Watching this on June 30th, 2019. The Penguins have just traded Phil. I am heartbroken, he did everything and more that the pens ever asked of him and he got shipped out for scraps. I can’t help but sympathize with Steve here.
There were 3 options on what do do with Phil: 1. Trade him for as much as you can right now 2. Risk injury or more decline in production and hope Babcock can re-raise his value 3. Keep him for the next 6 years. Phil was my favourite leaf for 5 years but even i know that it was time for him to go, best for both sides.
But his value has never been lower. He almost certainly would have had a rebound year and been more tradable when the cap increases a year from now. Plus he very rarely gets injured. He one of the most durable players in the league.
