This really takes me back to my childhood. I remember if a good movie like JAWS was coming on, it would come on at 8 pm and bed time for me and my brother was 9 pm, but my parents would make an exception and let us stay up an hour past bed time to finish watching the movie. Those were the days!
This promo just reduced me to being the five year old who sneaked into the living room to watch this forbidden movie while my parents were entertaining friends. It terrified me and I didn't sleep all night. Good times.
my dad taped this movie that night he had purchased a 4 hrs vcr the year before when they first came out I think he told me it was about $1000 dollars. This is how I first saw jaws I was 9 years old that shark scared me to death the movie just turned 40 years old last week.
Ernie Anderson is arguably the greatest voice over guy ever!! Not to mention, to talk up a movie like this; definitely one of my favs. Shaw totally made this film!
OMG !!!! I remember this date clear as a bell!!! I remember waiting for Nov.4th for JAWS to come on. I was 8 years old and BEGGED my parents to let me watch it !!! WOW!!! Never thought I'd EVER see this ad....I am freaking!!!! Thanks SO MUCH for posting this....wow...just...wow.
I was about to turn 6 years old in a few days when this aired. It was my first step into thrillers and horror movies. I anxiously waited all day for JAWS to air that night and my parents let me stay up late to watch it.
WOW! I Remember I was sooooo sick I couldn't even stand up without throwing up. All I could do was lay there, and this was the same night JAWS premired on tv. I was 8 years old, and it was the 1st time I had ever seen JAWS. Even though I was that sick, I laid there watching this and LOVE the whole movie! I LOVE it to this very day.
OMG Ernie Anderson was the best announcer ever. I swear I have a memory of another broadcast on ABC a few years later when Ernie did the intro but all he said at the end of the highlights was "Tonight....Jaws."
I remember this night very well.. It was broadcast after a Mork & Mindy episode. Had to ask my parents if I could stay up to watch this. Although it was edited, there were some additional scenes (outtakes) added. Too bad Universal, did not include this version as a Blu Ray extra. Great times!!
Those voiceovers were amazing, just the right amount of "dramatic effect" Until now, I never knew the guys name who was responsible. The 70's were a great time!
I'd seen JAWS2 in the theater as a 5 year old. I was only able to stay up for the first half hour of this and then I had to go to bed (no VCR yet 😞). It would be 3 more years until I finally saw the whole film when it replayed in a local theater in '82. I can't even count how many times I've seen it since, but this was my introduction to one of the greatest monster films of all time.
I am amazed that you have this on tape. Thanks for posting. I remember this night vividly! I had seen the movie three times at the theater in 1975. TV was so exciting back then with only a handful of channels.
What I like about it is that everybody who watched the movie had something to talk about the next day. People at work can have a watercooler chat. The kids at school can talk about it on the bus.
Back before home video it was an event when a blockbuster movie came to television! That was the only way you could see it, unless it was re-released in the theaters, which they did from time to time. Today we are spoiled, we can see our favorite movie whenever we want.
I remember this night, I was 9 years old. I got in trouble for watching it so me and my sister sneaked downstairs and watched it on a different tv. It was the first time I ever watched Jaws. I had nightmares for months. I think this was one of the highest rated movies ever shown on ABC when it was shown that night.
I remember this really well .. I was too young to see Jaws when it was released , I was only 4 .. but even at that age I was fascinated by everything I saw of Jaws - the first thing was the paperback book cover at our local department store .. I just stared at the awesome artwork on the cover .. I was fascinated by that artwork / the shark .. then just seeing pictures in magazines .. seeing the TV spots .. etc .. my parents still said I was too young to see Jaws 2 in '78 (when I was 7) .. but the following year (79) it was shown on ABC .. I was so excited to see it .. and I was loving it .. but .. the last thing I remembered was when Hooper was taking pictures of the shark in the ORCA and he told Brody to get out on the pulpit so he had something in the foreground to give it scale .. shortly after that there was a commercial break and I fell asleep during the commercials .. ugh ... Then I woke up in the morning and I couldn't believe my parents or brothers didn't wake me up to see the end ... I finally got to see it in its entirety in '83 when we were able to rent it on VHS from our local Mom & Pop video store .. and we were in the waiting list for about a month ... I watched it 5 times ove the 2 days we had it out for rent
thats great i remember the first time i saw jaws i was like 10 or 11 i had seen parts of them over the years but it had just come out on dvd and my mom told me 2 get it we had just got a new tv with a dvd player built in i wasnt really sure if i wanted it but then i just got it we all sat down to watch it and from start 2 finish i couldn't take my eyes off the screen this movie made me love movies more than ever i love it
I saw JAWS for the first time that night. I was two.... i stopped watching at the Kintner attack, was scared shitless. But as i grew older I became obsessed with getting over the fear. I read the book when i was 8. T hen watched the movie many times over. I also studdied sharks on my own time. God I love this movie. I still watch it, i have it on DVD... had it on VHS before... fond memories.
Saw Jaws in the theatre in 1975 ... I was THREE years old! My brother got stuck baby sitting me and had a date ... brought me aong for the date ... and I STILL can't even go into a pool alone! haha!
In my opinion, Jaws-THE GREATEST FILM OF ALL TIME or E-V-E-R MADE-as well as my personal FAVORITE OF ALL TIME! In fact, I watch Jaws, and its sequels, (A LOT) MORE than ANY OTHER mainstream film!
WOW! Thanks so much for posting this! This was at a time when a Network Premiere of a movie like "Jaws" was a true event. Back then, movies would air on television and then disappear for a year or more. Now, if you miss the movie when it airs it's no big deal because then either air 2 or 3 showings back to back or you could have recorded it on DVR. This was a true event when it aired on ABC. Thanks so much for posting. This is my all time favorite film.
WOW THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS I've been regularly checking CZcams for over a year for this bumper. As a kid I had recorded this along with the movie on audio cassette on that night and spent the following years listening to it every day. I had memorized this sucker, and years later I lost the tape. I sooooooooo vividly recall that night: my wild anticipation as I set up my dad's tape recorder, the fresh smell of fall breeze coming into the open window... *Nostalgia factor: all knobs go to 11.
i saw jaws in the theaters was i was very young and i remember watching this on that sunday night when i was 11. the ads they created for weeks leading up to the TV debut and the ads they played during the movie were amazingly tense. growing up near martha's vineyard, jaws will always strike a strong, nostalgiac chord in my heart.
Fun fact: The announcer Ernie Anderson is the father of acclaimed film director Paul Thomas Anderson, who made famous movies like Magnolia, Boogie Nights, and There Will Be Blood.
My parents must’ve been deranged, or more likely, knew that I was deranged, so they took me to see Jaws when I was about four. I would’ve been about seven or eight when this came on. I can’t imagine I didn’t watch it enthusiastically on television
In my opinion, Ernie Anderson said it all, "Tonight, the most exciting movie ever made" and "The biggest adventure-EVER." In my opinion, I couldn't have said it better myself!"
i saw this premiere, it was awesome, it was the 2nd time I saw this film, first time was in 1975 when I waas five years old, i've been terrified of deep water ever since. :)
Could be. I certainly never saw them used again. Funny that you mention DiscoVision. I bought that first MagnaVision player, and "Jaws" was the first disc I owned! Still have 'em both.
Tonight! An ABC Sunday Night Movie Special! Tonight! The most exciting movie ever made, comes to Television! The movie that made motion picture history! Tonight... ...Get ready for "JAWS"! Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, In the biggest adventure ever! First time on Television! And now... ...Get ready... ...For "JAWS"!

Ernie Anderson should have also added this: Although edited for television, tonight's thriller contains scenes of suspense and violence which may be unsuitable for young viewers. Parental discretion is advised. Same thing for Jaws 2 with the bloody scenes from all the shark bites!
in reality Ernie Anderson could be a PAIN IN THE ASS to work with. outtakes prove this (probably on here) look for them. Also this reminded me that there is a paperback book i should have saved, this was a special time (they still do things like this-movies are still edited-but it isnt the same) you should keep this, you can have your VHS TAPES transferreed to DVD, i happen to have a vcr/dvd combo that does just that and when you put to dvd, the tracking can be anywhere from 95% to 99% perfect
@jaybee1973jaybee Yes, the CBS Kennedy special aired opposite "Jaws". Meanwhile NBC was showing Part 2 of the made-for-TV biopic "MacArthur" (starring Gregory Peck as the general). ABC trounced the competition handily, as it turned out. In other broadcasting trivia, NPR's "Morning Edition" show premiered the following day.
Doesn't it seem wrong that jaws is rarely shown on network television anymore besides DVD and blue ray versions and of course Netflixs which not everyone can afford how is this motion picture masterpiece going to be handed down to a new generation
In the fall of 1979, after eight years on CBS (including daytime repeats), "ALL IN THE FAMILY" [:02] went into syndication on local stations (including KOVR)- the "flagship" was New York's WNEW-TV {WNYW today}, who originally scheduled it weeknights at 7:30pm(nyt). This was obviously a "special" opening for the "SUNDAY NIGHT MOVIE", as Joel Crager usually "billboarded" the evening's feature presentation.
Many of us probably didn't realize at the time how much of the widescreen image we were missing on our basically square, 1979 television screens. It was probably a terrible pan-and-scan version but nobody cared. This was "JAWS" on television!
There has been a rating system since 1968. Jaws was a PG with a strong disclaimer. It just seems that today discretion disclaimers are given out to just about anything.
@AngelofAnguish Totally, it's kind of a shame that they don't have announcers on TV like this anymore. Everyone's too happy, they don't get you into the mood for suspense and danger.
There are other movies that are pretty scary, but for me, this is the granddaddy of all of the most terrifying movies in my opinion. I remember this as a kid also, the intro. Absolutely freaked me out.
When Spielberg released Jaws to DVD for 25th anniversay, he redid the sound fx. Brody's revolver, Quint's harpoon and rifle, and especially the scuba tank explosion. I prefer the original sound fx.
Hell, I remember seeing this on television the night it premiered. I was glad I got to see it over the summer when it was released because ABC gutted it. The ad makes me want to watch my DVD of it again soon. Anyone notice that Jaws premiered without a parental discretion advised disclaimer?
I miss the days when films were actually good. I loved how movies, particularly blockbusters, were promoted as a major event back then when making their network TV debut. Cable and home video were in their embryonic stages and re-releases were rare and we didn't have the rental/streaming conveniences of today! ABC also ran a great promo around the time showcasing their upcoming movie lineup which, besides Jaws, also had The Spy Who Loved Me and some others I don't recall.
@fourstringpredator Mine, too! Out of ALL the movies that've been released since movies EVER became a business, Jaws is my ALL time favorite! Here's some BAD news for us Jaws fans: Latest rumour in the movie business is that Jaws is being considered for a (get ready for this) a RE-MAKE! YES, A RE-MAKE! Not only a re-make, but a re-make in 3D! Again, this is ONLY A RUMOUR!
Well here you are 12 years later!!! Lol JAWS is in theaters in 3D and Imax as we speak for I Believe 2 more weeks. Your were right! Universal released this on September 2nd 2022 Lol. ✌🏽
@kamelion7 Very well put. And I'll only add that most of today's crap is catered toward teenagers. If Jaws was remade today, the shark expert would be 25 years old, the cop would be a rookie, and the fisherman would be an amateur also in his 20s.
In 1979 I was 13. "Jaws" was re released in movie theatres for the summer, moved quickly to HBO in early fall then ended up on broadcast television all in a matter of weeks. Imagine seeing a great movie today then having to wait another 4 years to see it again at the movies, let alone cable!! Today, a piece of crap like "Titanic" gets on to cable within a year!
Thanks for this! Great clip/promo. In future, select 'deinterlace' on video clips from television. This will avoid the horizontal bar effect on movement. Cheers.
I've seen "Slugs: The Movie" on here along with tv shows, music videos, and other movies. One time, I saw "Jurassic Park" on here, though that video is probably gone by now since I haven't seen it since. So why can CZcams play some movies, but not other movies, as I've already asked in my previous post?
Does anyone have the actual movie downloaded on CZcams? All I've seen so far are trailers and a couple of short scenes at best. Where's the Part 1, Part 2, etc.?
I disagree with you: High School Musical 2. Sure, it's a cable movie debut, but it was watched by a majority of kids in a specific age group. This will be what they will be reminiscing about in 15 years.
Yes, but my point is that CZcams does play some movies in their entirety. So why some, but not others? Besides, why spend $20, $30 on a DVD when you can watch it for free online at CZcams?
Who doesn't remember this very famous intro from 1979?! This was fabulous.
I bet everyone in America watched the premiere.
Edit for this tv edition is MASTERPIECE ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This really takes me back to my childhood. I remember if a good movie like JAWS was coming on, it would come on at 8 pm and bed time for me and my brother was 9 pm, but my parents would make an exception and let us stay up an hour past bed time to finish watching the movie. Those were the days!
The great Ernie Anderson could make any movie sound great!!..(get ready for JAWS)...Ha!! Love that guy!..
This promo just reduced me to being the five year old who sneaked into the living room to watch this forbidden movie while my parents were entertaining friends. It terrified me and I didn't sleep all night. Good times.
me too! :) I was 7
Get ready..........for Jaws.
Incredible, this was when a movie premiere was a DATE.
I agree with tubber, Ernie's voice strikes nostalgia with everyone age 40 and up.
Ernie Anderson had a great voice.
my dad taped this movie that night he had purchased a 4 hrs vcr the year before when they first came out I think he told me it was about $1000 dollars. This is how I first saw jaws I was 9 years old that shark scared me to death the movie just turned 40 years old last week.

YES!
Ernie Anderson could make anything sound epic just by saying, "Tonight!".
I remember this night very well.. It was broadcast after a Mork & Mindy episode. Had to ask my parents if I could stay up to watch this. Although it was edited, there were some additional scenes (outtakes) added. Too bad Universal, did not include this version as a Blu Ray extra. Great times!!

The classics never dies.
Ernie Anderson could have introduced school board meetings on public access cable and made them sound like exciting, must-watch TV.
Ernie made everything feel like a special event. When you heard his voice you knew you wanted to watch
back when there was not 1000 channels and still nothing on. When a movie debut was on tv it was an event.
What I like about it is that everybody who watched the movie had something to talk about the next day. People at work can have a watercooler chat. The kids at school can talk about it on the bus.
Are you kidding??? Ernie Anderson was one of the great announcers.

I've been regularly checking CZcams for over a year for this bumper. Love this post, Erik! I recorded JAWS off of the television speaker this same night, too! I still have it somewhere!
This was my introduction into horror as a 5 year old kid. I remember this night well. I watched with my parents.
i was only a year old when this aired
Still, after 45 years, one of the best thrillers made.
i saw jaws in the theaters was i was very young and i remember watching this on that sunday night when i was 11. the ads they created for weeks leading up to the TV debut and the ads they played during the movie were amazingly tense. growing up near martha's vineyard, jaws will always strike a strong, nostalgiac chord in my heart.

JAWS is a great flick that still holds up today! I live in Massachuetts and go to Edgartown Martha's Vineyard every summer.
We're gonna need a bigger TV.
I remember seeing this at the Drive-in .
Thank you! Been waiting EONS for someone to post this!
My parents must’ve been deranged, or more likely, knew that I was deranged, so they took me to see Jaws when I was about four. I would’ve been about seven or eight when this came on. I can’t imagine I didn’t watch it enthusiastically on television

I totally remember recording this 30 years ago, especially that intro with ABC ("The Loooove Boat") promo voice guy.
all in the family tomorrow at 5:00 ok got it I won't forget
i was only 16 months old when this aired i can't remember if i was awake or in my crib sound asleep
Awesome 😊
Crazy that back then it took 4 years to be shown on regular tv. We can see a movie at home the same time its in the theater now .
GREAT job Ernie!!!
i saw this premiere, it was awesome, it was the 2nd time I saw this film, first time was in 1975 when I waas five years old, i've been terrified of deep water ever since. :)
beauty personified.
awesome...this promo makes me want to sit down and watch that great movie again
I remember the night this was on !
Don't miss "All In The Family" tomorrow at Five!
Voiced by the legendary Ernie Anderson.
Could be. I certainly never saw them used again. Funny that you mention DiscoVision. I bought that first MagnaVision player, and "Jaws" was the first disc I owned! Still have 'em both.
Great memories.
Now this... this is a movie promo.
A classic in so many ways.
AND a time when the network knew how to sell a movie.

I vividly remember watching this with my parents the night it premiered. They didn't warn me about the Ben Gardner jump scare.😠
Wish they would release this version on Blu Ray. It was an extended version, as ABC would often do with their initial premiere broadcast.
i miss the old movie theaters. i went to a used record stoe and found the 45 rpm release of the theme to this
Also, INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS back in 1978 was great !
Jaws is still my favorite movie, I hope it is released on blu-ray soon!

Oh yeah! It has graphic violence for a PG movie and it was originally an R Rated movie!
That is just classic!

@dunnydundutta I know, he had such a great voice. They don't make em' like that anymore.
Nothing beats the 70's and 80's for films, before all the CG crap. Now they don't even bother with a storyline!
Man JAWS waz scary as hell.
Hey up! If you walked in just as the man's leg hits the ocean floor you'd missed half the bloody film!

Very well put.
SHARKS DON,T DIE
Wow.
I'll watch this but I better not miss All in the Family!
Thanks for this! Great clip/promo. In future, select 'deinterlace' on video clips from television. This will avoid the horizontal bar effect on movement. Cheers.
cant find it here either..
I've seen "Slugs: The Movie" on here along with tv shows, music videos, and other movies. One time, I saw "Jurassic Park" on here, though that video is probably gone by now since I haven't seen it since. So why can CZcams play some movies, but not other movies, as I've already asked in my previous post?
if they had the nerve to remake PSYCHO, I wouldnt be surprised if they took a slap at JAWS.
I hope not. There are some films which are better as are. This is one of them.
Besides, why spend $20, $30 on a DVD when you can watch it for free online at CZcams?
lol, no. You should see this film. Just type in "Slugs: The Movie" or "Slugs horror film" or something like that. It should come up.
