TV remote?

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  Před 2 lety +1

      @@azuldefiler674 Yes. I have a smart TV with Roku built-in and I can plug a hard drive to the USB port on the TV and then run the multimedia app that comes with Roku to see all my videos and play them from a menu. Many smart TV's come with a USB port and an option somewhere in the menus or with an app to play those videos. HDMI is not a communication port like USB. It only serves video output so an app can't control data with it. You'll still get full resolution with USB and it will match the source resolution of the video file on your hard drive. With my Roku TV I use the multimedia app with my Roku remote. That lets me scroll though the videos on my hard drive and play them. This is one reason I recommend the Roku Ultra because it has the best apps and best remote experience compared to others I have used in the past.

      It should work on older USB as well. The cable will make it USB 2.0 instead of 3.0 which will slow down the speed for older equipment.

      @@momzilla9491 Yes, any external device will store video content. However, you just have to make sure that the external device will work with the TV or computer correctly and the file formats are acceptable.

      @@SeleTraining Thank you so much for your input. You are right, any file created needs to have the right extension, to make it executable when running a program.
      I started learning about it the other day.
      Now I just need a big external hard drive!
      Laughing, I watched this guy record onto VHS, from his laptop. Hey, why not?
      I'm going to find and watch it again.

    No chance. I had an external drive full of films that suddenly became corrupted and unplayable a few years ago. Digital files may suit casual film viewers or once-watch movies but proper collectors and cinephiles will always want to stick with physical media.

      It's protection embedded on the disc itself to stop people from ripping said disc to their PC. Some programs can bypass this, some can't.
